Welcome to Cappuccino’s Freebie Caf?.

Good morning everyone.

As you all know, my mother was recently hospitalized due to a
massive stroke. While in there, each time there was a nursing
shift change, the new nurse would as me what language my
mother spoke as they could not understand her. Obviously,
they never looked at her file. Now, my mother speaks English,
Italian and Yugoslavian fluently, and understands Spanish. I
should also point out that her mind is crystal clear.

Tired of repeating myself day after day, when asked, I simply
replied that my mother spoke stroke and suggested to the
attending nurse that a translator was required (hee hee). The
silly nurse would reply…”OK, but, which language?” To which
I would reply, “Which part of stroke did you not understand?”

As I understand it, nurses are supposed to check the charts at the
beginning of a shift. Isn’t that what the one-hour daily meeting
is all about prior to starting a shift? NOT!!!! More like a coffee
break and chit-chat time, with patients wandering around
aimlessly. Each day, I would be asked why my mother was
hospitalized and what medications was she taking?

To this I would reply, “I don’t know. You tell me!” and, “I’m
not her doctor but when you find out, let me know.”

What is wrong with our health care system? One nurse told me
that she did not have time to look at the chart so she expected me
to enlighten her. Supposing I told her the wrong medication and
dosage? NOW THIS IS SCARY!!!!

May your hearts be happy, your mailboxes full and the
mailman forever busy. Until next week, Happy Hunting!!!!

Today’s Recipes

Boilermaker Big Game Chili (allrecipes.com)

Ingredients

2 pounds ground beef chuck
1 pound bulk Italian sausage
3 (15 ounce) cans chili beans, drained
1 (15 ounce) can chili beans in spicy sauce
2 (28 ounce) cans diced tomatoes with juice
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 large yellow onion, chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
2 green chili peppers, seeded and chopped
1 tablespoon bacon bits
4 cubes beef bouillon
1/2 cup beer
1/4 cup chili powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon dried oregano
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 (10.5 ounce) bag corn chips such as Fritos
1 (8 ounce) package shredded Cheddar cheese

Directions

Heat a large stock pot over medium-high heat. Crumble the ground
chuck and sausage into the hot pan, and cook until evenly
browned. Drain off excess grease.

Pour in the chili beans, spicy chili beans, diced tomatoes and
tomato paste. Add the onion, celery, green and red bell peppers,
chili peppers, bacon bits, bouillon, and beer. Season with chili
powder, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, oregano, cumin, hot pepper
sauce, basil, salt, pepper, cayenne, paprika, and sugar. Stir to
blend, then cover and simmer over low heat for at least 2 hours,
stirring occasionally.

After 2 hours, taste, and adjust salt, pepper, and chili powder if
necessary. The longer the chili simmers, the better it will taste.
Remove from heat and serve, or refrigerate, and serve the next day.

To serve, ladle into bowls, and top with corn chips and shredded
Cheddar cheese

Luscious Lemon Bars

Ingredients

3/4 cup powdered sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup butter
2 cups granulated sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 large eggs
Zest from one large lemon, about one tablespoon
Juice from one large lemon, 1/3 cup juice
Powdered sugar

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

1. Mix the two cups flour and 3/4 cups powdered sugar together in
a medium bowl. With a pastry knife, cut in the butter until
granular. Press the crumbs evenly into the bottom of an ungreased
8 x 13-inch baking pan. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden
brown. Set aside to cool.

2. In your medium bowl, mix the granulated sugar, 1/4 cup flour,
and baking powder. Add the eggs, zest, and lemon juice. Mix with
a spatula until smooth.

3. Pour the lemon filling over the crust. Bake for 35 minutes or
until the top starts to brown. Remove from the oven and let cool.
Use a mini strainer or sifter to dust the top with powdered sugar.
Cut into squares.

Baker’s tip: Once chilled, buttery crusts can stick to the pan
making it hard to remove the bars intact. Heat up a wet cloth in the
microwave and place the pan on the hot cloth. The heat will soften
the butter on the bottom and make removal much easier.

What's In A Name?

A good looking man walked into an agent's office in
Hollywood and said, "I want to be a movie star. "Tall, handsome
and with experience on Broadway, he had the right credentials.
The agent asked, "What's your name?"

The guy said, "My name is Penis van Lesbian."

The agent said, "Sir, I hate to tell you, but in order to get into
Hollywood, you are going to have to change your name."

"I will NOT change my name! The van Lesbian name is centuries
old, I will not disrespect my grandfather by changing my name.
Not ever."

The agent said, "Sir, I have worked in Hollywood for years... you
will NEVER go far in Hollywood with a name like Penis van
Lesbian! I'm telling you, You will HAVE TO change your name or
I will not be able to represent you."

"So be it! I guess we will not do business together" the guy said

and he left the agent's office.

FIVE YEARS LATER..... The agent opens an envelope sent to his
office. Inside the envelope is a letter and a check for $50,000. The
agent is awestruck, who would possibly send him $50,000? He
reads the letter enclosed...

Dear Sir,

Five years ago, I came into your office wanting to become an actor
in Hollywood, you told me I needed to change my name.
Determined to make it with my God-given birth name, I refused.
You told me I would never make it in Hollywood with a name like
Penis van Lesbian. After I left your office, I thought about what
you said. I decided you were right. I had to change my name. I had
too much pride to return to your office, so I signed with another
agent. I would never have made it without changing my name, so
the enclosed check is a token of my appreciation.

Thank you for your advice.

Sincerely,

Dick Van Dyke
