But the August issue marks a milestone. Its subject: a curvaceous lass in immodest garb ... and Will Ferrell. Although the high-decibel comedian appears only on the back flap of a gatefold, it still represents the first time Stuff has put a dude on its cover, according to executive editor Dan Bova. (The girl, in case you're wondering, is Leslie Bibb, who costars with Ferrell in the NASCAR spoof "Talladega Nights." "What's awesome about the interview is he did it in character," said Bova. "We're calling it a DVD extra in magazine form." But who is steering the souped-up stock car that is Stuff? Former editor in chief Jimmy Jellinek was reassigned to sister title Maxim in May, following the departure of editor in chief Ed Needham. Bova is running Stuff for the time being, and is in contention for the top job, but sources said Maxim executive editor James Heidenry is also under consideration. Bova said he had been told the decision would come down shortly. "It's an exciting time here," he added. WATCH IT GO: Could People have a new stand-alone spin-off on its hands? The Time Inc. weekly's spring Style Watch issue sold more than 600,000 copies, according to publisher Paul Caine. That means the newsstand-only title, which has a cover price of $3.99, beat the single-copy sales average of such established fashion magazines as Vogue, Elle, Lucky, Marie Claire and Jane. People already added an extra issue of Style Watch to the schedule this fall, for a total of five in 2006, and Caine wouldn't rule out the possibility that its frequency could increase still further next year. "We're going to look at what happens in the fall and then make a decision on what happens in 2007," he said. "We're really taking a very conservative approach. We want to move with sure steps." MORE ONLINE 2. Yahoo News Harper Lee writes rare item for O magazine 6/26/06 http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060627/ap_en_ce/people_harper_lee_oprah;_ylt=AsfVnrvYB6wsN6uKD2oNRGxxFb8C;_ylu=X3oDMTA0cDJlYmhvBHNlYwM- MONROEVILLE, Ala. - Harper Lee, author of the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird," has written a rare published item — a letter for Oprah Winfrey's magazine on how she became a reader as a child in a rural, Depression-era Alabama town. The 80-year-old Pulitzer Prize winner quit giving interviews about 40 years ago and, other than a 1983 review of an Alabama history book, has published nothing of significance in some four decades. That makes her article for O, The Oprah Magazine, something of a literary coup for the television talk show celebrity. In a letter for the magazine's July "special summer reading issue," Lee tells of becoming a reader before first grade: She was read to by her older sisters and brother, a story a day by her mother, newspaper articles by her father. "Then, of course, it was Uncle Wiggly at bedtime." MORE ONLINE 3. Media Industry Online "NEWSWEEK'S" PASSAGE TO INDIA CAME NEARLY FOUR MONTHS BEFORE "TIME'S." http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm Since the end of the Cold War, it has been rare for either magazine to publish a cover story on a foreign country not hostile to the U.S. (in the 1930s/1940s/1950s, India founders Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru were written about frequently), so it is telling that Newsweek's The New India on March 6 was followed on June 26 by Time's India Inc. Latter is the "me-too," here, though to be fair, new Time managing editor Rick Stengel's debut issue will be better remembered for the lengthy excerpt from Ron Suskind's One Percent Doctrine (Simon & Schuster) that reveals that al-Qaeda terrorists aborted a 2003 cyanide attack on New York subways apparently because of their "disappointment" that the casualties would not be as great as the horror from September 11, 2001. (Stengel's first issue carried neither a masthead nor a letter to readers from him. Predecessor Jim Kelly's June 19 finale had both.) Far more relaxed was Newsweek's June 26 cover, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest star Johnny Depp. Los Angeles "shoot" occurred on Thursday, June 8, for what was to be the June 19 cover, but Depp heard the news that day that U.S. troops had killed Iraqi al-Qaeda leader Abu Mousab al-Zarqawi. As Newsweek editor (since November 1998) Mark Whitaker related in his June 26 letter to readers, Depp cut to the chase in asking director of photography Simon Barnett: So, are you going to put that dead guy on the cover?
