An (as yet) imaginary account of the developments following the announcement of the Nobel Physics Prize in a Hindutva community; the lack of context and critical information (in the account below) is typical of how the mainstream press has covered Hindutva-related issues in the U.S.

All the Muslims are continually demanding with their fellow secular non-Muslim friends that impartial and independent inquiry should be made about not only Malegaon blast but all terror acts on Indian soil then why government of India is afraid of independent inquiry is a question in the minds of plenty of people

Bangla influx hard to check, says Patil
   NEW DELHI, Oct 6 –

Government today said despite taking several measures it was difficult to stop infiltration from Bangladesh, a week after Mumbai Police said five of the 11 Pakistani terrorists responsible for the July 11 blasts had crossed over from that country, reports PTI. Sharing the concern of the BSF that it was impossible to stop infiltration completely, Home Minister Shivraj Patil said the geographical conditions along the Indo-Bangla border were challenging and “it was very difficult to stop persons going from one part to another”.

Guarding the Indo-Bangla border was a challenging task due to the riverine patches and hilly terrain, he said after inaugurating the annual training conference of the BSF.

BSF has already made it clear that it was difficult to check infiltration along the 4,086-km long because of the terrain.

“It is not possible to totally seal the (Indo-Bangla) border because the terrain is such... some kind of porocity will always be there,” BSF Director General A K Mitra said.

Reacting to reports that Pak-based terrorists generally use the Indo-Bangla border to enter the country and such was the case in the Mumbai blasts also, Mitra said “I read such reports in newspapers everyday that they came from Bangladesh, but nobody has ever said that I came through this part or this area.”

He said Bangladeshis can also enter the country using valid documents. “They come through Petrapol and Benapol and do not go back. There are at least 1.5 lakh who have come on valid documents and have not gone back,” he added.

Elaborating the hardships faced by border guards, Mitra said Indo-Bangla border was “peculiar” as it disects rivers, hills and even houses and to complicate the situation further Bangladesh acts as a breeding ground for terror groups.

Apart from the Pakistan-based outfits and the ISI, there were two groups in the ruling party which were associated with fundamentalist groups. “All these groups together try to export people” into India, Mitra said.

The Director General also expressed concern over recent attempts by Pakistan-based terrorists to enter the country through low-key Rajasthan and Punjab sectors.

“There have been no reports of infiltration along the Indo-Pak borders in Punjab and Rajasthan in the last ten years. Recently there were two attempts and this is a matter of concern for us and we are taking it seriously,” Mitra said.

He said it was not clear yet whether the infiltration bids by Laskher-e-Toiba militants were one-off incidents or it was the beginning of a trend.

Mitra was referring to the killing of three terrorists by BSF personnel in Rajasthan and the gunning down of one Lashkar militant in Punjab last month.

Subject: Sharmila firm on continuing fast , Armed Forces Special Powers Act

Sharmila firm on continuing fast
  From Our Spl Correspondent
   NEW DELHI, Oct 6 –

The possibility of the Centre detaining Sharmila Irom loomed large today, with the bleary-eyed agitator ruling out any possibility of leaving the Capital without fulfilling her objective of having the dreaded Armed Forces Special Powers Act repealed. In a day of fast-paced development, that saw Manipur Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh rushing to Delhi to meet Central leaders, Sharmila upped the ante by her assertion of not willing to make any compromises.

The Manipur Chief Minister met Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil to discuss the crisis. Later a delegation of Apunba Lup, an apex body of 32 civil society groups besides representatives of various other bodies also met the Union Home Minister to press for repeal of the Act. The delegation also had a meeting with the Chief Minister, where they submitted a letter written by Sharmila.

The Centre has come under renewed pressure to act, as media glare turned on Sharmila, who has been fasting since November 2000. The place, where she stationed herself at Jantar Mantar, is being thronged by people, NGOs, international human rights groups, media. Leader of JKLF Yasin Malik visited her to express their solidarity with her agitation.

All this has put the Centre in a tight spot, and sources in the MHA said that under the circumstances they have very little choice other than to detain her. What has the cops worried was also the fact that Sharmila has taken out the nasal pipe and has not even taken a sip of water.

Talking to newsmen today in a feeble voice, she said that she cannot remain silent when an Act is used to allow killing of one person by another. “My whole effort has been to ensure and save loss of life,” she said.

“I am unhappy over the ways political leaders have responded. I would prefer them to respond in the way they would respond to their daughter and not use the stick,” Sharmila said.

She also took pains to talk about the prevailing situation in Manipur. “The land I come from is plagued with layers and layers of problems with very few means of livelihood,” she explained.

Reiterating her resolve, she said that the chances of leading a decent life are fast getting eroded. “I don’t want the government to incur expenses to keep me alive.

“There is no question of going back without fulfilling the objectives. “I am hopeful and positive that I will succeed,” she said.
