I'm thrilled to have you as a subscriber! Thank you for giving my E-zine the chance of appearing in your inbox! Forgive me if you are receiving this more than once. I've had too many goofs in trying to get this right. I am crossing my fingers that this one goes well. If ever you have any suggestions, please feel free to E-mail them to me at BurningMidnightOil@hotmail.com . There is also news I'd like to share: Anyone who has their own E-zine or newsletter is invited to reprint any of my articles used here, at absolutely no charge! All I ask is that you please ask for permission first and include my bio that follows each article. Also, I have some more great news! Peter Bowerman, author of The Well-Fed Writer, the award-winning ???standard??? on lucrative commercial freelancing (writing for business entities at hourly rates of $50-125+), just released his companion volume (95% new content), TWFW: Back For Seconds. Buyers who purchase either book through his site ( http://www.wellfedwriter.com ) get both FREE shipping and a FREE e-book bonus. In this issue, Suzan Wiener, a seasoned writing parent, offers some great parenting tips. I especially liked her concept of whispering into a child's ear when you try to talk to them, because sometimes kids get so emotional and caught up that they find it hard to listen to anyone talking to them. I hope you, too, find a pearl in this mix of parenting tips. One of the reviewers for the MIDNIGHT OIL book commented, ???I wish I'd thought of writing this book.??? And while I've experienced this ???I wish I wrote that??? feeling many times after reading a book, I know that too often, the author got the idea from a single feeling: Curiosity. My curiosity paved the way to coming up with the idea for the MIDNIGHT OIL book and in my article, I will show you how you can use your curiosity to turn it into a book, too! Enjoy this issue! Hugs, Dawn Colclasure Editor and Publisher http://dmcwriter.tripod.com/ ******************************************************************* Quotes for the Month ???Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.???--Marie Curie ???The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.???--Ellen Parr ???Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning.???--William Arthur Ward ???Curiosity may have killed the cat, but where human beings are concerned, the only thing a healthy curiosity can kill is ignorance.???--Harry Lorayne ???I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.???--Albert Einstein ???I think, at a child's birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift would be curiosity.???--Eleanor Roosevelt ???The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reasons for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.???--Edmund Burke ???When curiosity turns to serious matters, it's called research.???--Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach The above quotes came from Quote Lady's Quote of the Day and Inspirational Quotations Site (http://www.quotelady.com ). ******************************************************************* EDITORS ARTICLE How to Turn Your Curiosity into a Book! By: Dawn Colclasure ?© 2004 Call me crazy, but I read them. The Acknowledgments page in every book and novel never passes me unread. As a writer, I'm well aware of the sacrifices we put into writing our books. I'm well aware that people will help us out (especially if they know theyll be thanked later on in a book). And so I read the Acknowledgments page of Chris Gavaler's novel, Pretend Im Not Here. But the day I did that, it changed my life. It changed my perceptions as a writing parent. It changed my feelings of loneliness in my constant struggle to balance writing and parenting. It changed everything. Because when Chris thanked his young children for taking naps so that he could write his book, I immediately sat down to write him an e-mail along the lines of ???How the heck did you DO that????? I didn't want to know how hed managed to get his kids to take naps (though it would've been nice to know!!). I didn't want to know how he'd managed to keep his desire to write a book alive amid the chaos of parenting. I wanted to know how he was able to write a book over the course of an unpredictable schedule. My curiosity led me to write about how he (and other writing parents) managed to ???do that,??? too. This turned into a series of articles I wrote for Write From Home (http://www.writefromhome.com/ ), then a book I will soon be holding in my hands on how other writing parents have done it, too. And it all started with one e-mail. But, more to the point, it began with my curiosity. I had NO ANSWERS on how to be a successful writer AND a good parent, too. Sleep deprivation, a cranky baby, erratic naptimes and copious feeding schedules meant my writing time became compromised. But my curiosity on how to solve this problem pushed me to write a book about it. I am no longer curious about how to be a great writing parent, because my book gave me the answers, support and encouragement I needed to ???never give up??? and ???find balance??? (to quote a couple of writers in there). This only serves as a reminder that a good deal of books out there began with a writer's curiosity. They were curious about how something is done, why something exists, what happens if something else is done, why certain events in history occurred and on and on. This curiosity inspired them to write a book. You can do the same. The next time you are curious about something, pay attention! What are you curious about? Who can you talk to to get answers to your questions? What do books and articles say about it? (Are there any?) Explore your curiosity and the questions it inspires. Look for an angle that you can turn into a book. (For example, many books exist on certain aspects of war, presidential terms and childrearing.) Follow the rules of journalism and ask the Five Ws and H questions: Who, what, where, when, why and how. Keep asking these questions even after you get an answer. One unanswered question may be your next book subject! If a famous or not-so-famous figure inspires your curiosity, run with it. If there are no books written about them, why not write one yourself? Or, if there are, look at how you can write one offering something new and unique. Every book begins with a single idea, but curiosity can help you get those ideas for your next book. The next time you are curious about something, explore your curiosity and see where it leads you. Who knows, you just might write a book about it. *** Dawn Colclasure edits and publishes the Burning the Midnight Oil Book Zine, which is a product of her book: BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL: How we Survive as Writing Parents (Booklocker, September, 2004). Wiener Here is some good advice my family follows when it comes to raising happy, emotionally healthy children. They're simple and easy to follow. 1. Always tell them you love them, especially when they have been bad. 2. Always practice what you preach so your child will know you are sincere and really mean what you say. 3. Look directly at them when talking to them and stop everything else you're doing. They'll know that what you're saying is really important. 4. Instead of screaming at them when they are giving you a hard time, whisper it in their ear. They will definitely want to hear what you're saying because they'll think it's a secret. 5. Have simple rules and chores they can follow easily and quickly and let it depend on their age and ability. Don't give them something that will make them feel inadequate because they can't do it. Not because they're incapable, but because it's inappropriate for their age. 6. If they have to be punished, make the punishment fit the 'crime.' Don't be too harsh, when the slip-up isn't a big thing. If it's a first-time offense, a warning could suffice as well. 7. Have them invite their friends over so you can see if they're right for your child. If not, you can explain why afterward, in a calm manner. Following the above tips should help you in your goal to have your child grow up to be a well-adjusted grownup who can teach the same values to their children. Suzan L. Wiener has had numerous writing articles, poems, short stories and fillers published in many national publications and online Web sites, such as Canadian Writer's Journal, Mocha Memoirs, Writing Etc., T-zero, Poetry Press among others. She won first place in a contest for NEB Publishing. (Editor's note: Watch for Suzan's anecdote in the September 21 issue of Woman's World Magazine!) ******************************************************************* WHAT'S UP WITH THE BOOK'S WRITERS? Writing parents of school-aged children now have more time to write! But the temptation to do ???more important??? things like housework and running errands is still there. When your kids are in school, make it a rule to write for at least two hours before you do any other tasks. Tip: Take some time to network with other writing parents. Visit sites like momwriters.com (http://momwriters.com/ ) or check out some writing groups on Yahoo! to unwind. The support and encouragement really does help. Tip: For those of you with children not yet in school (or for the homeschooling crowd), take time to enjoy the Fall season with your kids. Write, but don't neglect. ******************************************************************* FORUM NEWS Check out our forum at: http://p197.ezboard.com/babsolutewrite The password is: multitask I posted about the questions I am asking in the second volume.
