Right? Maybe not. Some new information from a group of researchers called the Veterans' Affairs Outcomes Group has some hopeful news: the apparent dramatic rise in melanoma incidence since 1980 may not be due to an actual rise in the number of people who develop this potentially deadly cancer. Instead, it's probably due to increased rates of skin biopsies, especially in people 65 and older. In that population, skin biopsy rates for the 65-and-up set rose 2.5-fold, while the overall incidence of melanoma rose 2.4-fold. In other words, there's a rise in testing, awareness, and diagnosis that looks like a rise in incidence. The study, published in the online edition of the British Medical Journal in August, also reports that the increase in melanoma diagnoses reflects largely early-stage cancers, and that mortality from melanoma has remained stable. Good news, certainly, but let's not kid ourselves. Melanoma is still a serious and frightening problem, and it still affects a lot of people. Recent research suggests that CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10), an antioxidant nutrient that is naturally made within body cells and plays an integral role in cellular energy production, could eventually be used to aid in the prevention of melanoma. A group of Italian researchers found that CoQ10 levels were abnormally low in 117 melanoma patients in comparison with 125 control subjects without cancer. They also found that patients whose cancer had metastasized (spread) had even lower CoQ10 levels than those whose cancer was still localized and easy to remove. Other studies have found that CoQ10 may protect the skin against signs of aging that come from exposure to ultraviolet light: topical application of this nutrient protects against the damage done by UV rays, and penetrates through the dead surface layers of the skin to the living epidermis, where it helps to reduce oxidation (free-radical activity).
