******* Bonnie Fuller, the celebrity-magazine editor whose fate has been swinging in the wind along with the fortunes of her employer, American Media, has renewed her contract as editorial director for three years, she and company officials said. Ms. Fuller, who signed the new deal on Friday, is to receive the same $1.5 million annual base salary as in her current three-year contract, but she can earn more in bonuses over the next three years than she did in the previous three. Under her old contract, she earned an average bonus of $275,000 a year, based on the performance of Star, the tabloid turned glossy magazine that she oversees, bringing her average annual pay to $1.775 million. This time, she is guaranteed an annual bonus of at least $500,000, based on the performance of Star, for a guaranteed minimum of $2 million. MORE ONLINE

COOP IS FLYING: The first major loss for newly installed Time managing editor Rick Stengel came on Thursday night, when Matt Cooper turned in his resignation to take a job as Washington editor of Cond? Nast Portfolio. (WWD.com first reported the news Friday morning; Cond? Nast Publications also owns WWD.) "They approached me a while ago about it," Cooper said Friday afternoon. "I've had a great time at Time and they've been particularly good to me during my legal troubles in the last year, but the chance to join a start-up was irresistible." Cooper was named political editor of time.com in April. Prior to that, he was a White House correspondent and deputy Washington bureau chief for Time, his home since 1999. MORE FOR MORRISON: So much for the speculation that Cathy Horyn might leave The New York Times to replace Michael Roberts at The New Yorker. Susan Morrison, who was already editing the title's two annual style issues, has been appointed fashion editor, succeeding Roberts, who left in April to join Vanity Fair. Morrison, a veteran of Vogue, Spy and the New York Observer, will continue to serve as articles editor while overseeing the magazine's fashion and design coverage — such as this week's story on Cristobal Balenciaga, by Judith Thurman. THE search for Glamour magazine's West Coast editor is finally over. Conde Nast's most profitable title had been without an L.A. boss since Rachel Zalas' contract was not renewed two months ago. But after interviewing dozens of candidates, editrix-in-chief Cindi Leive has settled on Teen Vogue's Blaine Zuckerman. "Blaine is smart and energetic and has a lot of personality. I thought he did a great job at Teen Vogue, and [editor] Amy [Astley] was very supportive of this move," Leive said. MORE ONLINE

BRITNEY Spears was shocked - shocked! - by the reaction to her wretched NBC interview with Matt Lauer (87 percent of people polled in Us Weekly had less respect for Spears after the chat). So she attempted damage control. Spears had a photographer take pretty pictures of her - this time with professional hair, makeup and wardrobe. And despite tearfully begging for privacy, saying she hates media attention, and calling the celebrity weeklies "trash" in the interview, Spears then tried to sell the photos and an "exclusive" interview to those same trashy weeklies for $200,000. There were no takers. OK! finally bought the shots and the interview for a measly $5,000. A rep for the magazine declined comment but did say, "Who doesn't love a discount?" Spears' rep didn't return calls. Meanwhile, Spears' hubby, Kevin Federline, seems to be on a budget. Federline was shopping at Lounge in SoHo on Friday but balked at paying $150 for a T-shirt. Movie musclemen Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone quivered and caved after getting calls from a supermarket tabloid, a private investigator claims. A National Enquirer reporter boasted that she got a one-on-one interview with Schwarzenegger, now the governor of California, after editors threatened to run a story on rumors that he slept with Brigitte Nielsen. The two co-starred in the 1985 leather-kilt epic "Red Sonja," and Nielsen married Stallone five months after the film's release. Turns out the reporter herself was being recorded by a writer at The Globe, Jim Mitteager. "That's how I got Schwarzenegger," The Enquirer scribe crows on tape. MORE ONLINE

When you want to understand the state of American business media, it pays to go to people who have seen it all. That's why I sought an interview with two stellar veteran columnists, Newsweek's Allan Sloan and Joe Nocera of the New York Times. This is a crucial period in the annals of business journalism, which has periodically been a fairly predictable (though some might substitute the word "sleepy") segment of the publishing industry. BusinessWeek, Fortune and Fast Company, to name three well known titles, all have relatively new top editors. And the excitement in the industry is bound to build soon, too. Consider that even though the outside world knows very little about Conde Nast Portfolio, which will hit newsstands next May, this business magazine has been given a massive build-up by the curious but ultimately clueless media (yes, me included). When you run an independent federal agency, you generally want to avoid the appearance of being in bed with lobbyists or big business. So why is Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin J. Martin standing on an unmade bed in a hotel room in a glossy magazine photograph that also features an influential lobbyist and a communications executive? Details magazine, which ran the picture in its June/July issue as part of a photo essay on people influential in the media world, showed the usually buttoned-up communications lawyer sans jacket and tie, his shirt open at the neck and his sleeves rolled up. 8. Mediaweek
As the magazine industry continues to develop more efficient methods of audience measurement, publishers and media buyers last week reacted favorably to the beta-test results of Readership.com, an online audience measurement service created by McPheters & Company to further the industry goal of improving magazine metrics. The subscription service, launching this fall, will provide the publishing industry with detailed data on readership levels, audience accumulation, demographics and engagement for 200 magazines and newspapers on an issue-by-issue basis, and in a timelier fashion than the semiannual estimates provided by Mediamark Research Inc. and the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Having audience numbers compiled continuously and updated weekly could completely change the way advertising is bought and sold. Marketers can track how audience demos differ for specific magazine issues and newspapers and can determine where to place ads targeting specific demographics. Additionally, magazine editors can determine, for example, which celebrity cover subjects resonate with—or repel—their readers. MORE ONLINE
