Documentary To Spotlight Lennon's Activism

A documentary about John Lennon's transformation into an antiwar activist has started preproduction, and aims to reach theaters next year, according to distributor Lions Gate Films.

The release of "The U.S. vs. John Lennon" will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the former Beatle being granted permanent residency in the United States despite the best efforts of the U.S. government.

The film, which will center on Lennon's life from 1966-76, has received support and cooperation from the artist's widow, Yoko Ono. It will be cowritten, directed and produced by David Leaf ("Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of Smile") and John Scheinfeld (the recently completed "Who Is Harry Nilsson (and Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him)?").

There's another upcoming Lennon movie project sparking outrage among Beatles fans. The movie "Chapter 27" stars Jared Leto as Lennon's killer and Lindsay Lohan as a fan who befriended the killer. The movie is being made by Peace Arch (http://www.peacearch.com)

Mark Lapidos, President of The Fest for Beatles Fans, sent a letter to the producers of the movie expressing his concern. Here's an excerpt:

". . . I cannot tell you how upset we fans are concerning your misguided project on John's assassin. I don't think you understand how this poor excuse for a human robbed the world of one of the greatest people ever to walk the face of this earth. . . . If you go ahead with the movie, he [the killer] gets exactly what he wanted in the first place, and perhaps opening up the mind's of 100s of other sick people who might choose to try the same method to get immortality. How irresponsible of you, especially with a company name as Peace Arch. You must realize how wrong this is. I have a mailing list of over 140,000 Beatles fans and I am sure nearly 100% of them are or will be very hurt to find out about this project. I have already started to receive emails about this and each person is feeling hurt and betrayed by your project.

. . . I hope you take this very seriously, as you should. Every company should have a social conscience - AND USE IT. John's assassin was not a true fan. He was and is a sick train wreck of a human. We do not want this kind of action to ever happen again. You need to be responsible and call off this project before it is too late. Nothing good could ever come out of it.

All you need is love,
Mark Lapidos"

Mark received a response from Gary Howsam of Peace Arch. Here is an excerpt:

". . . I would argue that this film will give renewed life to the spirit of Lennon and the views he espoused - which this world is in sore need of at this time. Further, it is designed to look at a social system which would lead someone (even ill) to even think they could be in some way given meaning by committing such an act.  Lennon's killer was a sick person, very sick, which outcome was a function of the way we view celebrity.

There have been numerous films, books, etc. on the assassination of JFK, King and others. These were not to promote the assassin, but to help those who cared try to understand more fully what has come to be known about these acts which meant so much to so many of us. . . "
