For example, do you instruct your employees to offer assistance to everyone who enters your business with the same greeting? I would like to suggest that insisting on the same procedure for all of your customers is possibly sending them to your competitors! One afternoon I had the unexpected luxury of time between appointments. It created a perfect opportunity to shop in the neighborhood. The middle of the afternoon, during the week, was an excellent opening to find a great new outfit! I was looking at items on the clothes racks when I felt a negative energy surrounding me. I looked around and several rows over a sales associate was glaring at me. When I made eye contact she screamed... "may I help you?" "No thank you", I replied. She reacted by another angry look and stomping away. Apparently it was the policy in this department store for sales people to approach each potential customer and offer assistance. Because I have a profound hearing loss, I did not realize that someone was asking me a question. However, the sales associate was determined to follow procedure and evidently had asked me several times ... "may I help you?" When I did not respond in a way that she felt to be appropriate, she became angry and her voice became shrill. Do you believe that a sales associate screaming and glaring at me encouraged me to make a purchase? Of course it didn't. I left the store immediately. That store is now out of business. I imagine they would have been more successful if they had not chased potential customers away with rudeness! What is the solution? Recognize that one course of action does not address all of your customers. Perhaps a person is hard of hearing or that English is not their first language. There are many reasons that a potential customer does not reply exactly as anticipated. Demanding that a customer respond as expected is creating a communication barrier. Perhaps you have more enlightened employees. Your people would not scream at customers. My hearing loss provides me with multiple opportunities for misunderstanding. I was reading the labels on paint cans, in the local hardware store, as I gathered information for a project. Someone tapped me on the arm. I looked up to face a sales associate. "May I help you?" "No thank you", I replied. This time the sales associate ask me why I was not responding to her. She informed me that she had offered assistance several times and that I had refused to answer, so she approached and tapped my arm. I explained that I was hard of hearing. She replied that she wondered why I was being rude! Me? I was minding my own business! Do you consider this an example of wonderful customer service? I don't. I find it to be offensive. When I need assistance, I will request it. Again, requiring the same procedure for everyone does not provide good customer service but might actually be creating communication barriers. What can you do? A flexible policy will address the needs of all of your customers. Offering assistance to people entering your business is effective. However, if a potential customer does not immediately respond, it would be valuable to have a alternate plan. Good judgment is important. It is not necessary to force people to respond. Many people resent the intrusion. Aggressive customer service in the form of screaming, or entering into the personal space of someone, is sending your competitors business. Offering assistance is a good policy. Even better is recognizing the differences in your customers and responding appropriately. The key to great customer service is overcoming barriers to effective communication. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mary Ellen Warner, MSA, DTM is a speaker, author and coach who works with people to overcome barriers to effective communication. You also believe you are either male or female, right? You also have other roles you play in your life, like mother, father, brother, sister, employee, employer, boss, manager, in-law -- and the list, I'm sure, goes on. But have you ever thought of yourself as a miracle. Not in the sense of your birth. Of course, that is a miracle. In the sense of your every day life. Do you walk around all day long and see yourself as a miracle worker? If you did, just imagine how much taller you would stand, less rushed you would be, and how much fear you would live without. Well, sit straighter right now. Because you are. You are a miracle. You are a miracle worker, if you choose to be. You have been given that choice too. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of riding in the limo with Deepak Chopra, on his way to speak at the IONS conference in Crystal City, Arlington, Virginia. And this was one of the topics that morning with everyone in the car. We tossed back and forth the characteristics of a miracle and all the other angles. Although it was just one of many interesting conversations I enjoyed that week, this one instantly changed my life. When we got closer to the hotel, the car grew quiet except for the purring of the engine. Deepak was meditating, and I joyously recorded the wisdom of our conversation and all that was churning inside of me. In big bold letters, "If I want to have a miracle, be that miracle," flowed from my pen. I stopped, stunned. I couldn't continue writing nor look up. Tears quietly rolled down my cheek. The message was so powerful it turned into a muffled sob. My skin tingled and my cheeks flushed with embarrassment even though I wasn't sure who, if anyone, was watching me. A hand touched my shoulder. Our eyes met. The corners of Deepak????s eyes were watery too. I knew in that instant he received the same message. No words were exchanged just a nod from him. Later that day, in his stage presentation, he discussed this event incognito. The power of joined energy is a miracle. The power of our own energy is a miracle waiting for a decision to happen. It begins with our decision. We have the power of miracles. Miracles take action. It takes generosity. It takes selfishness. It takes a second, a minute, or ten minutes. The bottom line is: "If you want to have a miracle, be that miracle." Since this beautiful moment of tying energy this same message, same wording, has repeated itself in a book, and other places. Even though they weren't as powerful as that moment when our eyes locked, it still shows that we need to hear it, be reminded of it, consistently until we decide to inherent it into our daily beliefs and life. This message doesn't just work during the holiday season. It is there for our choice every waking moment. You are the tree that lives in the forest and help the forest be a forest. It is the tree that falls hard in the forest but gently ripples into the rest of the world. The miracles you create in the check out line at the grocery store with people in front of you, behind you, and the cashier, are miracles. don't just wish for miracles. Be that miracle, everyday, every second, and it begins with a new way of looking at yourself. Be a miracle to yourself and let it ripple out. Stand tall, walk like the miracle you are. Let it touch everyone today, tomorrow, next year, and the year after. The world is changing because of miracles. Be that miracle. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Catherine Franz, is a syndicated columnist, author, radio host, International speaker, and master business coach. http://www.abundancecenter.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Positive quote: "You are what you think. Is a wealth of solid gold ideas, inspiring ideas, and business know-how that anyone can use to build a successful work at home business. http://www.valerianplanet.com/w_ideas.html --------------------- --- Health Tips: It's OK to Modify Exercises for the Time Being *^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* Build up to "boy" or "plank" push ups and you'll start noticing sexier arms and tighter abs in no time at all. Not only do push ups use your arms and shoulders, they also engage the abdominal muscles and even buttock and leg muscles, assuming that you use proper f^rm and do them right. While push ups are definitely a great exercise, they're no simple feat. In fact, many females cannot do even one push up, which is how the "girl" push up came into existence. "Girl," or rather, modified push ups, allow you to set your knees on the ground, providing support to the core and assisting the arms and shoulders in the push up movement. Modifying exercises is a fantastic way to build up to doing the real thing without overdoing it in the beginning. Modified push ups wimp out on the full-body effect of the plank push up, but don't worry about that if you need time to build up. Work your way up to the more difficult push up by doing as many modified push ups as you can in one set, and then add more push ups every week until you can start to do the real thing. Make Your Meals Work for You: Snack attack? Don't reach for a bag of chips or a ready-made snack bar. Instead, grab a snack that takes a little work. When you opt for a snack food that's too readily accessible or that is as easy to eat as popping open a bag and shoveling the contents into your mouth, you're more likely to overeat or even eat these types of snacks when you're actually more bored than you are hungry. Pass on the pre-bagged snacks and get to work on a snack that's time- consuming to eat, like cracking nuts, peeling an orange, extracting pomegranate seeds, or shelling edamame pods. Not only are these snack foods healthier than pre-packaged snacks, they're also so time-consuming to eat that your body will have time to send the "I'm full" signal to your brain before you can stuff too much in your belly. Feeling full takes about 20 minutes, which is longer than most people take to eat an entire meal. Slow down and eat foods that take time to enjoy, and you may actually find your belt buckle one notch looser. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Discover The Health Benefits That Will Change Your Life!
