Welcome Notes

Welcome to this issue of the Burning the Midnight Oil Book Zine!
I'm thrilled to have you as a subscriber! Thank you for giving my E-zine the
chance of appearing in your inbox!

If ever you have any suggestions, please feel free to E-mail them to
me at BurningMidnightOil@hotmail.com .

There is also news I??™d like to share: Anyone who has their own E-zine or
newsletter is invited to reprint any of my articles used here, at absolutely
no charge! All I ask is that you please ask for permission first and include
my bio that follows each article.

In this issue, we get the second part of Craig Garber??™s fabulous article on
Web site mistakes.  Click on the link above the article to read part one
then come back to read the second part.  Believe me, it is well worth your
time to read the whole thing in one piece, because every single point he
makes can mean more money and business for you and less of a hassle for
prospective customers.

Every time I see my younger brother, he always says the same thing: ???I want
to write a book.???  Some may think that his inability to write a book may be
due to his failing to sit down and write it or that it??™s just wishful
thinking.  But the real reason comes in the next thing he tells me:  ???But I
never have the time.???  With a full-time job and four kids under 7, it??™s no
surprise that his daily schedule is chaotic.  But after asking about what he
normally does every day, I learned there are actually a couple of things he
can take out of there in order to find some time to write.  So, why hasn??™t
he done that?  Perhaps I am looking at this the wrong way.  Maybe my
brother??™s inability to ???see??? where he could find the time to write has more
to do with what he thinks about writing time and what that writing time
should be.

This reminded me of an article I wrote about common misconceptions
wannabe/aspiring writers have when it comes to not having time to write.
Perhaps they do have that time and it??™s just their attitudes/philosophies
that are keeping them from finding it.  Hopefully after you read this
article, you can catch on to these misconceptions, too, the next time they
try to keep you from finding the time to write.

Enjoy this issue!

Hugs,

Dawn Colclasure

EDITOR??™S ARTICLE

10 Misconceptions Keeping You From Having Time To Write

By: Dawn Colclasure ?© 2004

???I wish I had the time to write.???  You have probably heard people say these
exact words.  Chances are, you may have said them yourself a time or two.
In today??™s fast-paced, busy world, free time to do much of anything, let
alone write, can be harder and harder to find.

But guess what?  It??™s not really your hectic schedule keeping you from
finding time to write; it??™s one of those common misconceptions floating
around, keeping everybody from finding that precious time.

And what are these misconceptions?  What are these little demons convincing
people that they can??™t write today because of something or another?  Read
on.

???I must write at least 5 pages/one chapter/one story if I get a chance to
sit down and write.???

When we do get the time to write, we want to make it worth our while and get
that story/article/poem/essay/scene out of our head if we??™re going to sit
down and do any writing today.  But if you??™re crunched for time, this can be
some pretty hazardous thinking.  You don??™t need to crank out so many pages
or so many words every single day.  You just need to write SOMETHING.  Write
a few sentences, perhaps a few paragraphs.  It is better than letting a day
pass you by without you having written a single word.

???I must write something that would blow my reader away.???

We all want to write mind-blowing material.  We want a big name
publisher/editor/client/director to happen to see what we are writing and
greedily yank it from our hands, clutching his chest with each word he
reads.  And while there??™s nothing wrong with wanting to write a masterpiece,
there simply isn??™t room for that kind of thinking when you don??™t even have
the time to wash your hair.  Allow yourself to write whatever your heart
desires and save those ???I must write a masterpiece??? expectations for when
you??™re on a deadline.

???I must write at 3 p.m. every day ??“ or else!???

This type of thinking is usually common among those of us who live by our
day planners.  Everything must be planned, even the ???free time??? we normally
have at exactly 3 p.m. every day.  And while this may work out okay for a
while, it??™s this kind of approach that will spell trouble for your writing
time.  An earthquake might happen, a child might get hurt, you may be
running late or you??™ve got writer??™s block.  But if you can??™t write at 3
p.m., so what?  Let it go.  You might get the chance to write at 5 p.m. or
even 10:45 p.m.  You want to focus on finding ANY kind of free time to write
and you just can??™t schedule that free time.

???There is just NO time!???

