Reflections:

This week a report was released by the Lowy Institute, highlighting the potential effects of an outbreak of the H5N1 virus on the Australian economy. Described as a major new analysis, Professor Warwick McKibbin one of the world's leading economic modellers and a member of the Reserve Bank board and Dr Alexandra Sidorenko a health expert at Australian National University explored the implications of a pandemic influenza outbreak on the global economy. Their modelling predicts a sobering 30% of the Australian public could catch the virus. The resulting deathrate is estimated to range from 2,100 Australians in a mild outbreak, to 107,000 in a severe scenario.

Month in Review:

My frustration with the ever impacting access block has inspired : How to turn the emergency department into a heartless lump of cold porridge.......Ensure that there are no inpatient beds available in the hospital. All patients that need admission will now have to occupy ED beds severely restricting treatment of new patients. This is the single most important strategy. Do not wander off mission by exploring alternate ways to spread the load throughout the hospital.....

Disposition:

The Links section has been updated with my recommended distractions. Check out some of the better medical bloggers I have found.

Please feel free to suggest any that you frequent.

Take care,

Ian Miller RN.
