So what does the magazine's main man and notorious neat freak think of all this chaos? Turns out Wenner is nowhere to be found. This week, Wenner is said to be in Italy with his pal Bette Midler. Next week, sources say, it is on to Croatia with his partner Matt Nye. MORE ONLINE Bonnie Fuller is getting dissed left and right at American Media. The editorial director is one of the five highest-paid people at American Media - and as such her salary, bonuses and perks have to be disclosed in Securities and Exchange Commission filings. But that doesn't mean the powers that be have to keep her in the loop. On Tuesday, when CEO David Pecker sent out a company-wide memo telling senior executives and managers to log onto a mandatory conference call at 8:30 that night, Fuller went into a frenzy trying to find out what it was all about. One rumor was that the call concerned her protracted contract negotiations. MORE ONLINE

GOOGLing PORTFOLIO: Cond? Nast executives were likely reassured by Joanne Lipman's first public performance as editor in chief of the company's forthcoming business magazine, Cond? Nast Portfolio. On Thursday, Lipman conducted a lively interview with Google chief executive officer Eric Schmidt before a crowd of several dozen potential advertisers and journalists at the Four Seasons. (Not nearly as extravagant as it sounds. Lunch consisted of a single course - a breaded fish fillet - and a passed tray of petit fours.) Early in the program, Lipman read aloud a somewhat embarrassing quote from Schmidt she had found by Googling him. "This is the problem with search engines," he quipped. (Incidentally, the first link that pops up in a Google search of Lipman's name is a gossip item from Jossip.com.) Their conversation, which focused on Google's evolving advertising model, was filmed and uploaded on cnportfolio.com after the event. MORE ONLINE SEARCH AND RESCUE: As OK magazine closes in on the first anniversary of its U.S. arrival, a shake-up, of sorts, is afoot. Richard Desmond, owner of both the American edition and the U.K. version that spawned it, was in town Thursday to search for a new publisher for the U.S. title. Desmond called from the Four Seasons Hotel, where he was interviewing candidates, to confirm the search was in progress. Asked what that means for Melanie Danks, OK's current publisher, he declined to comment, but sources believe she is on the way out. MORE ONLINE LOSING HIS VOICE: Being editor of the Village Voice in the twilight era of alternative weeklies is bound to be a thankless task. Erik Wemple apparently figured that out, although not until after he'd accepted the job. The paper informed its employees late Thursday afternoon that Wemple had decided to remain at the Washington City Paper, where he's been editor since 2002, rather than assume the post he was named to amid much fanfare earlier this month. We drew from all quarters of the periodicals universe in compiling this year's selections. And what can we say about the choices? They're eclectic, accessible and they reflect the tastes of folks who spend a lot of their time immersed in the world of words and images. But magazines are changing a bunch. In the last 12 months, we saw the curtains drawn on Cargo and Organic Style, which made our cut in 2005. Yet some, like gracefully aging performers, remain on the stage: The Atlantic and Harper's. We still like them, as our list shows. But our selections are meant to be a conversation starter, so look them over, then tell us which magazines would be on your list. 50 BEST MAGAZINES 1. The Economist. In a class by itself as the best English-language newsweekly, with each issue unavoidably reminding readers of the weaknesses of Time, Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report. Published in Great Britain, The Economist's strength is international coverage, where it does not feel moved to cover a faraway land only at a time of unmitigated disaster. Even its coverage of the U.S. can be superior to the competition; witness a very solid special section recently on Chicago. And it doesn't let its reporting be undermined by its generally conservative editorial policies, as underscored by a recent look at the declining fortunes of Iraq war partners President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair with the cover headline "The Axis of Feeble." 2. Dwell. Lost in too many home magazines is an old-fashioned sense of fun and practicality. That explains why Dwell has found a niche, mixing the playful and affordable with strong design imbued with a younger-skewing feel. It's cool, modern and eco-friendly, reflecting a certain defiance of traditional norms (not looking down its noses at pre-fab homes) and adroit in its use of experts. MORE ONLINE

Invitations to a screening of The Devil Wears Prada are rumored to have gone out to the executive and editorial assistants of top magazine EIC's. The invites were addressed to "Asst. to Graydon Carter," "Asst. to Ingrid Sischy," so on and so forth. MORE ONLINE The stunt, which was pulled together by a PR team at Harrison & Shriftman's, was intended to douse the "finest high powered assistants in town," in Corzo tequila and cover them in Sephora make-up. Sounds fun. But, uh, you'd think that if they were making such a big deal out of this "you're an important person" crap, they would have at least addressed the invitations by name, instead of " to Brandon Holley's bitch."
