The spoken word movement has
proved to be the most formidable creative force of the 20th Century.
Much of its success can be laid at the feet of poet, actor, radio host
and reggae artist Mutabaruka. The voice of a revolutionary generation,
he embodies the international power of Jamaican activism through the
word. Inspiring urban griots internationally since the 1970’s, Mutabaruka
is an arresting performer, mastering the art of uniting the elegance
of speech with the rhythm of the drum – the godfather of dub poetry.
In a one-night only opportunity,
as part of the Word Power International Black Literature Festival and
Book Fair * Mutabaruka will be performing and in conversation. In honour,
emerging spoken word poets will be opening the evening.
*Word Power International Black
Literature Festival and Book Fair runs from 13-14 October and is organised
by Centerprise Trust. Visit their website www.centerprisetrust.org.uk.
