Often, it's hard to understand what private public relations companies do to earn their retainers beyond setting up voice mail for event RSVPs and crisis management. But then, every once in a while, a firm does something clever that justifies its existence.

Harrison & Shriftman has organized a special screening of "The Devil Wears Prada." For assistants.

Invitations to the June 20 event at the Manhattan home of the Directors Guild of America went out this week, addressed to "Asst. to Graydon Carter," "Asst. to Brandon Holley," "Asst. to Ingrid Sischy," "Asst. to Charla Lawhon," "Asst. to Hal Rubenstein" and, no doubt, to the assistants of various other top editors in New York. (Anna Wintour's assistant, however, may not be among them. A spokesman for Vogue, the alleged backdrop of the novel on which the film is based, said no one at that magazine had received an invitation as of Wednesday afternoon.)

By putting the muscle magazines on the block, embattled American Media CEO David Pecker gained some breathing room, but several industry insiders think his time atop the tabloid empire may be nearing an end.

In the wake of American Media's announcement yesterday that five titles - including Muscle & Fitness, Flex, Muscle & Fitness Hers, Country Weekly and Spanish-laguage title Mira - the far-flung publishing giant he was trying to assemble now looks like it will proceed with downsized aspirations.

"It looks like a major-league collapse of the Pecker empire," said one industry executive. At the very least, the dream of a major expansion and eventually going public with an IPO appear to be over for the foreseeable future.

We are seeking an individual with expertise in Photoshop to assist the editorial graphics department with weekly photo production. Ideal candidate will have the ability to manipulate and collage images in Photoshop and search for photos quickly in online photo sources. Digital photography skills are a plus. Adobe Illustrator skills are also helpful, but the focus is on Photoshop and photography. Typographic design or traditional illustration skills are not needed. The internship begins mid-July and runs through the fall, but may be extended. Intern must be able to work 2-3 days a week, but schedule can be flexible.
