ISSN 1545-5599 BOOK PROMOTION NEWSLETTER Issue 58: May 11, 2005 EDITOR: FRANCINE SILVERMAN http://www.bookpromotionnewsletter.com http://www.nystatetravel.com ======================================================== FREE audio of recent telephone seminar on ... WHAT RICH AUTHORS KNOW THAT POOR AUTHORS DON'T Want to make a whole lot more from your non-fiction book-- maybe even enough to go full-time? After working with 9,300+ authors over the last 18 years, I've learned that rich authors simply do seven key things differently than poor authors. Get the audio of my recent telephone seminar and learn the rich authors' strategies. Get audio at http://www.freeauthortips.com/call296 ======================================================= INTRODUCTION The situation is getting drastic ??“ 235 bounced issues in the last mailing. Of those 209 were AOL. I had to resort to sending the newsletter in an attachment to paid subscribers ??“ those never bounce, it seems. This is a threat to my newsletter and the responsibility of AOL users to figure out the cause. Ginny Stibolt had recommended that AOL users who do not receive the newsletters every two weeks add "@optonline.net" to their white list. Lisa Lenard-Cook says she puts in my entire address, franalive@optonline.net, in her spam-blocker, which keeps out other ???optonline.net??? emails. ???I have my spam-blocker set on high and I? agree with Ginny, but I didn't add the server, just your address, which is where the email originates.??? Interestingly, when I sent out the release on my book reviews, only 10 bounced and none were AOL. So I have to assume it??™s the length of the e-mail that??™s the problem. Unfortunately, it??™s impossible to keep this ezine short. ==================================================================== 50% Special Offer -- Book Promotion Newsletter subscribers only! I chose excerpts that not only praise the book??™s content and/or style, but also give a new reader an idea of what the book is about, so I don??™t have to include much additional copy to explain the book. On the reverse side of the card, there is a small blurb in smaller type at the very top that gives the ISBN, publisher, and price of book, plus my author web address. I also included a small line that says: ???Writing Home has been featured in Metro Parent, The Detroit News, Strut Magazine, and The Daily Tribune??? ??¦ and so on. ???Most of the reverse side of the post card is left blank, allowing adequate space for me to add printed stickers announcing book signings or other one-time promotional events. Obviously, too, I leave blank space for address and postage for mailing. But please note that larger post cards require first-class postage stamp (37 cents). ???I also bring the blank cards with me whenever I speak, too, so that people who attend my talks can walk away with something that contains all the information they need about the book to order it online, or ask for it in bookstores. If they already have a copy of my book and like it, they can use the post card to mail to a friend who might be interested. The cards are great multi-taskers ??“ they are professionally printed and have worked very well for me. I sent out several prior to an upcoming book signing, and have gotten great results. I also use them to mail to out-of-town friends who wouldn??™t see the local promotion or local newspaper articles on the book." Cindy also suggests that authors reprint review comments on the first few pages of the second edition of their books. ???I see this done often in many books, and I always read those reviews myself before I buy a new book ??“ so they do help.??? http://www.laferle.com =============================================== Please consider adding www.AuthorsandExperts.com and www.SchoolBookings.com to your list of resources. These are great places for authors, experts, and speakers to connect with members of the media, those searching for speakers, and schools. Free to schools and media members and an economical resource for authors and experts. =============================================================== 2) GRIST FOR YOUR MILL Dorothy Thompson is ???putting together a book for first time authors and would like to know if anyone who is already a published author? would be interested in receiving my questionnaires to help aspiring authors learn that there's more to getting published than what they believe to be true.? Brian's Events and Venues Database (EVDB) is a search engine and personalized alert service designed to help people find out about upcoming events worldwide. All types of events are being added to the database: community, cultural, literary, entertainment, sports, business, government, academic, retail, and media. Although many publishers and bookstores list events on their websites, readers often don't know who publishes their favorite authors, or which bookstores are likely to host their events. With EVDB, fans can receive emails letting them know where and when their favorite authors will be reading, no matter who publishes their current or backlist books, providing for better attendance at bookstore events and more books sold. Funded by Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Omidyar Network, and prestigious individual investors from the Internet technology industry, EVDB doesn't charge anything to list your author events - the service is free to publishers, authors, and booksellers. Kathi is introducing Brian to people in the literary world, and helping him assess the viability of EVDB for publishers. She would like answers to the following questions: 1.? ? ? ? ? Are you currently publishing your events on your own website? 2.? ? ? ? ? How can EVDB help you to list your events, with as little pain or hassle as possible? 3.? ? ? ? ? Who in your company would be the best person to talk to about working with EVDB? Contact: inquires@evdb.com Kathi is producer of West Coast Live and author of AND MY SHOES KEEP WALKING BACK TO YOU (Chronicle Books 2002). ---------------------- Liana Metal recommends this new site: http://www.forthewriter.com as a good site to promote new books and submit articles. If you??™ve got stars in your eyes, this story will shake you up a bit. It??™s adapted from an article by subscriber John Dandola, an author, screenwriter and historian, in which he relates a tale of an author he read about in The Third Degree (the newsletter of the Mystery Writers of America). ???The lament was the same one I had heard for most of my professional career,??? says John, and ???bears repeating since so many talented authors seem so stunned when it occurs to them.??? The author??™s book was optioned by a Hollywood production company, and the author was paid a substantial sum of money. ???An adaptation was undertaken by a screenwriter. In doing so, that screenwriter went on to make composites of several of the book??™s characters; change the gender of several others; and the races of several more. He converted some of the book??™s locales and added new ones. Then he manufactured some additional subplots. The main thrust of the novel was by-and-large intact but with little of the novel??™s original nuance or tone. "The result was not satisfactory to the author but more importantly, it was not satisfactory to the producers. "A second screenwriter was brought in. He never opened the original novel but instead spun his re-write off of the first screenplay. He deleted scenes and added scenes; deleted locales and added locales; deleted subplots and added subplots. The result was even less satisfactory to the author but more importantly, it was even less satisfactory to the producers. "A third screenwriter was brought in. He, too, never opened the original novel but instead spun his re-write off of the second screenplay. He deleted scenes and added different scenes; deleted locales and added different locales; deleted subplots and added different subplots. Characters had by now shifted in motivation and importance and relationship to one another. Like the child??™s party game of ???Telephone,??™ the third draft of the screenplay was by now so far removed from the original novel that it bore little resemblance to it. The author hated it but more importantly, the producers couldn??™t sell a studio on it. "It remains unproduced. The author asked, quite reasonably, 'how could this have happened?'??? The article can be read in its entirety at http://www.JohnDandola.com/MovieAdaptations.chtml ? John??™s latest book is LIVING IN THE PAST, LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: The Biography of John Hays Hammond, Jr., (Quincannon Pub 2004), a prot?©g?© of Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. He is also author of THE GHOSTS OF HAMMOND CASTLE and four mystery novels. http://www.johndandola.com ? ? ***************************************************************** ? 6) KUDOS Lauretta B.