Come on, sure there is.  You want to be a writer, don??™t you?  You do want to
write ... right?  If so, here??™s a tip:  Stay up late to write.  Or, if
you??™re the morning type, get up a little early in the morning to write.
Most writers find they can write at any time of the day, but if you??™re a
morning person or a night owl, then trust me on taking advantage of this to
find some time to write.  As you lie in bed at night, scribble on a pad of
paper.  Get up with the sun and breathe in the smell of brewing coffee as
you write at your computer.

???My job/life is too demanding as it is.???

Some people may be of the opinion that their jobs/kids/parents own their
life.  That these things/people have the right to dictate every single thing
they do, with absolutely no room for modification.  This is a big untruth!
If you are cooking a meal, take a notebook into the kitchen with you and jot
down a sentence here or there as you wait for the food to cook.  If you??™ve
got one meeting after another lined up all day, take a text messenger with
you and e-mail yourself any writing you manage to do in between them.

???Whatever free time I get is too important to me to spend writing.???

There??™s always something we like to do with our free time:  Watch TV, relax
with a cup of coffee, talk on the phone or chat online.  And while there??™s
nothing wrong with pampering yourself during those scant moments of free
time, you need to decide if you??™d rather spend that time doing something
that is important to you, too:  Writing.  I used to take naps whenever the
baby napped because that was my ???treat??? to myself, but after my time to
write suffered, I put on the coffee and sat down to write.  It was more
important to me than a nap and not only did I ???rejuvenate??? my desire to keep
writing but I ???rejuvenated??? my soul, too.  Writing allows you to get steam
off of your chest.  It helps you to allow your creative spirit to shine or
escape into a fantasy world.  It allows you to be at peace with yourself and
your thoughts.  It is a very nurturing experience and it can be just as
rewarding to you as a massage at the spa.

???There is absolutely NOTHING I can do to find the time to write.???

Take a few moments to look at your day-to-day schedule.  What ingredient can
you do without?  If you normally spend your mornings reading the newspaper,
write for a few minutes first.  If you chat online every day, cut that
chatting time in half.  You have the power to organize your day, no matter
how chaotic things may be.  You have control over whether you watch your
favorite TV program or tape it instead so that you can write.

???Everything I write must be finished in one sitting.???

This may work for writers like Ray Bradbury, Sidney Sheldown and Stephen
King, but come on! These are writers who have already raised their children.
They don??™t need to work, either.  (Although sometimes they elect to,
anyway.)  But if you??™re a writer, or a wannabe writer, struggling to find
that time to write, you must keep this rule in mind:  Not everything you
write can be done in one sitting.  Why?  Because even after you ???finish???
writing something, it??™s not really ???finished.???  After you walk away from it,
in your mind you??™ll be deleting words, rearranging paragraphs or adding
another point.  So there is absolutely no reason why you must ???finish???
something in one sitting.  What matters is that you START something in one
sitting.

???Writing is a waste of time.???

If you are someone convinced with this notion, then you can kiss all of your
writing time goodbye.  In fact, while you??™re at it, kiss calling yourself a
???writer??? goodbye, too.  Something considered to be a ???waste of time??? is
something which normally has little value to you.  And if writing has little
value to you, then that??™s a pretty big indication that you just don??™t want
to be a writer.  Maybe you??™d rather be a hair stylist or a fighter pilot
instead.  If you truly believe that writing is a waste of time, then you
don??™t have to fret over having no time to write.  But if having that time to
write is important to you, then that time to write is important.

???I have no time, no matter what!???

Some religions state that if you believe something to be true, your belief
will make it true.  If you truly believe that you have absolutely NO WAY AT
ALL to find time to write, that there is nothing that could possibly be done
to squeeze in your writing time, this will make it true.  And you will live
with this conviction.  More to the point, you will be trapped by it.  But if
you really want to be a writer, and if you really want to have some time to
write, you will find a way.  You must find a way.  Because you need that
time to write and your writing needs you.

GUEST ARTICLE
11 Common... But Incredibly Costly... Web
Site Marketing Mistakes:  How Many Of
Them Are You Making?  (Part 2)
Copyright ?© 2004 by Craig Garber

The following is part two of Craig??™s article. To read part one, go here:
http://archives.zinester.com/59308/20853.html

7. Market To Your Prospects In ... The Language THEY Speak ... And Can
Understand!

Sounds stupid but ... this simple rule is more overlooked, and about as
taken-for-granted ... as starting your car up in the morning is!

What do I mean by this?

Simple: Do you know what this spells? "C-o-l-o-u-r"

Well, if you are here in the good old U-S-of-A, it's "color" spelled wrong.

