******* A secondary round of axings at Vibe yesterday added another 21 heads to the original bloodbath. The new layoffs added award-winning Design Director Florian Bachleda and Managing Editor Lori Yacavone to last week's purge which included the editor-in-chief, Mimi Valdez, and the president, Kenard Gibbs. The ousted hierarchy from last week included Executive Editor Shani Saxon-Parrish, Deputy Editor Jamie Katz and Music Editor Eric Parker. MORE ONLINE 2.Fish Bowl NYMagazines at the break: So Not Jane By Dylan 7/12/06 http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/magazines/magazines_at_the_break_so_not_jane_39939.asp The first half advertising numbers for consumer magazines are in, and according to the Publishers Information Bureau — the Magazine Publishers of America arm that tracks this sort of stuff — overall revenue is up about 1% but ad pages — typically the better gauge of the industry's health — are off 1.7 percent. More interesting to us, though, are the performances of selected individual titles, and what it means for their editors: ElleGirl performed until the bitter end, up nearly 20% in ad pages and 50% in revenue to $19.1 million. Brandon Holley-led Jane is down 41% in ad pages — some 150 fewer — and 36.6% in revenue to $15.2 million (about $9 million less). So not Jane. Martha Stewart's post-penitentiary ass-kicking continues, as Living is up 75% in ad pages (586 vs. 336 last year) and 92% in revenue to $74 million — roughly $35 million more than it pulled in over the same period last year. MORE ONLINE 3.Min OnlineEllen Levine's Incredible Near-Quarter-Century as Editor In Chief By Steve Cohn 7/12/06 http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm Time will tell the impact Levine will have on her new position as Hearst Magazines editorial director that starts Monday (July 17), but it will be hard for her or anyone to match her achievements of the past 24 years. From serving on the Meese Commission in 1986 (where she dissented from the majority's conclusion that Playboy was pornographic) and countless philanthropic activities to being president of the American Society of Maga¬zine Editors (now an asme Hall-of-Famer), winning Matrix and National Magazine Awards and "recruiting" Oprah Winfrey to successfully launch O in 2000, Levine's r?sum? is distinguished even without her "fulltime jobs." They distinguish her even more. In 1982, Levine was Cosmopolitan senior editor and potential successor to Helen Gurley Brown when she was recruited by Peter Diamandis at then-CBS Magazines (now Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S.) to succeed Geraldine Rhoades at Woman's Day. Nine years later, it was Hearst Magazines president Claeys Bahrenburg who brought Levine back to the company to edit Redbook, succeeding Annette Capone, and he moved her to Good Housekeeping in October 1994 follow¬ing the retirement of John Mack Carter (he remains a Hearst consultant). Today, Levine and Cosmo publishing director (since August 1995) Donna Lagani are the only two major HM executives to predate since-November 1995 president Cathie Black--whom Levine will be working directly for.
