1. Take Cover: Magazines Peddle Fronts
Target Pays Big for Top Spot In Shop Etc. as Publications Blur the Editorial-Ad Line
By BRIAN STEINBERG
July 6, 2006; Page B2
http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB115213908627898846-rlkE4VsZr78HZLt0DnNuAFEAq_0_20060713.html?mod=blogs

A magazine's best advertisement has long been its cover, designed to make the publication leap off newsstands and entice readers to leaf through its pages. Now magazines are finding another use for this highly desirable real estate: selling it to advertisers.

This week, Hearst's Shop Etc. magazine is sending out its August issue to half a million subscribers with a cover paid for by retailer Target. Complete with Shop Etc.'s masthead in its regular top-of-the-page spot, the cover is dominated by a picture of designer gift wrap. The word "advertisement" appears in small print above the masthead.

Dubbed a "cover wrap" by Hearst, because the ad extends across the front and back of the magazine, sale of such premium space is the latest sign that magazines -- facing increasing competition for ad dollars from other media -- are becoming more flexible about the types of ads they will accept.

Selling a cover to an advertiser long has been common among some industry "trade" magazines. Until now, it has been a rarity for mass-circulation consumer magazines, which are typically more concerned about blurring the line between editorial content and advertising.

Shop Etc. sees the Target cover as a way to help advertisers' messages stand out. "There are too many ads out there, and it's a sea of sameness. You have to be creative," says Cynthia Lewis, Shop Etc.'s vice president and publisher. "I don't think any one of our subscribers will feel that they have been misled by this cover." Copies of the issue on newsstands won't include the cover wrap. The magazine's third page functions as the regular cover.

To get the prominent placement, Target paid a premium and bought a full-page ad at the end of the magazine, says a Hearst spokeswoman. Hearst declined to comment on the price of the cover wrap. A Target spokeswoman said executives weren't available to comment.

Shop Etc. may have gone further than other publications, but some magazines aren't far behind. H. Bauer Publishing's In Touch Weekly helped design a back-cover ad for PepsiCo's Diet Pepsi that looked remarkably like the magazine's front. Instead of featuring a gossip-page regular such as Jennifer Aniston, the mock cover in the July 3 issue starred a Diet Pepsi can complete with cover lines ("The Diet Pepsi Can Spills All!").

'Seventeen' Gets Its Own MySpace Page
By Gavin O'Malley
June 29, 2006
http://adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=110263

Hearst Magazines' Seventeen is entering into an official promotional deal with MySpace, according to people involved in the partnership. While an increasing number of entertainment properties and brand marketers have latched on to MySpace and its massive community, Seventeen is one of the first print publication to do so.

Under the direction of editor Atoosa Rubenstein, Seventeen has aligned itself with MySpace over the past few months. The glossy's editorial staff was asked recently to create their own MySpace pages -- following in Ms. Rubenstein's footsteps -- and the magazine's contributor bios feature links to MySpace profiles.

Seventeen's MySpace page comes complete with quizzes and contests, a friends list with comments, plenty of links directly to the magazine's official Web site and banner advertising promoting magazine subscriptions.

Good Vibe For Mag As Buyer Signs On
By Keith J. Kelly
July 6, 2006
http://www.nypost.com/business/good_vibe_for_mag_as_buyer_signs_on_business_keith_j__kelly.htm

Vibe magazine, which has been on and off the block for years, was finally sold to a new investment team that is backed by Wicks Media. Quincy Jones, the founder and chairman, is now completely out of the company after a 15-year run.

The new ownership, the Vibe Media Group, is headed by CEO Eric Gertler and President Ari Horowitz, who also own BlackBook Media. They promptly installed Danyel Smith, a former editor-in-chief of the magazine - she left in 1999 - as the new top editor, replacing the bounced Mimi Valdez.

Four other editorial staffers and two business side executives, including President Kenard Gibbs, were let go just before the July 4 weekend in preparation for the takeover. Since 1995, the company has been part of Miller Publishing Group, which was run by CEO Robert Miller, a one-time top executive at Time Inc., with a minority interest held by Jones.

Memo Pad: And Baby Makes Six
By Sara James
July 6, 2006
http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/107471

Cookie editor in chief Pilar Guzman now has two reasons to scour the children's market looking for the best in baby accoutrements. She welcomed her second son, with Details publisher Chris Mitchell, on June 24. Willem Claudio Guzman Mitchell joins brother Henry and extended family uncle Gregg Mitchell and aunt Andrea Chu in the Brooklyn brownstone they all share. (Their living arrangement was featured in The New York Times' House & Home section in January.)

Chris said the new baby won't mean trading up for larger digs, though, at least not until his brother Gregg decides to have kids. "When Henry was born, we didn't all live together, so this is the first time [my brother and sister-in-law] have seen the first week," Chris said. "Seeing us dealing with a newborn, it's a lot less scary for them. My memory of Henry was, you're sure you're going to kill this thing in the first week. You can't believe the doctors let you take them home."

Henry, who clearly survived the amateur parenting, has been progressing with his swimming lessons at the Soho House pool this summer. "We were there almost every day this weekend," Chris said. "He's become known among the other parents. They say, 'That's Henry. He's the one who won't get out of the water.'" (Cookie and Details are, like WWD, owned by Cond? Nast Publications.)

Philips Teams With Magazine

Philips Electronics, which made headlines last fall for its onetime sole sponsorship of a 60 Minutes episode, will execute another exclusive sponsorship next month, this time teaming up with Gourmet magazine.

The consumer electronics company will be the only advertiser in a 102-page supplement that will be polybagged with the August issue of Gourmet. The section will feature stories by well-known authors such as Calvin Trilling, Jane Smiley and Pat Conroy about their relationships with food.

The digest-size supplement will provide a less cluttered ad environment and a "simpler" reading experience, the companies said. The compact size is designed for easy beach reading and was developed as an extension to Philips' "Sense & Simplicity" branding campaign.
