Sale Tip: You, Too, Can be a Salesperson
*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
C.J. Hayden, MCC

I am not a sales and marketing guru. I've written two books
on marketing and taught thousands of people how to sell
themselves, but really, I don't know more about sales and
marketing than most of you.

What I know how to do is talk to people, all kinds of people
-- restaurant owners and waiters, CEO's and receptionists,
entrepreneurs and kindergarten teachers. I don't try to sell
these people anything; we just have a conversation. But
sales happen as a result.

In my book "Get Clients Now!" I define marketing as telling
people what you do over and over. That's part of the secret
right there. I've seen too many business owners fail because
they simply don't speak up about their business. Or else
they tell someone once what they do for a living, and then
think they never need to mention it again.

But there's another piece of the sales and marketing puzzle
that often gets left out. When you talk to someone about
your business, you need to be direct, authentic, and
unattached to the outcome.

Clients and students often ask me questions like, "What do I
say when I call Mr. Big to find out if he's ready to buy?"
They're shocked when they hear my answer: "Hello, Mr. Big,
have you decided to purchase our product?"

Or maybe the question is how to follow up with someone you
met at last night's event who expressed some interest in
your service. My suggestion is to say: "When we spoke last
night, you seemed interested in my services, and I'd like to
continue our conversation."

What do you do when you fear that the client doubts your
qualifications? How about: "You seem a bit unsure of my
qualifications to do the job, and I'd like to address that.
What are your concerns?"

These are all conversations. You ask a question; they
answer. They ask a question; you answer. It's like a
friendly tennis match -- all you have to do is keep the ball
in the air, and nothing is at stake.

But that's the catch, isn't it? You think there's a lot at
stake. What if you don't get the contract, the client, the
money? So you make the conversation overly significant, put
on your marketing face and your selling voice, speak someone
else's words... and the result is anything but direct and
authentic.

What impact does this have on the person you're speaking
with? The opposite of a direct approach is an indirect one:
devious, underhanded, sneaky (check your thesaurus). The
opposite of authentic is inauthentic: phony, fraudulent,
insincere. Isn't this exactly what you have always been
afraid of -- sounding like a used car salesman or
telemarketer reading a script?

Scripts are for rehearsals. In a meeting or on the phone,
keep some talking points in front of you, but don't read.
Every word should be one you would use in normal
conversation -- use instead of utilize; fix instead of
rectify; help instead of facilitate. Get to the point
quickly, and tell the truth about it. "I'm just calling to
introduce myself," is not only an ineffective pproach, it's
a lie.

Show a sincere interest in people by asking questions about
their goals and problems. When you see a place where your
business can help, don't hesitate to say so. Be respectful
of people's time and really listen to what they say. Respond
to what you heard instead of continuing to the next item on
your agenda. Don't be afraid to toot your own horn while
staying true to who you are.

But these are just tips for changing your behavior. The real
key is in your attitude. If you can recognize that being
indirect, inauthentic, or attached to the outcome is causing
you to lose sales instead of make them, you'll have a
powerful incentive to do things differently.

HomeBiz Tip: Startup Tips For Your First Home Based Business
*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
By Kirk Bannerman

Over the past few years I have helped thousands of people start
their own home based businesses.  Many of these folks have become
quite successful and others, for various reasons, have failed to
achieve success.

People starting out in their first home based business adventure
almost always suffer information overload in the early stages of
trying to get their business up and running.  I often refer to
this as the "taking a drink from a fire hose syndrome".

For the first time home business entrepreneur there will be a
great deal of "newness" to virtually all aspects of getting their
business started.  When you combine all of this "newness" along
with the natural sense of excitement and eagerness, it is easy
to understand how people can easily fall prey to the feeling
of being overwhelmed and lost.

To a degree, the confusion/frustration/overload situation frequently
encountered in the initial startup phase is often similar to the old
saying about trying to run before learning to walk.

The steepness (is that a word?) of the learning curve depends
not only upon the particular type of business that is being
undertaken, but also upon the background and skills of the
person starting the business.  In any event, when first starting
out, people will usually try to move forward too quickly.

I caution people to come to grips with reality and to be realistic
in their expectations. Far too many folks read advertisements that
are hype and imply quick money, and lots of it, from a home-based
business start-up. It will certainly take at least a year, and in some
cases two to three years, before you should expect to begin to truly
make a significant profit from your business.

