Welcome Notes

Hello, Everyone!

Welcome to another issue of the Burning the Midnight Oil Book Zine!

As always, feel free to E-mail me anytime at BurningMidnightOil@mail2world.com with comments, suggestions or just to plain chat.

A belated Happy New Year to all of you! I hope you had a wonderful New Year??™s and here??™s hoping 2006 has been going smoothly for you and your writing career so far.

Please accept my apologies for yet another missed issue last month. After turning out a whopper of an issue in November, I had concerns about publishing yet another LONG issue. I am working on ways to resolve this problem; hopefully, that will happen soon. I have thought about publishing this issue in two parts but, because of formatting problems, that can??™t happen for me.

In this issue, I offer readers ideas on how to make the same old writing NEW again! Read my tips on how to breathe life into the same writing you??™ve been doing all this time to make it stand out and look brand-spanking-new again!

You??™ll also get to read an excellent book review by Liana Metal, who is interviewed in Volume One. I enjoyed reading her review and hope you find the book interesting!

Enjoy this issue!

Hugs,

Dawn Colclasure
Editor and Publisher

EDITOR??™S ARTICLE

Out With the Old, In With the New

Copyright 2006 By: Dawn Colclasure

The thing that attracts readers to your work is something fresh and invigorating. When you??™re a writer new to the scene, your fresh voice will grab readers??™ attention. Old favorites will still get read, but any writer who continues to turn out something new instead of the same old thing will not only keep readers but gain more.

This is why any writer must keep one thing in mind: You can??™t keep doing the same thing day after day, week after week.  If you want to keep readers interested, keep your writing interesting. The solution? Get rid of the same old repertoire and hit the ground running with new material.

To do this, try the following:

Start writing new stuff.

Take up poetry, short fiction, business writing or greeting card writing. Whatever your interest, the new writing will add spark to your creativity and get your loyal readers tempted to check out this new side of you.

Change your style.

If you??™re known for looooong pieces of work, try writing shorter material. Change the way you write; get rid of those sleep-inducing, long-winded phrases and pump your prose with new phrases, catchy sayings and active words.

Get a facelift.

No, I??™m not suggesting you actually pay for plastic surgery. The idea is to give your site AND your writing a new look. If you publish an E-zine, change your publishing software, go to HTML or add graphics. If you write articles, start including bulleted lists, resource boxes, links or accompanying photos/graphics.

Write about new topics.

If up until this point your writing has been about parenting or gardening, try branching out into new subjects. Start churning out articles on writing, Web site design/marketing, cultural issues or break into the humor market. This shows a whole new side of yourself to your readers, something that will snap them to attention. It just may lead to bigger and better writing projects, as well.

Branch out.

If you do a majority of writing for the Internet, downshift to newspapers and magazines for a while. Or if newspapers have been your gig, try nabbing a regular spot with a magazine or E-zine. The point is to get yourself into a media you haven??™t really played a role in for a while, or at all. Once you start popping up there, your loyal readers will not only have your usual E-zine to enjoy but they??™ll also be delighted to read all about your infamous housecleaning mishap or social faux pas in your regular magazine column.

The last thing writers want to see happen is becoming old news. Readers tire easily of all the material they plod through both on- and offline, so the need for something fresh, invigorating and ???new??? remains high. Use the above methods to keep your fresh voice in high demand and your writing career running strong.

THANKS TO EMPISH THOMAS FOR FORWARDING THIS TO ME. IT IS A WORKSHOP FOR THE BLIND BUT THEY ARE WILLING TO ACCOMODATE DEAF WRITERS, AS WELL.

Disabilities Task Force Chairman, Sanford Rosenthal of the National Writers Union At-Large Chapter, will launch a telephone workshop conference, beginning in mid March.  This conference will be for aspiring writers who may profit from a live presentation with other writers already in the field. Discussions on writing and publishing in a one hour weekly telephone conference will connect participants across
the nation. If you have writing experience or just your stories to tell, this could be your chance to further develop your skills. Ideas about what would be helpful in a workshop will also be welcomed. For more information, e-mail

Hi:

Here's the latest on my new novel, THE TOWN THAT FORGOT
HOW TO BREATHE, which concerns what happens when the art
of storytelling begins to die out in a small, coastal community.

I hope it might be of interest to you.

