Groundation

Groundation captures the essence of true roots reggae and aim to expand the genre by blending elements of both jazz and dub into their sound. Internationally renowned, they’ve toured Europe’s hottest reggae festivals, playing before crowds from 5,000 to 35,000. They have headlined after Black Uhuru at Summerjam in Germany, and now continue to bring their conscious, jazz-infused reggae to the masses with their new album, Dub Wars.

The name 'Groundation' is a Rasta term, meaning an attempt to get everyone on the same level, so people can talk and feel free to educate and learn from each other, rather than coming from a hierarchy, or class situation. But the group are not your typical dub reggae musicians, coming as they do from non-Jamaican backgrounds but with a genuine affinity for the music.

Founded in the fall of 1998, when musicians Marcus Urani, Ryan Newman, and Harrison Stafford, came together to form the core of the seven piece pioneering group, Groundation’s approach resembles the technical yet brilliant style of the Easy Star All Stars, famous for their Dub Side of the Moon Project. Their technical prowess is clear, and this lends a different style and vibe to their music, giving the traditionally rough Dub sound a refined, complex, 21st century twist.

In November of 2004 Groundation emerged from the depths of the studio with their 4th album entitled “We Free Again” to critical acclaim. Their previous release “Hebron Gate” received worldwide acclaim including a nomination for Germany’s coveted “World Music Award”. For this most recent release, Dub Wars, Groundation united for the first time in reggae history Apple Gabriel (Israel Vibration) and Don Carlos (Black Uhuru) for a Dub explosion.

Dub Wars is Groundation's first full-length dub CD, and combines tracks from Hebron Gate and We Free Again. These dub versions were engineered by Jim Fox (Lion & Fox) and re-worked by Groundation keyboardist Marcus Urani to unearth the bassy depth of the Groundation sound. Cargo will host the band’s UK debut, and they will be playing tracks from their two previous albums as well as making sure the London crew enjoy the Dub reprise. With DJ support from the MuffJam crew.

‘Groundation spring from Northern California. but they have gained fans around the world for their jazz-influenced roots reggae. Singer Harrison Stafford channels Jamaican stars like Eek-a-Mouse and Toots Hibbert so effectively that it's hard to believe he's a white professor from Sonoma State University (he taught the school's first "History of Reggae" class). This collection gives the dub treatment to tracks from the group's stellar albums Hebron's Gate and We Free Again, adding a hypnotic resonance to their groove-based songs.’ – Rolling Stone Magazine.
