Winners of the April Fool’s Day Contest

Congratulations to Susan W. of London, Ontario and
Carole L. of
Brampton, Ontario, for guessing
“spaghetti”. The question was……

“On April 1st 1957, the BBC played a practical joke
on its viewers. A program showed a certain product
being harvested in
Switzerland. What was it?”

Answer……

One of the great April Fool jokes took place on
April 1st, 1957. The BBC TV programme Panorama
did a documentary on 'spaghetti farmers' growing
'spaghetti trees.' The hoax Panorama programme
featured a family from Ticino in Switzerland carrying
out their annual spaghetti harvest. It showed women
carefully plucking strands of spaghetti from a tree
and laying them in the sun to dry.

The joke was an enormous success. Hundreds of people
believed there was such things as spaghetti trees. Soon
after the broadcast ended, the BBC began to receive
hundreds of calls from puzzled viewers. Did spaghetti
really grow on trees, they wanted to know. Others were
eager to learn how they could grow their own spaghetti
tree. To this the BBC reportedly replied that they should
"place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and
hope for the best." :)

Today’s Recipes

Grilled Mushroom, Cheese and Spinach Panini

Panini literally means little breads, but in Italy it often
refers to a sandwich. Use goat cheese and arugula for a
different flavour profile.

Ingredients

1 tsp. olive oil
8 oz. sliced fresh mushrooms
1 large clove garlic, crushed
1 tsp. dried basil leaves
1/2 cup chopped oil packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained
2 cups grated old cheddar cheese
4 oval panini rolls (about 4”), halved
1 cup baby spinach leaves

Directions

In a medium frying pan heat oil over medium-high heat;
add mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3
minutes or until just until starting to brown.

Stir in garlic and basil; cook 1 minute. Remove from
heat and setaside. In a small bowl mix cheese and
tomatoes; spread evenly on bottom half of each roll.

Arrange the mushrooms, and spinach leaves, evenly
on top of cheese.

Top with the other half of each roll and press firmly.

Place in preheated sandwich grill, cook about 8 minutes
or until lightly browned and cheese has melted.

Cut sandwiches in half to serve. Makes 4 servings

If sandwich grill is not available heat a well seasoned
ridged grill pan OR a non-stick skillet over medium heat.

Place sandwiches in pan and place another heat -proof
pan or skillet on top of sandwiches; weight down with
canned goods and cook 3-4 minutes or until lightly
browned. Turn panini over and repeat for other side.
Lower heat after sandwich is browned to melt cheese.

Tip: Substitute other crusty rolls or Kaiser buns for
panini rolls OR substitute 8 slices(?”/1 cm thick)
French, Italian or Sour dough bread .

Variation: Substitute ? cup softened goat cheese
(about 4 oz) for Cheddar and baby arugula leaves for
spinach.

Glazed Chicken and Orange Salsa

Salsa

2 medium (1 cup) seedless oranges, segmented,
membrane removed, chopped
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons sliced green onions
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Chicken

6 (4-ounce) boneless skinless chicken breasts
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper

Glaze

1 cup orange juice
3 tablespoons Butter
1 tablespoon cornstarch

1. Combine all salsa ingredients in small bowl. Cover;
refrigerate until serving time.

2. Heat gas grill on medium or charcoal grill until
coals are ash white. Sprinkle chicken breasts with
salt and pepper.

3. Combine all glaze ingredients in 1-quart saucepan.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until
mixture thickens and comes to a full boil (5 to 7
minutes).

4. Place chicken onto grill; brush with glaze. Grill,
turning once and brushing with glaze, until chicke
is no longer pink (12 to 15 minutes). Cook any
remaining glaze over medium heat until glaze comes

New Drunk Driving Tactic Sweeps Newfoundland

Recently a routine RCMP patrol parked outside a bar
just off the main Highway at Goobies, Newfoundland.
After last call, the officer noticed a man leaving the
bar who was so intoxicated that he could barely walk.

The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few
minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After
what seemed an eternity and trying his keys on five
different vehicles, the man managed to find his car,
into which he fell. He sat there for a few minutes
and then threw a hook and line out the window and
seemed to be trying to catch a fish.

A number of other patrons failed to observe this crazy
drunk as they left the bar and drove off.

Finally the drunk started the car, switched the wipers
on and off (it was a fine, dry summer night) flicke
the blinkers on, then off a couple of times, honked
the horn and then switched on the lights. He then
pulled in the hook and line and moved the vehicle
forward a few inches, reversed a little and then
remained still for a few more minutes as some more
of the other patron vehicles left.

At last, the parking lot was empty; he pulled out of
the parking lot and started to drive slowly down the
road. The officer, having patiently waited all this time,
now started up the patrol car, out on the flashing lights,
and promptly pulled the man over and carried out a
breathalyzer test.

To his amazement the breathalyzer indicated no evidence
of the man having consumed any alcohol at all!

Dumbfounded, the officer said, "I'll have to ask you to
accompany me to Headquarters.This breathalyzer
equipment must be broken ".

"I doubt it," said the truly proud Newfoundlander. “Tonight
I'm the designated decoy."