But if you live in jolly old England, it spells "colour," which is the same
as "color," over here in America.

The point is, make sure you're communicating to your prospects using words
they understand and concepts
they can relate to!

Otherwise, instead of "bonding" with them, you're telling them how
"unfamiliar" you are with taking care of their needs,

And they'll be reluctant to buying anything from you.

And while we're on the subject of communication, the rules are the same when
it comes to presenting the time, the date, and numbers in general.

For example, here in America, 12/03/2004 means December 3rd, 2004. But
again, across the pond in the UK, 12/03/2004 means the 12th of March, 2004.

You should also apply this rule when you are using industry, or cultural
"buzzwords" your prospect is using.

Here's what I mean: If you're selling supplements to the bodybuilding market
for example, you want to say things like "ripped" and "shredded" for muscle
cuts and striations, and "guns" or "cannons" when you are referring to the
size of your prospects biceps and shoulder muscles.

Doing all these things helps you bond with your prospects ... it shows them
you empathize with what they want ... and, it shows you are "one of them".

The old expression "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" ... has a lot of
merit here. So make sure you're taking this into consideration when you're
putting your web site up, and on all your other marketing, for that matter.

When you are speaking the same language as your prospects, it guarantees
you'll go much further in getting them to trust you ... so ...

They'll Wind Up Buying A Lot More ... Of What You're Selling!

8. Don't Do Too Many Different Things On Your Site At Once!

Consider setting up a separate web page for each service and product you
sell, especially if ... the products are unrelated. Then, use a simple but
well-crafted and enticing "back-end" offer for your other goods and
services.

After all, it's much easier to make that second sale anyway.

You see, when it comes down to it, your prospects just can't digest too much
at once.

They've got room for one item on their "attention span shelf" at any given
time. So ... accommodate them!
Because when you get too many things thrown at you all at once, you know
what happens ...
You Shut Down!

Think about this: Let's say you come home from a hard day at work. Your
significant other tells you the dishwasher broke.

And, O.K. ... let's face it: This isn't what you wanted to hear first thing
when you walk in the door, but in the big picture of life, it's really no
big deal, right?

Now picture this, instead: You come home from a hard day's work, after
sitting in rush-hour traffic for an extra 45-minutes longer than normal --
in the pouring rain.

You walk into your house and as you put your foot down on the doormat just
inside your front door, you feel a wet ... and soggy ... "squish".

It turns out, your air conditioner is broken and has flooded the first floor
of your house ... and ... your repairman won't be able to get out to your
place until tomorrow afternoon to fix it.

Oh yeah, and since it's the middle of the summer, you're looking at one
uncomfortable and sleepless night ahead of you.

Then, it also turns out your youngest child broke the antenna off your
neighbor's car while he was shooting hoops outside your house earlier this
afternoon, and your other child (a 16-year old girl) just got herself an
enormous brand-spanking-new "Skull" tattoo on her left arm.

And finally, your mother-in-law just got off the phone and she's decided to
"surprise" everyone ??“ she and her new husband will be dropping by this
weekend and staying with you for ...

The Next 10 Days!
Yikes!

Oh, and to top it off, your boss just rang you up on your cell phone ??“ he
needs to speak to you ??“ and it's urgent! But don't worry, he said all he
needs is ... a "quick" half-hour of your time!

Close your eyes and imagine, if this was you ... How would you be feeling
right now?

The fact is, at this point, anything else that could happen, almost really
wouldn't matter. Because by now ... you've gone into ...

Mental Overload!

You know, that state-of-mind where you're feeling so overwhelmed you just
"shut down"?

Well, unless you want your prospects to shut down because you're overloading
them, don't try to sell them everything "plus" the kitchen sink, all at
once.
Think this through for a minute: Isn't it much easier, for example, to have
someone give you $97 Dollars, five times over a 6-month period, than it is
to try and get them to give you $97 dollars, 5 times ... all in the same
day?

So be patient, and ultimately ... always be thinking about your prospect ...
their needs ... and their comfort zone, not your own.

And heaven forbid ??“ don??™t ever be pushy! Remember ??“ if you need cash, that's
your problem ... and as it relates to your customers (or anyone else in your
life for that matter) an excellent rule of thumb to remember, is this:

"Don't make your problems, their problems!"