It takes a lot of time to successfully market and promote a new
business. Starting out a new business with the expectation of
earning a full time income from a part time effort is not very
realistic and is likely to lead to disappointment.

If you are planning on starting a home-based business with the
intention of spending a great deal of time with young children
or caring for a sick or elderly family member, a full-time home
business (and income) may not be a realistic objective from a
time availability standpoint. Try to reconcile your income
expectations with the amount of time that you have available to
devote to starting your home business.

You can expect to experience periods of doubt in the early stages
of developing your business...did I pick a viable business
opportunity?...am I doing the right things to develop my
business?...when will I start making a profit?, and so on.

A person working at a home based business may also experience
occasional periods of feeling isolated...a feeling which
is probably brought on by the lack of interaction with a work
force or office environment.

Whatever type of home based business that you choose to start,
you can rest assured that there will be some bumps in the road
leading to your success.  You should expect to experience the
"two steps forward and one step backward" thing and try to avoid
the ever-looming temptation to become overly discouraged when you
take one of those backward steps.  It is very easy to lose sight
of the obvious fact that as long as you have more steps forward
than backward you will eventually get ahead!

also coaches others seeking to start their own home based business. For

Health Tip: Power Sleeping starts with Understanding Sleep
*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
Craig Desorcy

Most people may not realize it but getting proper sleep
involves a complex process which not only energizes the
body but also promotes healing strengthens the immune
system. There are a lot of myths and misconceptions
regarding sleep but with a proper understanding of the
inner sleep system you can dramatically improve your
quality of life.

Power Naps:

Naps can be very beneficial for improving energy if done
properly and for the right duration. If napping is not done
properly it can actually disturb your inner sleep system,
inner sleep clock and leave you feeling tired and drained.
There are five stages of sleep. The first two stages are
considered light sleep and the last three stages are where
deep sleep takes place. During Stage 1 and 2 we can be
easily awakened.

During the latter stages we enter deep sleep which is where
major physiological changes take place including a slower
heart rate, a drop in respiration and a lower body
temperature. People usually enter deep sleep after about
45 minutes and if awakened during deep sleep the processes
can be harmed. For this reason naps should always be less
than 45 minutes. In fact, it has been determined that ten
to twenty minutes naps can be the most effective in
increasing energy levels and making you feel refreshed.

Too Much Sleep can be Harmful:

It is a common misconception that the longer you sleep the
more energy you will have. This is not true. Have you ever
noticed that when you sleep longer than usual you are often
then tired all day? Sleeping too long can actually rob you
of energy and damage your inner sleep system. This
is because one very important element of your inner
sleep system is prior wakefulness. When you sleep too

long you limit your awake time and put stress on your
melatonin levels, sunlight exposure time, and body
temperature rhythm. Too much sleep can also be detrimental
to the quality of deep sleep that you experience which can
compromise the immune system.

SMILEs :

A young man called his mother and announced excitedly that he had
just met the woman of his dreams.  Now what should he do?

His mother had an idea: "Why don't you send her flowers, and on
the card invite her to your place for a home-cooked meal?"

He thought this was a great strategy and arranged a date for a week later.
His mother called the day after the big date to see how things had gone.

"The evening was a disaster," he moaned.
"Why, didn't she come over?" asked his mother.
"Oh, she came over, but she refused to cook..."

A wealthy investor walked into a bank and said to the bank
manager, "I would like to speak with Mr. Reginald Jones, who I
understand is a tried and trusted employee of yours."
The banker said, "Yes he certainly was trusted. And he will be
tried as soon as we catch him."

You know the romance is over when you come to bed, ready to make love
to your wife, and she is on the phone, and she tells whoever she is
talking to that she will call them back in ten minutes...
---

My wife and I were traveling on the Kansas Turnpike, bucking 30
to 45 mph crosswinds. At the tollbooth, I asked the attendant,
"What do you people do in Kansas when the wind quits?"

The tollbooth attendant didn't miss a beat when she answered,
"We take the rocks out of our pockets."
---

Once upon a time, a beautiful, independent, self assured
princess happened upon a frog in a pond. The frog said to the
princess, "I was once a handsome prince until an evil witch put
a spell on me. One kiss from you and I will turn back into a
prince and then we can marry, move into the castle with my mom
and you can prepare my meals, clean my clothes, bear my children
and forever feel happy doing so."

That night, while the princess dined on frog legs, she kept
laughing and saying, "I don't think so."
