Career Tip: Careers - The Choice of a Lifetime
*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
by Fabine Carren

'What do you want to be when you grow up?' We're asked that
question from the time we're little kids. Most kids come up with
a plethora of fun ideas ranging from being an astronaut and
fireman to being a doctor or princess.  Imagining what we're
going to be when we grow up is fun - when we're kids.

Another group of people looking for the right career are those
who are already employed and dread going to work each day. They
truly need to find a spot where the thought of going to work
fills them with delight. Life is too short to allow oneself to
be trapped doing work that isn't meaningful or fulfilling.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are plenty of men and
women who are stuck in careers they absolutely loathe. Going to
work each day isn't a pleasure; it's a chore they suffer through
because they have to make a living. They feel stuck and unhappy.

In some cultures today, there still remains the old tradition in
following the father's footsteps. India is a great example of
this. In India, there is an old tradition of sons learning, as
their fathers did before them, and memorizing volume-long books.
They learn such, not by reading, but by chanting. When they have
mastered these volumes, they then become a master known as
Vedic Pundits. There are other religions that also follow this ancient
tradition. In a very real sense, those who grow up with such
traditions knowing they will follow their fathers' into a career
path have it much easier.

But, what about those who have no idea what to do with their
lives? That's where career counselors come in.A career
counselor's main goal is to help people determine what career
would best suit them. For example, imagine a middle -aged woman
goes to a career counselor. She's unhappy with her current job,
and she wants to find a career where she can really flourish.
The career counselor may give one, or more, career or
personality tests that will tell her in which of 25 major
industries she would most likely be happy.

The tests are actually designed to determine the type of
personality the test taker has. Is our middle-aged woman a
leader or a follower? Is she independent, or does she work
better within a group?  Is she creative or artistic, or is she
strictly by the book? The test will tell if she is good with
attention to detail, in addition to making other traits that
will help determine what career might be best for her.

Let's say our test taker doesn't have a college degree. Of
course, that would put her way behind, right? Not necessarily.
Sure, a college degree looks nice, and it's required for some
positions. However, employers love to see experienced
individuals who have shown a pattern of success in their
previous jobs. Even though she doesn't have a college degree,
our test taker does have the experience to prove she has
initiative, and she knows how to survive and thrive in the real
world.

However, these results should not be taken as written in stone
and being unchangeable. While education reflects that one has
been exposed to knowledge and experiences that not everyone else
has had, it also indicates that a person has possibly endured
some very boring lectures and learned how to beat the system in
order to get good grades and a diploma.

A day or two later, pull that list out of the drawer, and read
over your thoughts. Do you see a pattern? Is this an ah-ha
moment? Many psychologists have claimed that by writing down
what career path you think others should follow, you'll see a
reflection of yourself. That reflection will tell you what you'd
be best at and which career path you might really want to follow.

One inexpensive way to determine which type of career might be
most fulfilling for you is to make a list of at least
twenty-five people that you know. Then write out a paragraph for
each one that states what type of work and which kind of company
you feel that person is best suited for. Set these aside for a day,
then go back and find the common qualities that are in each one.

Advertising Tip: Three Keys To Crafting Successful Print Ads
*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
Copyright ?© 2005 Michele Pariza Wacek, Writing USA
http://www.writingusa.com

Want to create print ads that get results? Below are three keys
to get you started.

1. Write for the eye. Print ads are visual. Therefore, craft
ads with the eye in mind.

Eyes are kind of picky, though. So, here's a checklist of
what eyes like and don't like:

 * A catchy headline that encourages them read more.

 * Art, such as photos, illustrations, clip art, shapes, etc.
Eyes like art. When you create the ad, create words AND the
visual at the same time. Words and visuals should work
   together.

 * Designed in an interesting, intriguing, attention-getting
manner. Eyes like that. Remember, graphic designers are your
friends. If you don't have training in graphic design, I
strongly urge you to hire a graphic designer to create your
ad. The results will be well worth it.

 * White space (blank space in the ad). Eyes like white space.
Eyes don't like print ads stuffed with words and/or art.
Those ads look way too difficult to read and comprehend. So
eyes will skip over those ads and find other open, clean ads
to look at. (And if they do, you might as well have never
bought the ad in the first place.)

2. Write for the busy eye. Nobody is reading a newspaper because
they want to see your ad. (Okay, your mother is the exception.)
People are reading the paper because they want information.
Reading your ad is an afterthought. So, they aren't going to
spend a whole heck of a lot of time on it.

A common mistake is asking print ads to do too much. To be
successful, print ads must:

 * Capture the attention of your potential customers,

 * Encourage those potential customers to remember what you
   want them to do,

 * Then persuade them to actually do it.

That's a lot to ask for one little print ad.

Print ads should have one message and one message only. The more
"extras" about your business you start throwing into the ad, the
more convoluted the ad is going to become, and the less likely
your potential customers will act upon your ad.

