Copyright C AdMistress 2006 ============ If you have worked online for any length of time you probably have some web pages you don't use anymore, or you might have moved or changed the names of your pages. These pages could be listed in search engines, other websites, directories, articles.... Even if there are no broken links in your website a visitor may misspell a URL. What happens in these situations? Visitors get a standard error message such as "page not found Error 404" - not very informative OR very attractive! Most people will not make an effort to look for a missing page. If they find an error, they'll most likely click on their back button and never return. But you don't have to lose those visitors. By simply customizing your 404 error page you can keep those people on your site! You can design your custom error page using the same editor you normally use to create your regular web pages. Your error page must inform the reader that something is wrong, and should also include links to important parts of your site, such as the main page or site map. You can also include a brief paragraph about your website, a search box and an email link to the webmaster. There are other error conditions that also occur. These are some of the more common errors: 400 Bad Request 401 Authorization Required 403 Forbidden 404 File Not Found 405 Method Not Allowed 500 Internal Server Error 501 Method Not Implemented 502 Bad Gateway 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable It's a good idea to create individual error pages for each of these errors and to customise the message depending on the error code. Error codes can be confusing to some visitors so go out of your way to be helpful. For example: Error 401 Authorization Required - the user is not authorised to access the page, or has entered an incorrect username or password so indicate that the user authentication has failed, invite the user to try logging in again, provide information about who to contact to check authentication and provide a link to a page where passwords can be reset. Error 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable - the server is temporarily too busy or the page has been taken offline so indicate that the page is unavailable due to maintenance or overloading, inform when the page will be available and if appropriate, provide a way for the user to report this to the systems administrator. Check with your web host before you create custom error pages as certain hosting configurations don't allow you to create custom error pages. Taking the time to create your own custom error pages is definitely worth it - don't lose those visitors you've worked so hard to get! ===================================== Clue # 273 - Custom error pages will keep your visitors on your site.
