Trading Lesson 4: What markets should small speculators trade
If you have $7,500 or less these are the
markets you should be trading.
“Fortune favors the prepared mind.” Louis Pasteur
When I first started trading in the 90's there was actually an exchange that was created to work solely with small investors. It was called the Mid-Am Exchange. Over the years it has been absorbed and consolidated and many various exchanges offer some type of "mini" or "electronic mini" exchange contract. Often times these contracts are 1/4th, 1/3rd, or 1/2 the size of their regular size counterparts.
They offer many advantages. They allow you to test out new trading theories. They let you experiment with markets unfamiliar to you. They also can be a great way to get your foot wet when you are new to futures or forex investing.
The three major draw
backs to trading "mini" accounts, whether you are trading futures or forex, is the fact that your returns are smaller, the markets don't always move 1 for 1 with the larger contract, and that it's easy to lose discipline.
