However, the nature of the deal with Hear Music means McCartney will again be free to sign with another label, or return to EMI, following the album's release. While the deal with Starbucks ends a long association with EMI in terms of his frontline pop releases, McCartney is not splitting entirely from the label. In addition to retaining the singer's solo, Wings and Beatles back catalogues, it is also understood that McCartney's relationship with EMI Classics - who released his 2006 Ecce Cor Meum album - will continue. As part of this, a guitar concerto he is working on is likely to be released through the classical division. There has already been much media speculation that McCartney's defection to Starbucks was prompted by his unhappiness at the way EMI promoted his last mainstream release, 2005's Grammy-nominated "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard." A spokesman for EMI says, "We fully respect McCartney's decision to try something new with his new record, and we wish him every success. ----- Paul McCartney may perform at Al Gore's Live Earth Concert (rockradio.com) The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, The Who, and U2 might all be signing on for this summer's Live Earth concerts on July 7th. According to foxnews.com, the Stones will headline the London concert at Wembley Stadium, on a bill that will also include Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, singer-songwriter James Blunt, and modern rock outfit Bloc Party. The report adds that McCartney, the Who, and U2 will likely sign on in the coming weeks, but there was no indication of where they might perform. Artists who have already been announced include Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow, Foo Fighters, Melissa Etheridge, Duran Duran, John Mayer, American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, rapper Snoop Dogg, R&B singers Corinne Bailey Rae and John Legend, and country superstars Faith Hill & Tim McGraw. Al Gore announced a series of worldwide concerts to focus on the threat of climate change. The 24-hour event on July 7 is part of a kickoff campaign, Save Our Selves - The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis, that promoters hope will trigger a broad movement to address what the former vice president calls a "planetary emergency." Promoters said the Live Earth concerts will take place in Shanghai, China; Johannesburg, South Africa; Sydney, Australia; London and cities to be announced in Japan, Brazil and the United States. One concert will take place in Antarctica, Gore said. Promoters said the concerts - dubbed Live Earth - could reach 2 billion people through attendance or broadcasts. Proceeds will create a foundation to combat climate change led by The Alliance for Climate Protection, which is chaired by Gore. The Save our Selves campaign was founded by Kevin Wall, who won an Emmy as Worldwide Executive Producer of Live 8. -------- Special Daytrippin' Discount: To commemmorate the re-release on Feb. 22 of George Harrison's autobiography, I Me Mine, Chronicle Book Publisher has granted all Daytrippin' Readers a 30% discount off I, Me, Mine and all Chronicle Book Titles through May 2007, or FREE Shipping. Ono will unveil an outline for the foundation, to be based at Alder Hey, on a visit to the hospital on May 25. She will also attend a fund-raising ball for the hospital's charity Imagine Appeal which Ono supports. The ball is the first major event for the Imagine charity, which Ono launched in October 2005. ------ Yoko Brings Peace Project to Washington DC (from Washington Post) Yoko Ono visited Washington DC last week to bring her "Imagine Peace" project to the city. In the brief "Wish Tree" ceremony at the foot of the Jefferson Memorial, the 74-year-old Ono invited people to write wishes on small pieces of paper and tie them to the branches of potted cherry trees. Ono has installed the trees in cities across the globe and says they were inspired by temple wish trees that she saw during her youth in Japan. Soon after Ono tied on the first wish, tourists swarmed the trees to add their own. Some of the public's goals were lofty: "I wish for equality for all and an end to tyranny and poverty," read one wish. Others were humbler and more personal: "I wish everyday was swimming." Ono promised to collect all the Washington wishes and add them to her cache -- she claims to have more than 100,000 collected from trees throughout the world. The papers will be incorporated into the artist's Imagine Peace Tower, which will be installed later this year in Iceland. Ono was vague about the structure's exact design and said it would be made of light. Both the Peace Tower and the tree project are part of the artist's long-standing efforts to encourage public participation in artmaking and to promote worldwide peace and understanding. Ono began creating art around 1960. Ono also unveiled a 55-foot-tall billboard attached to Verizon Center's Seventh Street facade; it reads, simply, "Imagine Peace." Ono's citywide project includes 10 of the trees-- six near the Jefferson Memorial. . People can contribute wishes until April 15. Slips of paper and yarn are provided. Those trees will later be planted outside THEARC, 1901 Mississippi Ave. SE. The Hirshhorn tree will be on exhibit indefinitely. Ono's billboard will hang at Verizon Center until April 30. Her installations are part of "Street Scenes: Projects for DC," a continuing public-art project.
