FOX IN THE HENHOUSE (2nd item)
By Keith J. Kelly

Sheryl Berk, the former editor-in-chief of Life & Style - who was a collaborator with Britney Spears on a quickie autobiography in 2000 - is now shopping a novel, "Almost A-List." "It's set in Hollywood loosely based on my life as a celebrity wrangler," said Berk.

Celebrity wranglers, unheard of a few years ago, have now become vital cogs in the Hollywood publicity machine that many magazines live on. The wranglers' job is basically to beg, plead or cajole Hollywood stars and their powerful publicists to sit for photo shoots and interviews that help sell newsstand copies.

"It's a look into the glamorous and sometimes cutthroat world of celebrity wrangling," said agent Frank Weimann at The Literary Group, who sent a completed manuscript out to eight publishers earlier this week. In her own life, Berk recalls breaking a dinner date with her boyfriend because she was on a movie set with Mel Gibson, who was busy filming "Ransom." "He didn't believe me at first," she said.

Memo Pad: Jane Charade
By Sara James

JANE CHARADE: Jane fashion director Kusum Lynn came face-to-face with her imposter on Wednesday night. And it turns out not only is she a he, but the guy has a long history of impersonating Cond? Nast employees.

For months, publicists in the fashion, music and film industries have been contacting Lynn to let her know that someone was using her name and credentials in an attempt to get into events. In May, Gawker.com posted an e-mail from one of Lynn's fellow Jane editors, warning people about the deception, though that doesn't seem to have served as much of a deterrent.

"I have received many e-mails about requests for tickets to concerts at Madison Square Garden and to movie premieres," Lynn said. "The most random was a Bronx Zoo event. Talk about free time."

Playboy Editor Submits To Brazilian Bikini Wax For His Column

Talk about "method" reporting. In the August issue of Playboy, editor Rocky Rakovic provides perhaps the best lead of any column you'll read this year: I'm lying on my back, and an attractive middle-aged woman is about to smear hot wax on my balls.

Rakovic also reveals what in any other office would violate roughly 47 sexual harassment guidelines in the employee manual: "If you're such a fan of bald balls, why don't you get yours waxed?" said my boss with a sadistic smile. "I may even let you write about it."

Interns assist the staff with research, phone calls and filing, work with the features editors and their assistants on the planning stages of stories, and are often asked to do reporting for travel polls and other special projects at the magazine. Those who shine at the simpler tasks often have the opportunity to work on bigger projects, and write an occasional short piece. Editorial interns should have at least three years of undergraduate work, prior office experience and a strong interest in magazine publishing/editing. All applicants should be familiar with Mac OS X, have good phone and research skills, and be available at least 2 days a week. Knowledge of foreign languages, and travel experience are beneficial.