Now at this point you may be thinking "Okay. We need one message.
That message should be to get my potential customers to buy
something, hire my services, donate money, become a volunteer,
etc. Right?"

Well...

For one thing, that's a pretty big leap for your potential
customers. Getting potential customers to buy without first
developing a relationship with them is, again, asking an awful
lot for one little print ad. You might be better off inviting
potential customers to take one small step in the buying
process. For instance, stopping in the store for a free gift,
logging on to your Web site to enter a contest, putting their
names on your mailing list, trying a demo version of your
product, etc. Let them get to know you.

3. Keep your target market in mind. Your message should be
focused on your customers' needs, not your own. Getting
customers to buy your products and services is YOUR need.
How your products or services solve your customers' problems
is THEIR needs. See the difference?

That's why so many retail stores have sales. They're effective
because they're solving a need (saving customers money). But
saving money is not the only need. There are many others.

You should also think about ways to add value without bargaining
on price (this position can backfire). Contests, free gifts,
free reports, free food -- stuff like that. Think outside the
box. And use that value as a way to set yourself apart.

Creativity Exercises -- Learn by example

One of the best ways to learn how to craft successful print ads
is to study what's out there.

Get out a newspaper or a magazine and open it. See where your
eyes go. What ads attract your eyes? What ads drive them away?

Which ads have headlines that intrigue you? Graphics that
capture your attention? Copy that encourages you to find
out more? Why?

Now look at ads that do nothing for you. Why don't you like
them? Are they too cluttered? Too difficult to understand?
Have a headline that makes you yawn?

Sometimes you can learn as much, if not more, from bad examples
as you can from good ones.

Health Tip: Mediterranean Diet Key To Long Life
*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
by Dr. Earl Mindell

There are so many paths toward eating healthy that even the most
staunch veggie-phobic can find one that agrees with his or her
taste buds. Across the globe, cuisines built around an abundance
of fresh fruits and vegetables have been raised to an art form.

There's East Indian food, with its curries, lentils, legumes,
yogurt, and plenty of vegetables like peas, cauliflower,
eggplant, and spinach. There's Chinese food, with stir-fried
cabbage and other vegetables, steamed rice, tofu, and fish.
(Sometimes a little heavy on the sweet sauces and deep-fried
ingredients.) Japanese food is out of this world-there are few
more delectable, decadent, and good-for-you repasts than a
platter of raw salmon and ahi tuna with shredded cabbage, pickled
ginger, and a little wasabi. The most current research is
revealing how another kind of cuisine may turn out to be the most
full-to-the-brim fountain of youth yet: the Mediterranean diet.

Two studies recently published in the September 22, 2004 edition
of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reveal
just how healthful this diet-the traditional fare of Italy,
Greece, and other countries in and around southern Europe-appears
to be.

In the first study, researchers enrolled 180 men and women who
had symptoms of so-called metabolic syndrome, or pre-diabetes.
Their symptoms included high blood pressure, increased
contractility of blood vessel walls, high insulin levels and high
blo od sugar (decreased insulin sensitivity), and high blood
lipids. Metabolic syndrome is known to increase risk of
cardiovascular disease. Half of the study group was instructed in
detail on how to eat a Mediterranean diet (based on vegetables,
fruit, beans, nuts, fish, olive oil, and red wine in moderation);
the other half, the control group, was given more general
guidelines on how to eat a prudent diet (50-60 percent
carbohydrate, 15 to 20 percent protein, 30 percent or less fat).
They were also instructed to exercise.

Over the course of three years, the men and women who ate the
Mediterranean diet showed greater improvements than the control
group in nutrient intake, measurements of blood vessel function,
blood lipids, insulin sensitivity, markers of inflammation
(including C-reactive protein), and body weight. At a two-year
follow-up, only 40 members of the intervention group (those who
went on the Mediterranean diet) still had symptoms of metabolic
syndrome; 78 of the control group still had those symptoms.
Those are some striking results!

Before you dash off to the market to buy extra-virgin olive oil
and spinach.there's more. Researchers in Europe give the
Mediterranean diet more kudos with their study, Healthy Aging: A
Longitudinal Study in Europe (HALE).

They enrolled 1,507 apparently healthy males and 832 apparently
healthy females, all between the ages of 70 and 90, in 11
European countries. They kept track of their diets, physical
activity level, alcohol use, and smoking habits. By the end of
the 10-year follow-up, 935 had died: 371 from heart disease, 233
from cancer, 145 from other causes, and 186 from unknown causes.

Subjects of the HALE study who combined a Mediterranean diet,
moderate physical activity and alcohol use, and a non-smoking
lifestyle had a striking 50 percent decrease in risk of death
from any cause during follow-up. Lack of adherence to this
low-risk pattern was causally associated with 60 percent of the
deaths.

Don't have an Italian or Greek mother or grandma who can teach
you how to cook Mediterranean? Check out a book called The Omega
Diet: The Lifesaving Nutritional Program Based on the Diet of the
Island of Crete, by Artemis P. Simopoulos and Jo Robinson.
