Are you a Plum – a pregnant woman 35 or older – or do you think Pink, by making your career a lifestyle?

If you’re a business-owning, cookie-baking fashionista who lives in a bungalow and likes to spend the weekend traveling with your dog or container-gardening with your kids, there’s at least one magazine that caters to you.

Or more likely, a dozen.

Memo Pad

ATOOSA'S ALTAR: Flattery will only get you so far in the magazine business. The real strivers have moved on to out-and-out idol worship — and it may be working.

Consider the case of Brianne Burrowes, a contestant on the MTV reality series "Miss Seventeen." The show featured 17 college-age girls vying for a grand prize consisting of a scholarship, an appearance on Seventeen's cover and, perhaps most important, a summer internship at the magazine. To say that Burrowes failed to win the competition is an understatement; in fact, she quit the contest three episodes in, tearfully declaring, "I'll just go ahead and get an internship on my own....I don't want to be affiliated with a house of liars."

Prophetic words, as Burrowes is now interning at Seventeen, where she'll soon be joined by the show's winner (and Burrowes' on-air rival), Jennifer Steele, who's been busy traveling the country giving speeches on behalf of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. (Steele's is a paid internship, while Burrowes is receiving academic credit.)

New York's queen lauds London as capital of cool
by Rob Sharp

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,1800324,00.html

Tina Brown, as a former editor of Vanity Fair, the New Yorker and Tatler, knows a thing or two about taste and style. Yet the British-born grande dame of American media, who has revealed she is set to become a US citizen this month after a 30-year love affair with Manhattan, believes the British social circuit has claimed New York's crown of cool.

Brown, a regular face at society parties on both sides of the Atlantic over the course of her career, has partly blamed George Bush's re-election in 2004 for the destruction of New York's 'mojo'. This, she believes, along with the destruction of the World Trade Centre, has allowed Britain's younger, more diverse glitterati to edge the US city's glamour pack aside.

Speaking to The Observer before her appearance at this weekend's Althorp Literary Festival, the editor and columnist claimed she had noticed at recent UK soirees that the British social scene was evolving. She counts as evidence the 'fabulous mix' at last week's auction hosted by Tatler editor Geordie Greig, also at Althorp, the Spencer family home in Northamptonshire, which was attended by Salman Rushdie, actor Orlando Bloom and the family of Mikhail Gorbachev.

Shock Fights For Shelf Life
By Keith J. Kelly

Shock magazine, which is being pulled by Borders and Rite Aid, is taking the unusual step of writing to its major retail and distribution partners, urging them not to buckle to what it sees as censorship campaign by a blogging photographer.

The mag that stokes to provoke - from eye gouging to fishing boats in rivers of blood - has irked ex-Green Beret photojournalist Michael Yon, who claims it illegally used his photo of a Marine officer cradling an Iraqi girl who had been fatally wounded in a suicide car bombing.

Yon accuses the publisher of using his photograph in an anti-military manner - a claim the publisher disputes, despite its use of the cover line, "War Is Still Hell."

Shelter Mags Losing Momentum
by Tony Case
June 19, 2006

With interest rates rising, the housing market cooling and home- design content flourishing in other media, shelter magazines may be on the bubble. After healthy growth in recent years, ad sales across the category have fallen flat, with some major players, including Hearst Magazines’ House Beautiful, Hachette Filipacchi Media’s Metropolitan Home and Time Inc.’s This Old House, experiencing double-digit declines in ad pages through June, per the Mediaweek Monitor. Circulation is also stagnant. Newsstand, which accounts for a small share of circ among these titles but remains an important measure of a magazine’s appeal, is in virtual freefall.

Through the early part of this decade—amid heady home sales and remodeling activity—double-digit growth for shelter books was common. There remain some bright spots, notably, newer niche titles like Dwell and Cond? Nast’s Domino and established players like Cond? Nast’s House & Garden and Meredith Corp.’s Country Home. But overall, business is off—along with the print outlay of the all-important home furnishings/supplies business, which declined 2.5 percent through May versus last year, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. While diversifying their ad base by reaping more business from auto, financial, food/beverage, even health/beauty, they remain heavily dependent on the core home category.

“The makers of windows and flooring, they’ve got to be in the shelter books. But with decorating products like bedding and window treatments, you could argue that [women’s lifestyle] magazines like [Time Inc.’s] Real Simple and [Hearst’s] O, the Oprah Magazine—hot new titles with shelter as part of their mix—have stolen some of those pages,” said Steve Lerch, print manager at Campbell Mithun. Lerch, and even some publishers, point to the “revamped, revived” Martha Stewart Living as also siphoning business from shelter books. Morevover, the field continues to grow. The latest entry is the MSL spinoff Blueprint, which launched last month. Home-design edit also has continued to proliferate across a range of media, from cable network HGTV to ABC’s Extreme Makeover to 150 home-focused special-interest publications from Meredith’s Better Homes and Gardens and to the fall launch of Key, The New York Times Real Estate Magazine.

CNN Stands By Its Man: Denies Anderson Cooper's Angelina Jolie Interview Was Bought

Rumor that Anderson Cooper's U.S. exclusive with Angelina Jolie (which already taped, and will air Tuesday) was bought and paid for by by Time Warner as part of People's $4 million payout for baby Shiloh photos isn't sitting well with CNN execs. False!, they declare. CNN spokeswoman Janine Iamunno shot us this missive shortly after our report:

Your item on this is completely wrong...in fact, nothing could be further from the truth!

Angelina Jolie's representative approached Anderson Cooper's senior executive producer David Doss because Angelina is an admirer of Anderson’s work, especially his commitment to covering Africa and the plight of refugees.
