1) PROMOTIONAL COUPS

This tip about promoting your website is from Shel Horowitz's  book, PRINCIPLED PROFIT - MARKETING THAT PUTS PEOPLE FIRST  (AWM Books 2003):

???It's no longer enough to simply say, 'visit my website.' All your publicity and marketing should not only list your web address, but also provide at least one specific reason to visit??¦I did a radio interview in Kansas City about my book on Frugal Fun. I always give reasons to visit the site, such as 'I mention a number of great cheap airfare sites in back issues of my Frugal Fun Tips. You'll find them on the archives page at www.frugalfun.com in the travel section.' A listener heard the interview, went to the site, ordered both the fun book and one of the marketing books, and then hired me for quite a bit of copywriting.???

Self-published authors sometimes CAN get their books into the mega-bookstores! Arlene Graham (Judy Wiedhopf) is author of TO WALK AMONG THE STONES (Whimrose Press 2002). In 2004, she ???heard about a local book group that met at a local chain bookstore: Barnes & Noble,??? she says. ???I went to one meeting, liked what I saw, and came back the next week and presented the facilitator with a copy of To Walk Among the Stones and my sales material. I offered to speak at one of the meetings about the writing process. She not only allowed me to, but I ended up being scheduled to speak at other bookstores as well: Borders, and my local community center: Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center. Because of this, my novel is on the shelf at my local bookstores.???

MARCHING THROUGH CULPEPER (Edgehill Books 2000) by Virginia Morton, now in its sixth printing, is a Civil War novel that weaves both historical and fictional characters. She shares a ???story that proves perseverance works???:

Several years ago, she sent a copy to Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, who had  spent his childhood summers in Culpeper visiting relatives. ???He would appreciate the history and the Christian characters in the book,??? Virginia figured. ???He sent me a thank-you note at the time and that was the end of it. However, I've been getting very positive feedback from Christian readers and I feel the book could be a crossover in the Christian fiction market. So I began praying and contemplating ways to reach that market as I felt I needed an endorsement.

???The answer that came back was: go to the filming of the '700 Club.' Since my husband had a judge's conference in Virginia Beach, this was certainly possible. And so I went and while waiting to go into the studio I bought one of Robertson's books. The receptionist suggested I get him to sign it after the show and she sat me up front where I could grab him before he left. And so I did, and, as he was signing my book, I introduced myself and told him I'd sent him a copy of MTC several years ago. He looked up and smiled and then told me he had read my book and how much he enjoyed it and praised my meticulous research. I was elated. Next I sent him a letter requesting a quote. It took five weeks, but I finally received this quote: 'I thoroughly enjoyed Marching Through Culpeper. This meticulously researched novel upholds Christian values and offers inspiring Christian characters - both real and fictional.'???  http://www.edgehillbooks.com