With all good wishes,

Kenneth J. Harvey

THE TOWN THAT FORGOT HOW TO BREATHE
by Kenneth J. Harvey
(St. Martin's Press, November, 2005)

* starred review, Publisher's Weekly

"Comparisons with Stephen King's commercial power and Annie Proulx's literary warmth are apt but glib. Harvey is an author whose storytelling prowess can speak for itself."
-- Publisher's Weekly

"An eerie and gripping story, the work of an extravagantly haunted imagination."
-- J.M. Coetzee, Nobel Prize winning author of Disgrace

"Both a contemporary and an historical novel, The Town that Forgot How to Breathe is a tour de force! It speaks of the sea: of those who are upon it, beside it, beneath it. Kenneth J. Harvey, a writer like no other, is as knowledgeable as he is adventurous. A very exceptional novel, extraordinary in its power."
-- Alistair MacLeod, author of No Great Mischief

"A novel of dazzling ambition and strange, haunting loveliness. Grippingly entertaining and bursting with life, it is an absolute triumph of the storyteller's art. Many books are hyped as 'unputdownable'. This one really is."
-- Joseph O'Connor, author of  Star of the Sea

"This is a massive book in every sense. Long, with a huge cast of strongly-drawn, idiosyncratic characters, eerie and haunting, poetic, funny, moving, it takes on the big themes-- the meaning of life, our relationship to the dead, man??™s place in the rapidly changing modern world-- and carries everything off with a surging confidence that leaves the reader, well, breathless."
--John Harding, Daily Mail (London)

"A masterful work" -- Vancouver Sun

"A triumph" -- National Post

"As compelling as it is unique" -- Amazon.ca

"The Town That Forgot How to Breathe is brilliant. Here comes overnight success. -- January Magazine

"A tightly woven fabulation" -- Globe & Mail

"Harvey paints it (Bareneed) as beautifully as any picture postcard -- Montreal Gazette

"Bang-on dialogue... spring-from-the-pages characters" -- Georgia Straight

"His best novel yet... a near-epic scale" -- The Telegram (St. John's)

Dear Dawn,

Do you want to hear and see how you can help children learn anything in eight different ways? Dr. Thomas Armstrong engagingly describes the theory and practice of multiple intelligences to the audience of the Learning In Our Own Way Conference and now you can be part of the audience too!

What can you do to work with children who wriggle and move instead of sitting still while they learn? Dr. Armstrong gives you a multitude of ideas and resources in his workshop, The Myth of the ADD Child.

Complete with Dr. Armstrong's handouts, these two DVDs present all his slides, group activities, and off-the-cuff remarks. For more information visit: http://learninginourownway.com/descriptionofrec.html

John Taylor Gatto is a former New York City and State Public School Teacher of the Year, but he is also one of the sharpest critics of compulsory education alive today. See and hear Gatto deliver his speech, Weapons of Mass Instruction, and learn why so many parents, teachers, and children are excited by his words.

The Learning In Our Own Way Conference was packed with information and thoughtful presentations on a wide variety of subjects. Buy them to share with your family, friends, library collection, and homeschooling groups. To view the recordings grouped by theme, click here:

Hugh Rosen, the author of three books and the co-editor of three other books about cognitive development, moral reasoning, constructivism, and psychotherapy entered the Creative Writing Program of the English Department at Temple University and earned an M.A. degree at age seventy.   In 2005 at the age of seventy-four, Hugh is pleased to present Silent Battlefields: A Novel.
Silent Battlefields: A Novel is a story of the impact of the Holocaust and its aftermath almost three decades later on a Polish Jewish family and a gentile German family.  When members of both families begin meeting and interacting, unexpected relationships emerge and startling revelations come to light.

The story is about Selig Kruger who, after being a member of the Hitler Youth, becomes a German soldier during the Second World War.  While on a mission to find and kill Jews who are being hidden by a Christian family in a small Polish village, he spares the life of Eva, an adolescent girl, at the risk of his own life.  Yet he bears responsibility for leading her parents to their death. But what is going to happen to their families many years later?  How are they going to react when new developments in the plot introduce twists and turns for which members of the family are unprepared?

Silent Battlefields: A Novel is a story of cruelty, and yet it is a testimony to the grandeur of the human spirit and an inspirational narrative of hope.  It will appeal to  fiction readers of all kinds.  It involves romance and mystery, adventure and philosophy, all embedded in an historical context.  It will make the readers think of their life and the priorities they have got. The language is emotionally evocative, and the writing style is plain enough to be read by people from all walks of life.