In fact, that's such a great rule to remember for every aspect of your life,
you should grab a pen and a yellow pad, and write it down, immediately.

And to make sure you're never overloading your prospects or shutting them
down, just keep giving them what they want ... the way they want it.
NOT, what they need ... or even worse ...

What you feel they need!
That's irrelevant to your prospects unless they ask you specifically.

And by the way, as a side note, that's why ... when you write copy ... you
need to use short ... and sweet ... sentences and paragraphs.

It's how you best digest information ??“ one idea at a time broken down into
little bits and pieces.

Plus, by not forcing you to swallow gigantic pieces of information
all-at-once, it prevents you from becoming overloaded and shutting down.

9. Remember, two-thirds of your prospects are still plugging into the
internet by using a dial-up connection. Which means, the speed their web
pages load up and refresh themselves, is ...

Painfully Slow!

So don't put things like slow-loading graphics and displays ... or anything
else other than "words" and maybe a very-simple picture or two (of your
product in use), on your web site.

If you want your site to look pretty, there's plenty of ways to do this
using colors and a well-placed layout. And the truth is, you don't need your
site to look "pretty" to sell anything.

Just think, do vitamin catalogs look pretty? How about newspaper
editorial-style (or "advertorial") ads? They sure don't. But ... they are
straight and to-the-point, and they sell a ton of products.

The simple fact is, you're going to be light-years ahead of your
competition, by offering important information that's improving the lives of
your prospects, more than absolutely anything else you can think of. Because
...

That's What Your Prospects Want!

If you're the person who's consistently improving their lives ... as sure as
a Swiss watch keeps time accurately... you'll be incredibly successful.
And you don't need to be a graphic designer ... a Microsoft certified
programmer ... or Andy Warhol, to do that, do you?

Plus, you're familiar with the age-old rule, about how "Delay ... is ... the
death of a sale", aren't you?
Well, adding extra visual bells-and-whistles to your site may look good, but
think about it:

If it's only delaying the amount of time it takes for your prospects to pull
up your web site and read your sales message ... are these things really
helping your cause in the end?

No, not at all ??“ quite the opposite in fact ??“ they're delaying things and
costing you a slew of business.

Look: If a mother of three in Fort Madison, Iowa clicks on to your web page
... and while she's waiting for your graphic-intensive website to load up,
her daughter needs to go potty ... you're dead in the water. She's gone and
so is your sale.

But if you page just loaded straight up ... and she had a chance to at least
get a glimpse of your "killer" headline ... she'll be back as soon as her
little girl's done.

So like I said before, about how you must communicate your concepts simply
... you must also do the same thing when it comes to your web site's layout.

10. Update Your Web Site Content ... Regularly!

Imagine you wake up every day at exactly the same time. You brush your teeth
and you scrub your face in the sink, you eat the same exact breakfast ...
dress up in the same exact clothes ... and literally have the exact same
routines ... the same conversations... and the same life ... every single
day at work and at home.

There was actually a movie made in 1993, based on that, called "Groundhog
Day," starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.

The movie was hilarious, just like most of Bill Murray's work. And while
this may be funny to watch in the movie theater, if you're running your
Internet business like this ...

It's No Laughing Matter ... At All!

There isn't a person alive who will keep logging on to your website and
continue buying things from you ...

If You Don't Ever Change ... Or

Update ... The Content Of Your Web Site!

I've actually been on web sites that say something like "Our February 2001
Special Of The Month Is ..." But the problem is, it's not February 2001.
It's not even March 2001. In fact, it's not even 2001 at all!
Not only won't you sell anything if your content is old and stale, but your
reputation will slide down the toilet as fast as technology stocks slid down
the drain in 2000.

You must keep in mind the old adage, "Rome wasn't built in a day, but it
burned ... in less than a day."

Because ... It's True!

It takes you literally years of time ... hundreds of hours of work ... and
generally, a boatload of cash ... to become "known" for something. But it
takes just a few silly acts over the course of a week or two, to become a
"has-been"!

So don't make the mistake of becoming stale! Mark my words ...

Being "Boring" Is Your Most Expensive
Cardinal Sin When It Comes To Marketing!

Update the content of your web site regularly, with fresh ideas, and your
prospects will always be looking forward to logging on to your site ... and
eager to keep ...

Buying Things From You!

And one final tip you can use immediately is this ...

11. You shouldn't be spending one red cent more than you need to on ...

Registering Your Domain Name!

