Bandh called against 'excesses' by Assam Rifles personnel

IMPHAL, JULY 17 (PTI)   Normal life was affected today in the border towns
of Moreh and Jiribam in Manipur following separate bandhs called by local groups
to protest alleged "excesses" against civilians by Assam Rifles personnel,
officials said.   Reports said markets, shops and business establishments
remained closed while transport services between the two towns and the rest of
the state were cancelled in view of the bandh.   The Moreh Apunba Meira Paibi
Lup (Moreh Women's Organisation) has called an indefinite shutdown to protest
the alleged beating up of several civilians by Assam Rifles personnel on July 15
and 16 following the killing of a subedar by insurgents on July 13.   Trade with
Myanmar through Moreh, about 120 km southeast of here, was badly affected by the
bandh, reports said adding that the organisers of the shutdown were demanding
the punishment of the Assam Rifles men involved in the incident.   Officials
said security was tightened at Moreh to prevent any untoward incident
and that efforts were on to hold talks with the
protestors Reports said life was also affected at the border town of Jiribam,
222 km west of here, because of a 24-hour bandh called by different students
groups to protest "excesses" against students by Assam Rifles personnel on July
15 last.

Subject: Mumbai Would Mourn and Take a Vow

[The college students of Mumbai affiliated  to the Mumbai University have in
a meeting on July 17 decided to come together and  form a human chain on the
coming 26th evening from the Rajabai Tower to the  Gateway of India, exactly a
fortnight after the bomb blasts that shook the city on  the fateful 11/7, in
memory of the victims - the fellow Mumbaikars. This also happens to be  the
first anniversary of another major crisis in the life of the city – the
unprecedented  rains and water logging a year back in which about five hundred
lost their  lives.
The chain would culminate in a  peace gathering at the Gateway, which
would take a vow to stand firmly united  against mindless and obnoxious violence
targeting innocents.
