Hi there,
Sue here, this month I am going to look into the topic of distractions. In life there are many of these, sometimes
they can be rather major, like sickness or personal hiccups which we cannot avoid and then there are the times
where we get distracted by the small things. If your like me it takes weeks to even realize that you have wandered
off the track.
In my article today I will discuss some of the ways that we can keep ourselves to the task at hand. |

New website design pending! Keep your eyes open...
Meanwhile, as I think I mentioned last month, I'm looking at offering a range of the ebooks I've bought & found
interesting/useful/good value via the site. Of course, it's never as easy to do as it looks, is it? ;-)
Right now, I'm in the process of checking out payment solutions. This is where it gets interesting. Until I know
how well they work, I dont want to set it all up & then have to dismantle it again, but without actually using
them, I can't tell how well they'll work. Catch 22 - right?
Well, I did have an idea. Because you are already a subscriber, I thought I'd pick a couple of the best ebooks
and offer them - just to you guys - at half to quarter the going price, just so I can check them out. I can only
do this for about the next 3 weeks, after then I should have an idea how well these guys work. IF they dont work
out (and I'd like to hear if you do have any troubles with your order, please!) then I'll have to offer another
few ebooks, for another few weeks, while I check out the next option on the list... Get the idea?
Anyway, the two selections for this round are below in the Special offer section. Please remember, Paymate (the
guys I'm testing) operate in Australian dollars, so if you're overseas, bear in mind the conversion rate. If you're
in the US, you're laughing. Our dollar's only worth half of yours! You dont have to be registered with them to
pay via credit card, either. Dont forget - let me know if anything goes wrong with the order - write down your
receipt number and email me problems@self-positivity.com. As
soon as I get the email from them (or you) confirming payment, I'll email you back either the book or the link
to where you can get downloading, since there's too much in the Power Pack to send via email. Oh, and thanks again!
(suggestions welcome what topics/books you want to see next month...) |
I'm realising more & more these days there is a huge gap (chasm, really) between knowing a thing and living
that knowledge. You know how it is - you read heaps of self-improvement books, you go to all the seminars &
listen to people saying "look, I did it, ANYBODY can do it", buy the audio courses etc etc, but all that
knowledge doesn't make a lot more difference, except to make you feel frustrated that what you know you
can accomplish, for some reason isn't happening for you.
Oh, yes, and eventually maybe feel like you should just accept what 'everyone' keeps telling you - that it can't
be done - and get on with living like everyone else.
When I focus on a situation like that, and try to get a better understanding of it, usually my mind throws up an
image, or allegory. The image that comes to mind, for me in this case is of a ship in harbour. Me. Got the maps,
no problem there. Know where I'm heading, no worries. Ready to face the stormy weather when I leave the port behind,
because I KNOW you get tested on your resolve with these things. Problem is actually leaving the port. Then it
clicked.
All the people around me, still part of my life, who keep telling me not to follow my dreams, keep saying that
it can't be done, or that I'm being 'unrealistic' - while I'm attached to them I've got a multitude of hawsers
still tied to the shore. The known, the safe, the 'accepted' way of doing things rules there - so it's the 'sure'
as well. While I've got those lines tied up, & am letting their thoughts take root in my life (my ship) then
I wont be able to leave.
Am I saying that you need to head off alone? No. But choose your crew carefully. You want people around you who
want to set sail, because they'll let the hawser's go. You need people who will help you steer the ship,
keep her afloat & heading where she's planning to go, not a reluctant crew who'll mutiny & try to turn
her around as soon as you manage to make some headway.
There are people in your life who will want to stay on familiar ground, and that's fine. We all know people like
that. There are usually many more of them than there are the adventurers like you & I. Just dont let the lines
of their convictions take root in your life, and recognise that sooner or later, once you've set sail, you will
find them falling away behind you. You've got to be prepared for that, as much as for anything else on this journey
of life. Equally, you may decide there's too much holding you to the sure/shore, and you're happy to forget about
casting off & going your own way. Whichever way, remember that YOU are the captain of the ship, and it's your
decision. Fair winds & good sailing!
Best Wishes

The dictionary term for distraction is. Diversion of mind or attention, or interruption.
In our everyday lives interruptions are always going to be inevitable but most of the time we are able to get back
to the task at hand rather quickly. An example of small interruption would be the phone ringing when we are in
the middle of making a cake. But a distraction would be that we forget we are making the cake and go and start
something new. Now in life many people get distracted from finishing the job that they started. Especially if you
have bitten off more than you can chew and the task at hand is one that is going to take some time before you see
any results. In this situation it is best to aim for small goals so that you see immediate results along the way.
This helps us not to be looking for something to take our mind of what we are doing.
Keeping fully focused on one thing at a time requires a lot of fine-tuning. Another way in which to keep your feet
on only one path is to set yourself priorities. Write out a list of the things, which are the most important to
you and then pin this up somewhere you can see it. Always keep going back to the list and make sure that you are
still keeping your priorities where they should be.
Sometimes there is the need to change things around for a while but if you begin to go off like I recently did
and find yourself learning how to play a piano instead of doing your study, then the distraction has taken over
the priority and needs to be put back into its proper place. How to do this is simply by picking up where you left
off.
Don??™t feel that you have let yourself down or avoid going back to the drawing board, just jump right back in and
get on with it.
A time schedule may be needed when there are just too many things which demand your time and even seem to be of
equal importance, you can give each task a time limit which is manageable and then you feel you have achieved all
that you set out to do.
But schedules need to be loose and not rigid or other distractions may sneak in and begin to make you feel a bit
overwhelmed.
Combating a distraction is not always the easiest thing to do but as you get more and more used to doing this it
becomes easier and it takes more to throw you off your path.
You begin to feel more in control of your life when you are in complete charge of what you decide to do with your
time and how much time you spend on each task you have. |