Remember a few years ago, when you were forced into paying $35 bucks a year
to register your domain names with register.com, because they were the only
game in town?

The thing is, if you only own one or two domain names, you really aren't
breaking the bank if you still want to use register.com for convenience
sakes.

But ... if you own 47 domain names, like I do ... you end up making an extra
mortgage payment every single year by doing this! And ...

Who Needs That?

So now I use godaddy.com. They charge you just $8.95 per-domain name,
per-year.

And there are a slew of other low-priced registrars out there too now. I'd
encourage you to do a Google search for them and check out what each of them
has to offer. You may find, there are better things out there for you, than
what you've got now.

Be careful though: Apparently, some of the lower-priced domain name
registration companies have restrictions of the domain name you register.
I've heard of situations where you must also use the company as your host ??“
meaning, if you want someone else to host your site, you can't.

This can be a big problem, so check things out before you do anything.
(GoDaddy does not have this restriction, by the way.)

Now, are any of these 11 rules hard-and-fast make-or-break do-or-die
situations?

Yes ... They Are!

However, what I'd really suggest is, you use these rules as "guidelines."
Not every single one of them may apply to you, but certainly, most of them
will.

If you deviate from one of these guidelines, it may not prevent your web
site from being a success.

But I'll tell you right now ...

Ignoring all of them is a slam-dunk guarantee you
will earn drastically less money than you can be making!
So ignore them only if you've already got enough money.

And listen, you can do what you want, but in today's day-and-age ... when
its getting more-and-more difficult just to be an entrepreneur, let alone to
make any money being an entrepreneur ... you must do absolutely everything
you can, so you're stacking the deck in your favor, to make your business an
astonishing success!

I wish you all the luck in the world, with all your marketing, both online
... and off!

WHAT'S UP WITH THE BOOK'S WRITERS?

Susan Sloate, who is interviewed in volume one, has some great news to share
about the novel she co-authored with Kevin Finn, FORWARD TO CAMELOT
(www.ForwardtoCamelot.com):

???It's been an interesting time -- in late May the book took finalist honors
at the 2004 IPPYS (Independent Publisher Book Awards). And just before July
4th, a Hollywood agent I know agreed to represent it for sale to film, while
just last week, a top New York publishing agent agreed to represent it for
re-sale to top New York publishers.???

Christine Hohlbaum, who is interviewed in volume one, has been making some
impressive great strides in the marketing and promotion of her book, DIARY
OF A MOTHER: Parenting Stories and Other Stuff
(http://www.diaryofamother.com/ ). In addition to appearing on National
Public Radio, she??™s had her book featured on the cover of Moms Business
Magazine, wrote an article titled ???Voices From Abroad??? for the Boston Globe
Magazine
(http://www.boston.com/news/globe/magazine/articles/2004/06/27/voices_from_abroad?pg=2)
and she continues to offer support and tips to parents at
EmpoweringMessages.com
(http://www.empoweringmessages.com/visitors/ChristineHohlbaum.shtml ). She
says in a recent E-mail: ???Dr.. Laura Schlesinger, a mom advocate with a
strong voice, will be running a few of my articles on her Web site later in
August. Be sure to look under stay-at-home moms. Here is the link for added
convenience???: http://www.drlaura.com/sah/sahm.html

And, as if all of that is not enough, she is once again offering a four-week
book promotion class, starting August 20th. I??™ve taken this class myself and
I believe it was an investment well worth the time! She says in her e-mail,
???If you, or anyone you know, wants to find out how you can boost sales
through a low-cost PR campaign, have them email me at
christine@diaryofamother.com . Here is the link to enroll in the $65 course:

WRITING PARENT TIPS FOR AUGUST

Tip:  Don??™t expect to get all of your writing done in one sitting.  Break up
your writing time. It takes practice to get used to writing in breaks, but
it is definitely possible to still be a great writer when your writing time
is done in breaks!

Tip:  Go easy on yourself.  If you??™re too crunched for time to write, give
yourself a little break and say ???It??™s okay.???  Just write whenever you can.

Tip:  If you absolutely cannot find the time to write, even after trying the
above suggestions, ask for help.  Really.  Sometimes, the people who are
around you who can watch your children or help out around the house really
don??™t know how much you need the time to write or that you need their help
to get that time to write.  If you can??™t find a way to get time to write,
ask for it.
