Reboot
Your Life™
"Really, are you a Positive Person?"
It
has been said that history repeats itself. Usually we take
that to mean in worldwide events. It happens in our personal
lives as well. Recently this has been drawn to my attention
more and more: in my life and in the lives of others.
In the past few weeks through emails and phone calls I have discovered
a characteristic in people that I hadn't consciously noticed before:
people talking about being on their path and being positive
when in fact nothing could be further from the truth.
They spout all the New Age Metaphysical mumbo-jumbo and not achieve the
results they desire. They wonder why things go wrong in their
lives. Why are they depressed? Why do things happen
to them that they consider bad? Why do certain topics or
people upset them? Yet they continue to believe they are
heading in the right direction or doing what needs to be done in order
to achieve their goals.
A lady had called me to tell me the problems she was having with her
husband. In the conversation she told me how positive she
was. Yet, here she was showing anger with her husband and
complaining about different situations with him. You aren't being
positive if you are angry.
Another lady took one sentence from a conversation and became incensed
enough to tell me she didn't want to hear 'that type of stuff' only to
also tell me in the same breath she thought positively. I
think not!
It was then I realized that people don't really see where they are
being negative in their lives. They don't see how moving
forward on their journey is stopped. They don't see where
they are stagnant.
In the case of the first woman her complaining and anger at her husband
only adds fuel to the negative fire. She is focusing on the
problem, not the solution. The second woman would do well to
look at why the one sentence bothered her rather than burying her head
in the sand and not addressing the issue. Perhaps that sentence was
hitting a subconscious nerve.
When you react so explosively or intensely towards someone it is
because you subconsciously see in that other person something you don't
like in yourself. Therefore, you strike out in negative ways
due to fear.
I find it interesting that people think by avoiding certain issues or
situations they are remaining positive. They are not!
They are burying the negativity so it can raise it's ugly
head at a later date: only to repeat over and over again
uncomfortable, and sometimes quite negative scenarios.
At this point in time you are probably wondering how a person changes
their misconceptions of being positive, and actually live a positive
life. If you aren't asking that question, you aren't ready
for the answer. If you are asking yourself that question,
read on.
Instead of becoming angry and frustrated with her husband, the first
lady should have started asking herself questions. What about
his behaviour do I find upsetting and why? Is there an
experience or a person in my past that has lead me to believe this
behaviour is wrong? How can I change my thinking so that I
can learn to deal with my husband, rather than change him?
Writing an angry email or addressing a situation in anger is not a
positive life action. Searching herself for the reason she
reacted so negatively to something that was said would be the positive
course for the second lady. Or even ignoring the remark and
noting it as being just the way the speaker of the remark was.
Nothing personal, nothing assumed. No agreement.
No rejection. Just is: just a statement.
Neither good nor bad; positive or negative. By searching her
own life for underlying causes of her reaction to the actions of
another person, she would definitely be walking the positive path she
so adamantly declared she was walking.
Both women lost out. Neither was looking with positive eyes.
One lost out on a loving relationship with her husband. The
other woman lost out on a friend who really and truly cared for her and
valued their friendship. Yet, they both say they live their
lives looking at things in positive ways.
Do you see your life moving forward in happiness? Are things
working out for you? Do you see yourself as either of these
two ladies or another scenario entirely? Do you get angry,
depressed, or unforgiving? Are you happy and worry-free?
Think about how you react to people and situations. Do you
react or act? Is it in anger or in searching for the answers?
Do you react in love and with positive thoughts? Do
your reactions or actions bring dischord or harmony? Do you
lose friends or gain them? Check your positivity meter.
What level are you on? Is it where you want to be?
Can you go higher and get more from life?
Only you know the answers to these questions. Are you really
as positive as you think you are? Isn't it about time you
found out that answer?

Just A Side Note
"I am a work in progress."
These
are the words I spoke to a friend of mine in response to her sons'
comment about me. Her 16 year-old and 18 year-old sons had
asked her a
question about me to which she had no answer. It was a
question I had
been waiting to hear from someone, anyone.
The boys wanted to
know, since I wrote motivational and inspirational material,
why I was
afraid to drive into Chicago? It seems they are of the same
impression most people have of authors and speakers in my
field. We
should have all the answers, be perfect, and not afraid.
Oh, I went through that
phase also. In my book, Life
is Like Making Chocolate
Chip Cookies,
I tell how shocked I was to hear swear words emit from the lips of my
most favorite New Age Motivational gurus. And yet, why should
it have
shocked me? They are human! I am too!
We tend as a society to
hold others high that we feel are more intelligent, more spiritual,
more knowledgeable, and more affluent than ourselves. Yet we
are all
from the same Source, live on the same planet, and are of the same
species. Some have had life easier. They have had
more opportunities
for one reason or another and have had development in different areas.
That does not make on person better over another.
Just because my
husband can see auras since he can remember and thought everyone could,
doesn't make him better than me. Just because I have the
ability to
know things doesn't make me better than him. Yet, other
people seem to
think we are special when in fact they could probably develop those
same talents.
It would be such a dull
world if everyone could do
everything. We wouldn't need each other. We wouldn't need
love. Your
human nature is to revere those people you consider more advantaged than
yourself in anyway. You don't see them with the same human
shortcomings you have. Yet they have them. Then when you see
a
weakness you become disillusioned. Your expectations of these
people
are unreasonable. You can then become disappointed in them if
they
don't live up to those expectations. How would you like to be
in their
shoes and have to live up to the expectations you have imposed on them?
Have
you ever thought there may be those in your circle of friends who think
of you in the same terms? They see you with abilities they
don't have.
They see you through rose-
colored glasses.
They see you the same
way you look at your standard bearer. You know they are out
there.
Perhaps they don't mention it. They may feel it and never say
a word
to you. You are special to someone!
We all need to learn that
just because someone can help you get through bad times, help you solve
your problems, and give you tools to live your life happier and more
fulfilled, does not make them better than you. It does not
make them a
god. It just means they have been there, done that, and wear
the
T-shirt. They are still a work in progress too!

Hollyhock Conference Center
Cortes Island, BC, Canada
I've been presenting workshops at Hollyhock for almost 20 years. It is
the most healing, magnificent environment you could ever imagine. The
ocean, the ancient cedars, the huge organic garden, the elegant
vegetarian fare (except for wild local salmon on the weekend, and
perhaps an evening of barbequed island oysters on the beach). They talk
about Hollyhock as a vacation that heals, and I can vouch personally
for that. This is pure magic. It's also a place where you can sometimes
bring your kids…please check on what's available for them.
