******* Philip Merrill, the prominent publisher and former diplomat whose body was found floating in the Chesapeake Bay on Monday, apparently took his own life after struggling with a heart condition for more than a year, his family said last night. Merrill, 72, was found with a small anchor tied around one or both ankles and what investigators believe was a shotgun wound to the head, according to a source familiar with the investigation. The source said Merrill had bought a shotgun in recent weeks. Obviously, he took his own life," the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation remains open. "This is not an accident." The development was a startling turn in a tragedy that began June 10, when Merrill's boat, the Merrilly, was found under full sail but with no one aboard, drifting in a stiff breeze near Plum Point. A recreational boater found his body Monday near Poplar Island, more than 11 miles from where the Merrilly was discovered. Kelly 6/21/06 http://www.nypost.com/business/giving_the_business_business_keith_j__kelly.htm GRAYDON Carter, the Vanity Fair editor-in-chief, is planning to rev up business coverage at the monthly magazine. Oddly, it comes at a time when Cond? Nast is putting much of its resources into Cond? Nast Portfolio, headed by Editor-in-Chief Joanne Lipman. But that isn't hitting newsstands until April 2007. In the meantime, could there be an internal tug of war for business editorial talent brewing among the Cond? Nasties? Carter invented Vanity Fair's New Establishment list 12 years ago when many of the tech, info and entertainment figures on the list were in fact startling new faces of power and influence. Now the New Establishment is in many ways the establishment. "I want to bring it up to date, expand it and change," said Carter. Next year, the list will double in size to 100 names. MORE ONLINE 3. New York PostDeadline Diss By Keith J. Kelly 6/21/06 http://www.nypost.com/business/giving_the_business_business_keith_j__kelly.htm The bad news just keeps coming at American Media. (No, this doesn't mean that Bonnie Fuller has finally renewed her contract as editorial director). In the latest twist, the company now says it cannot meet the June 28 deadline for restating its earnings for the past year and a half, and its top mags - National Enquirer and the Star - are taking asset-impairment hits. All that accounting stuff is just so much more irksome and time-consuming than they thought. When the original deadline was first announced, the company seemed to feel it would have no trouble meeting it and would probably report early. Now CEO David Pecker and CFO Carlos Abaunza say they can't make the deadline, the work that needed to be done has proven too voluminous, and they are seeking extensions stretching from mid-August to September to cover nearly two years of reporting. MORE ONLINE 4. Wall Street JournalElle Rolls Out M.E. Edition By William Spain 6/20/06 http://publications.mediapost.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.showArticleHomePage&art_aid=44695 Fashion magazine Elle is launching its first Middle East edition this week, reports The Wall Street Journal. The issue set to hit newsstands in Lebanon, Jordan, and Morocco on Friday, is a mix of stylish clothing photos with advice for those who wear "loose-fitting abayas or chadors in public but want to look chic underneath and indoors." One spread photographed in Damascus features a model in a purple Etro dress with a violet head scarf. "We can mix the East and the West in fashion," says D?sir?e Sadek, publisher of Elle's Middle East edition, part of Hachette Filipacchi. "Young women have a globalized understanding of beauty," adds Abubaker Bagader, sociology professor at King Abdul Aziz University in Saudi Arabia. The Journal points out that "many also have both the money and the appetite to spend on fashion," although clothing customs vary widely from country to country. In some--like Lebanon--the featured clothes might be worn on the street, but in places like Iran and Saudi Arabia, they would be reserved for private gatherings of women, behind closed doors.
