SC stays arrest of The Hindu journalists NEW DELHI, Nov 10 (UNI) The Supreme Court today stayed till further order the controversial decision of the Tamil Nadu Assembly sentencing five senior journalists of ’The Hindu’ and the editor of ’Murasoli’ to 15 days’ simple imprisonment for breach of privilege. A case of constitutional breakdown if TN defies SC order: Ram Chennai, Nov 10 (PTI) Editor-in-Chief of ’The Hindu’ N Ram today said that if the state government defied the Supreme court’s order, staying the arrest of Six scribes including the five from The Hindu, ‘‘it can be a case of constitutional breakdown in Tamil Nadu’’. ‘‘However I don't think that they will act that much foolish,’’ he said addressing the media in the daily’s premises immediately after the Supreme Court’s stay. Ram said ‘‘we are not opportunistic and have not demanded invoking article 356 as things stand now’’. He said that the five journalists of the daily who were ‘‘resourceful enough’’ to evade the arrest would be back in the office once the SC order was clearly communicated to them and the state authorities. ‘‘We would not like to take risks and would not like them to be trapped as we know what would happen if they were caught,’’ he said answering questions. Ram said that the apex court's order once again established his daily’s and other Indian press's faith in judiciary. He said that once again it was upheld that the Constitution was supreme and not the legislature as evident from today’s order of the apex court, thanks to the instant nationwide interest and massive coverage of the press of the ‘‘undemocractic misadventure’’ attempted by the Tamil Nadu government. |
