Tip of the Week

7 Articles to start your learning at HelpMeRick.com

Not long ago, a commenter on the web site suggested we put up some links to our some of our best and most visited tips. I thought it was a great idea, and here are seven that I came up with. If you have your own favorite or most helpful HelpMeRick.com tips, please share them with everyone by leaving a comment below.

Geek Speek

We have been tossing this term around a lot lately, and we have defined it a few times, but it bares repeating again.

This time we are going to define Podcast as it pertains to novice computer users and HelpMeRick.com listeners.

A podcast is online audio that you can listen to or download.

Each and every show we do is posted at HelpMeRick.com. You can listen directly from your web browser or download it and listen to it on your portable audio device.

If you know how to download podcasts to your iTunes or other audio software, copy and paste this link into the podcast area.

Computer News...and comment

Mobile phone companies prepare for price war

T-Mobile announced this week that they will begin offering an unlimited voice and text plan. Verizon followed later with announcements for their own version of the plan.

As most companies are charging as much as $.20 per text message in or out and group plans become more common customers are demanding an affordable plan that covers lots of minutes and lots of text.

Analysts are already predicting that this may begin the long awaited price war between companies as they compete on services and price.

Vista SP1 - another service pack another meltdown

Microsoft is rolling out a group of updates for Windows Vista known as Service Pack 1. Service packs are not new, almost every version of Windows has had service packs that address major security, stability and feature issues.

Each and every service pack that Microsoft has ever issued has been accompanied by horror stories by early adopters and SP1 for Vista is no exception. Early SP1 adopters are reporting systems being thrown into reset loops that Windows XP repairmen have come to know so well.

As always, make sure your important data is properly backed up before proceeding with major updates like SP1.

HelpMeRick.com endorsement brings end to HD video format war

On February 12, we announced that we are finally taking sides in the Blu-ray/HD DVD war. We announced that we would be endorsing Blu-ray.

Our endorsement turned out to be the final blow for Toshiba.

Yesterday Toshiba finally surrendered and declared that they will be stopping all production of HD DVD devices.

While Toshiba has not publicly announced that our endorsement was a factor, the timing speaks for itself.

Ditching Windows is easier than ever

We have had a lot of bad stuff to say about Vista. It's slow, it is confusing and it is far from an upgrade. Over and over we have heard the comment that Vista hardly seems like Windows at all.

In fact, we are out to prove that it is an easier way to make the move from Windows XP to Linux or Mac than to Vista. It appears that computer manufacturers agree with us.

Lenovo, Dell, and HP are just a few of the manufactures that are announcing new lines of laptops and desktops equipped with user friendly Linux.

Mac folks are finding ways to run Mac OS on newer PCs. Microsoft is doing their best to pretend not to be scared, but no one is convinced. Tune in to tomorrow's show for some great inside information on why your next computer may not be a Windows system.

Poll Results

Would you consider buying a non-Windows computer?

Next week's poll:
Do Rick and Adam talk too much about Ubuntu and Mac?

Yes                53%
No                8%
Maybe            19%

Adam's Comments

If you haven't noticed yet, this week's newsletter is centered around a theme. Windows days are numbered.

Earlier this month I evaluated how tied I am to Windows. I began to realize that there are only a handful of programs that I am tied to in Windows. However, almost all of those programs have comparable counterparts available for Mac.

For those switching to Ubuntu or other version of Linux, the switch may be even easier.

We know all of the reasons not to switch. In fact, we spent years telling people on the radio that the switch from Windows to something else would mean less support, less compatibility and more of an adjustment. However, switching to Vista means less compatibility, less support, and more of adjustment than switching to an operating system once considered only a geek alternative.

Castellini on Computers has always been about helping the every-day computer user get by. We will not leave Windows users behind. We will continue to offer all the help we can to the folks who get stuck with Vista and future Microsoft products.

However, we will also focus our future efforts more on helping those same users discover how stable and easy using a computer should be. In many cases, this will mean leaving Microsoft behind.
