Hello everyone, This is a greeeaaaaat update on Kyle:) Sept 29 We had a great visit with Kyle today. He was so happy to see us all there. Kiefer and Nikita noticed a huge difference in him this time. They said he spoke more clear and was looking real good. He rolled over at one point today and his permacath pulled out on it's own which is a line he get dialysis through. They will have to put another one in. His oxygen level is up around 96 with no problems. ( With the next week his Trac could be taken out) Today they tried him on liquids for the first time in 2 months. He did real well. They hvae to thicken any liquids he drinks so it's almost the same consistancy as warm honey dribbling. This is to enable him to swallow better and to help prevent it from going into his lungs. The reason being is , his swallowing muscles are a bit weak yet and need to strenghten a bit more so everything he puts in his mouths goes to his belly and not his lungs. He also had a couple of bites of food today. (They had it blended like baby food for him) The food itself didn't sit too well because its been so long. We saw alot more of *Kyle* in his expressions and actions today. He's very polite and soft spoken as always. Kiefer and Nikita saw more of dad also. I asked him to tell them to behave for me and he did and he continued to tell them to listen and to not talk back and he eyed Nikita for that one. He told me to make a list if they misbehave so he can handle it later when he gets home * Smiles* He is getting more and more memory back each day. He also still gets confused by his dreams and some memories. Today he thought he was in the hospital due to a war wound. Kyle can read without any problems & tell time. Some things he won't be able to call to memory until he sees them again. All his nurses think the world of him and say he's a sweetie. ALSO....More big news.....They are having him assessed by a more intense therapy unit right there at OUS. This means if the other unit thinks he's ready, they will move him over there and they will begin a very intense daily therapy schedule. This means he will get 3 hours a day with various therapy departments and this ought to really increase his recovery. P.S ( Kyle also knew today who my mom was (I asked him her name and he said Patty) which alot of people call her and her name is actually Patsy. He also asked if she was coming for a visit. I told him, likely Christmas she'll be down.) He smiled.) So I think that's about it for today. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Combine egg whites and cream of tartar in the bowl of an electric mixer. Whip on medium speed until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until whites are shiny and firm, about 3 minutes. Fold in ground almonds. Fill a pastry bag fitted with Ateco #864 star tip with meringue. Pipe out 2-inch- round cookies onto prepared baking sheets. Place in the oven, and bake until the meringues just start to color, about 15 minutes. Turn off the oven, and let the meringues dry for 4 hours or overnight. For a quicker method, reduce the heat after 15 minutes to 175?°, and cook for 1 1/2 hours. Remove from oven, and let cool completely. Meanwhile, scald cream in a small saucepan. Place chocolate in a medium mixing bowl, and pour hot cream over chocolate. Whisk until chocolate is smooth and melted. Let cool completely. Fill a pastry bag with chocolate filling, and pipe out onto half the cookies??”the bottom sandwich halves. Make sandwiches with remaining cookies, and serve. Sandwiches can be stored in airtight containers for 2 to 3 days. In a separate bowl whisk the eggs. Combine the sugar & water in a saucepan & bring to a boil for one minute. Slowly pour the sugar mixture over the yolks, constantly whisking, & beat mixture again. Melt the chocolate & butter in a stainless steel bowl placed on top of a saucepan of simmering water. Add peppermint. Remove the bowl from the heat & let cool until just warm. Fold in the egg mixture & then the whipped cream into the chocolate. Refrigerate the mousse until set, about two hours.
