TIP OF THE WEEK
Backup in

CLICK HERE TO READ THIS TIP AND SEE THE VIDEO
This week's tip addresses a rough area with Ubuntu Linux...using wi-fi (wireless) Internet.
I have had some of the same problems utilizing wireless Internet
as other people, so I set out to learn more about it and find as
straight forward a solution as I could. What I found was called WiFi
Radar.
I wrote about it in Day 3 of my 14 day Ubuntu only series. In today's tip, I submit to you the video version of that tip.

Audacity is a great free little program for editing sound and music.
While it doesn't offer many of the special effects and fine tuning of
professional sound editing software, it does feature most of the tools
that professionals need.
Audacity allows you to record and edit most standard audio files
including MP3 and WAV. You can also edit multiple channels and add many
cool effects.

MICROSOFT/MAC NEWS
Macs are great, but there aren't that many productivity programs
available for office use. Microsoft Office 2004 is the top productivity
suite available for Mac.
Since MS Office 2004 does everything that everyone needs, there is not
great demand for a newer version, but Microsoft says there is.
When Microsoft announced that their latest version of Office for Mac
wouldn't be released until at least January of 2008 no one had much to
say. Most Mac users just kept working on their documents in Office 2004.
GOOGLE NEWS
Google showed off it's latest beta program this week - a free cell
phone. Google is seriously considering getting into the cell phone
business with a free phone and free service that will be funded
entirely by advertising.
The project is still in development but is far enough along
that Google is bringing the general concept to the public and tech
community for feedback.
SPAM NEWS
Notorious "online pharmacist" Christopher Smith was sentenced to 30
years in prison by a federal judge this week. He is also being fined
over $5 million for violations of the CAN Spam act.

I know you play games on your
computer. I have seen you play solitaire, spider solitaire,
mahjongg, and Bejeweled. Strangely you never play minesweeper.
Did you know that if you have access to broadband Internet, you have access to thousands, perhaps millions, of free games.
Flash games are games designed with Adobe Flash animation software.
Two of the top sites for free Flash games are:
Flash247.com and Flash-Game.net
Both of these sites offer a variety of games ranging from the basic card games to shoot 'em up adventure games.
In order to play flash games you will need to download the free Flash
player if you don't already have it. You can download that here:

Dear Rick,
In the market for new PC.
Want to replace desktop with laptop.
Do photos, some business software.
Need multitasking, Have DSL. What is the difference between EIDE and SATA
hard drives. What speed is good for a
large HD: 200 +? Difference between
video cards? Do we need 256 or more for home movies and photo editing? Is Vista still having issues? Which Vista do
you recommend: home premium or Ultimate? Do they just fix them with patches or
what? Any laptops to shy away from?
JJ
----------------
Hello JJ,
EIDE
(Enhanced IDE) is the older way to connect CDROM's/DVD Burners and hard
drives to our computers. The new connection method is SATA (Serial
ATA). The speed and future is in SATA, but the difference in speed is
only perceived by computer users who work in high end editing and
creation applications like Photoshop, movie editing, role playing
games, CAD, etc.
Most larger hard drives today come in 7200
RPM and 10,000 RPM. Again, the faster the drive can spin, the faster
the data can be found, but 10,000 RPM is only needed by the computer
users I mentioned above.
I would definitely get a 256mb RAM video card in today's market and a MINIMUM of 2 GB of RAM.
Vista is Vista. It works, but it is flashy and slow. I would probably recommend going with the Premium edition.
Stay away from any laptop that doesn't have a dual-core processor or has less than 2 GB of RAM for your needs.
Good luck and happy shopping!
