CHAT WITH AUTHOR KARINA FABIAN

www.fabianspace.com

Like so many writers, Karina Fabian started out by telling tall tales and writing them as soon as someone showed her how to put the words together.  Since then, she's put words together for over 50 periodicals, and has four books to her credit.  In the process, she's finding her reputation moving from jack-of-all-trades to Catholic/Christian genre writer.

While she played with fiction through college, started her serious writing in nonfiction--news articles, personality features, parenting and pregnancy articles and some inspirational work.  She's been published in magazines like Fit Pregnancy, Wyoming, and Mothering.  She's had "regular gigs" in several local and Catholic diocese newspapers, and still does a monthly clergy feature for Montana Catholic.

Around 2000, Karina decided to try her hand again at fiction--mainly to quell the many characters who insisted on living out their lives inside her head.  She picked up the novel she'd written in college and discovered it was tripe.  Older and wiser, she realized no one has psychic powers suddenly manifest at puberty and ends up a cool dude.  Her character needs serious problems….  Soon The Miscria Trilogy was born and is being shopped to publishers.

In addition, she wrote short stories and joined writers groups, like the Catholic Writers Online, which she now owns.  There she met other writers and publishers and found new opportunities.  One led to her creating a series of craft books for the Catholic clubs Little Flowers and Blue Knights.   Writing and illustrating the Craft Companion series was a great way to have fun with her kids.

She and her husband Rob have also enjoyed writing together.  Seeking a home for their stories about Catholic nuns who specialize in space search and rescue led them to writing for and editing the Christian SF anthology, Leaps of Faith, and Infinite Space, Infinite God, both EPPIE finalists.

Infinite Space, Infinite God is an anthology of fifteen stories of Catholics meeting the challenges of the future:  time travel, transporters, genetic engineering, interstellar colonization, dystopias and more.  She and Rob call it "Faith-filled SF to make you think."  It is out in e-book and comes out in print in August by Twilight Times Press.

The publishing of Infinite Space, Infinite God has driven her into the world of marketing.  In the five months since Infinite Space, Infinite God came out in eBook, she has built her own websites, been on a virtual book tour featuring blogs and internet radio, and sent out scores of media releases.  She's scheduled for her first television interview for sometime in May.

As she learns the tricks of publicizing her book, she’s also tried to share her knowledge with others by teaching courses, offering “primers” on her website, answering questions and offering unsolicited advice.  She's a regular guest at the MuseOnline Writer's Conference, a free week-long workshop in October.

In addition, she’s shopping a fantasy trilogy, publishing a newsletter, writing a Catholic science fiction novel and crafting a fantasy noir satire involving a dragon detective, the creatures of Faerie and a Mensa convention.

She has several blogs, websites and a live chat:

She's President of the Catholic Writers' Guild, owner of Catholic Writers Online, and active in a half-dozen or more groups.  She homeschools her four children, and has the most understanding husband in the world.
