Life Tip: Personnel Turnover and Leadership Thinking
?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»
by Dale Collie

Some people tell me that as many as 75%  of all employees are
actually looking for or thinking about finding a new job because
they are fed up with their workplace stress.

No matter what business you're in, this turnover is  going to impact
your bottom line.  As people lose  interest in their current
employment, their productivity takes a dive,  absenteeism climbs,
and the company takes it on the chin.

Most of these people are smart enough to avoid getting fired,
but they truly don't care about the old company anymore.  They
are searching  for a way to make a change.

It might take awhile, but your company is going to have to pay
the cost of recruiting and training new people, and your
productivity is going to suffer again, until the new people are fully
on the job and fully prepared.

This issue caused less concern in the past because staffing levels
were adequate for the work being done. Remaining staff could
take on some extra work while the company scouted around
for new employees. But those days are gone - gone with lean
manufacturing and flat management  structure.

Here are 5 things you can do to avoid the extraordinary cost of
personnel turnover.

1.  Find out what employees like about your company and do
     more of it.

2.  Find out what they don't like about you company and change it.

3.  Find out what employees like about your competition and see
if that will work in your company.  We're not talking about
product competition; we're focused on what the job market
     has to offer.

4.  Find out what's causing all the stress in your company and
overcome it with solid leadership and communications strategies.

5.  Find out about employee family concerns and other external
stressors.  Provide seminars, training, and coaching to help people
     overcome these stressors.

A few old-thinking managers/leaders are still around, those who think
that the paycheck and annual vacation are all we owe employees.
The basic compensation and fringe benefits are not enough any more,
and these geezers will find themselves in trouble as the new breed
walks in with a good understanding of what it takes to control stress
and maximize productivity.

Home Biz Tip: 6 Professional Businesses You Can Start from Home

1.  Consultant
Being a consultant requires you to have specialized knowledge and
experience in a particular area.  This knowledge and experience must
be in demand.  Some Consultants charge by the project or by the hour,
$50 to $300 per hour.  Other Consultants charge by retainer.

2.  Web-Site Designer
Web-Site Designers create web sites for clients.  As a Website-Designer
you must decide if you want to just design the website for the client or
design the website and maintain it for the client.  Web-Site Designers
generally charge by the project or by the hour, $30 to $120 per hour.
Retainers or lump sums are usually charged for ongoing and large
projects.

3.  Speaker (Workshops/Seminars)
Speakers travel around the country or abroad if necessary presenting
information of interest to clients/customers. Whatever the topic, clients/
customers must be willing to pay to learn the information.  Charges and
compensation will differ greatly depending upon meeting space rental
fees, the length of your workshop/seminar, your clients/customers
(corporate vs. individuals), etc.

4.  Tax Accountant (Tax Service)
You can open your own tax service without being a Certified Public
Accountant (CPA).  Tax services such as H & R Block and Jackson
Hewitt offer tax classes in anticipation of hiring some of their students
during tax season.  These classes along with other regular tax classes
should provide you with a good foundation in tax regulations and give
you the knowledge necessary to open a tax service.

Tax Accountants usually charge by the hour, $40 to $120.
Accountants who specialize in particular tax areas get paid more.
Set rates are sometimes charged for repeat customers.

5.  Grant Writer
To become a successful Grant Writer it takes great skill.  This skill is
developed over time.  Most people develop the ability to grant write
by working for a nonprofit organization.  However, there are many
seminars and workshops that can teach you how to write successful
grants.  One of the more renown is presented by The Grantsmanship
Center, http://www.tgci.com.

Once you begin to deliver proposals that win grants you will become
in demand with nonprofit organizations that are always looking for
successful Grant Writers.  The majority of your clients will be nonprofit
organizations.

Charges and compensation differs greatly and are dependent on the
project.  Normally, Grant Writers get paid $40-$70 per hour.  For
larger projects a set fee can be charged based on an estimation of
how much time it will take to complete the project.  Sometimes Grant
Writers are paid on commission.  They are paid a percentage of the
grant if they win it.

6.   Freelance Writer
Freelance Writers write articles for magazines, newspapers, newsletters,
websites, etc.  In order to become a Freelance Writer you have to be
able to produce publishable work and sell it consistently to periodicals.

Compensation varies depending on the project.  Most periodicals pay
preset rates for freelance submissions.  Freelancers may also be paid
by the hour for projects.

Computer tip : Deleting shortcut icons
?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«?»?«

You can safely DELETE shortcut icons. You know it's a shortcut
when you see a small arrow in the lower left corner of the icon.
Also, you can double check yourself by RIGHT clicking any icon,
looking at its PROPERTIES and you'll see if it's a shortcut or
not.

Every item that makes up the stuff you see on your computer
screen (called "objects" in techie-speak) has associated
properties. Just as there are properties of a pencil (it's
cylindrical in shape, made of wood, has an eraser, etc.) there
are properties of computer files. (Their size, the date they
were created, where they live on your hard drive - called the
"path" - etc.)

So which icons can you safely remove?

Well, here's a list of what you CAN'T remove.

1. My Computer
2. Network Neighborhood
3. My Documents
4. Recycle Bin

(Actually, you can even remove the above, but that's even more
advanced, and you have to use a special program to do it.)

AP and UPI reported that the French government announced
yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "run"
to "hide."

The only two higher levels in France are "surrender" and
"collaborate."

The action was precipitated by the recent fire which destroyed
one of France's white flag factories, disabling their military.

An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped
for speeding. The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest's
breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car.

He says, "Sir, have you been drinking?"
"Just water," says the priest.
The trooper says, "then why do I smell wine?"
The priest looks at the bottle and says, "Good Lord!
He's done it again!"

My husband decided life would be easier if he wired a new
light switch in the master bedroom to save us from fumbling
in the dark for the lamp.

He cut through the drywall and found a stash of bottles and
small boxes inside the wall.

"Honey!" he called excitedly. "You've got to come here and
see what I found."

I ran in and quickly realized that his next task would be to fix
the hole that now led into the back of our medicine cabinet.
