Further Information

A series of lunchtime and evening performances will take place from August 7th to 11th in the British Library’s Piazza. From the sounds of Senegal to an ‘unplugged’ acoustic selection of Bob Marley’s greatest hits, the Summer Sounds series at the British Library offers something for music lovers of all ages and backgrounds.
Dego, a new UK/Senegal band that emerged in London this past Spring, will play Afro-Mandingue music mixing traditional Senegalese melodies and rhythms with their own original material. A must for lovers of Senegalese music, the mesmerizing sound of the Kora (a 21-stringed harp), compelling vocals and grooves from the percussion, drum kit and bass will provide a vibrant and authentic atmosphere.
Also included in the series of performances is Black Voices, a collective of powerful women’s voices that now have a global reputation of excellence. Black Voices was established in 1988 in Birmingham, and is a female performance company and quintet who "sing in oral tradition". All five members started their singing careers in the black churches and have a thorough grounding in the music of a black international community. From the oral traditions of Africa, right through to modern contemporary arrangements, the world renowned group will deliver a moving and enjoyable performance.
The British Library is also pleased to present Raj Kumar a north Indian dance display featuring an award winning 10 year old dancer, Saberi, who will be accompanied by live music from family members. Saberi learned Kathak dance from the age of 2 and gave her first public performance aged 4 in Calcutta. She belongs to a huge musical family of five generations of Jaipur Gharana and her guru is her own grandmother Susmita Misra, the best Kathak dance guru of India.
The week of performances also includes Bob Marley Unplugged, a band that will play an acoustic selection of the great Bob Marley, featuring singer Prince Malachi, a roots and cultural vocalist. The South Bank Gamelan Players will delight the crowds on Thursday 10 August. The players are 15 musicians who will perform alongside a stunning dance display. The Summer Sounds series offers free admission and no booking is necessary.
