‘B’desh a launch  pad for terrorists’

BANGALORE, Oct 19: Bangladesh has emerged as a launch pad into India for Pakistan-based terror groups like the Lashker-e-Taiba, and Dhaka is not cooperating with New Delhi in cracking down on them, National Security Advisor M K Narayanan said today. Responding to questions from media, Narayanan said Bangladesh is a sanctuary and a launch pad into India for terrorist groups like the LeT. Most leaders of militant and underground outfits operating in the north-eastern States like Manipur are in Bangladesh, he told reporters at an interaction here with police officials from Karnataka. “We regard Bangladesh as an area which gives sanctuary to these (leaders of militant groups). We have been in touch with the Bangladesh Government,” Narayanan said. “I don’t think the cooperation (from Dhaka) as we like is forthcoming as it should be. But that’s something we will continue to press.” On Pakistan not handing over terrorists wanted in India and the way forward, Narayanan said: “Obviously, they will not come (Pakistan would not hand them over).” But he added, “That’s part of the dialogue and that will continue.” Earlier, he gave a perspective on the national security scenario at the interactive session. Senior police officials from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh also attended the two-and-half-hour session. Asked about possible terror attacks in retaliation to the possible execution of Mohammed Afzal Guru, sentenced to death for his role in the 2001 attack on Parliament, Narayanan said: “There is a Supreme Court verdict and I suppose the law of the land prevails.” He indicated the Union Government was undeterred by such threats. Pointing towards BS Sial, who was sitting next to him, Narayanan said the Karnataka Police chief could not say he will not act because somebody holds out a threat. PTI

Attack On India's Parliament:Last Chance To Know What Really Happened
By Nirmalangshu Mukherji

http://www.countercurrents.org/hr-mukherji201006.htm

The attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001 was a major event in contemporary India. As the judicial procedure into this case nears its end, with Mohammed Afzal to be hanged on October 20, our effort to get at the truth as to what really happened is about to be scuttled. Who attacked Parliament and what was the conspiracy? On what basis did the NDA government take the country close to a
nuclear war? What was the role of the State Task Force (J and K) on surrendered militants? What was the role of the Special Cell of Delhi Police in conducting the case?

There are many reasons therefore for commuting Afzal's death penalty. But given the charged opinions on this issue and with the BJP threatening to make this a national issue, I doubt that this government would have the courage to decide this matter on rational and relevant considerations

Bangladeshi labor migrants, locally known as "Orang Bangla" albeit in a derogatory sense, continue to serve Malaysia to perpetuate its status as an "economic tiger" in Asia

There is no point of abolishing capital
punishment-----------------from our legal system---
whenever there is a capital punishment we start to
yalk about its validity---

If we look at the other side of this --then you would
probably realise why do we need that.

For example say his capital punishment has been
changed with life imprisonment-- do we think this
terrorist will learn the lesson--they would try to
hijack a plan to release those people as it happened
earlier-- we thereby not giving them that punishment
just putting the life of our people in risk-- do you
ever think about that-- if the terrorist don;t think
about killing the innocent people just because they
can not fight with our soldiers-- why should we escape
from hitting them with their weapon--- Afzal is
reasponsible for all shorts of mishape--- if he did
not think of the consequence about what he would have
to face if got caught, what would happen to his
family-then why should we take that responsibility--
if he is guilty then he have to face theb music-- now
you may ask whether he is really guilty or not that is
different issue honarble Supreme Coart can restart the
judicial matter reopenung his case-- but if he find
guilty then he deserve that punishment

Irom Sharmila: 'Iron Lady' Of Manipur By Subhash Gatade

*Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head, Pretending he just doesn't see ? -Bob Dylan*

*Irom Sharmila.*(Age 34). Does that name sound familiar?

Well, like most of us this youngest daughter of Irom Nanda and Irom Sakhi Devi has many identities. For sister Vijayanti or brother Singhajit she is their dearest sister who had the 'never say die' spirit ingrained in her since childhood. For some of her dear friends she is an Yoga enthusiast who at times also dabbled in naturopathy. For litterateurs of Manipur, she is a budding poetess who has written hundreds of poems but till date only one of her collections 'Imadi Khongdai Setlaroi' has been published. And for the vast majority of Manipuris, she is not Irom Sharmila Thanu rather she is the 'Iron Lady of Manipur' who has challenged a callous and apathetic government and its regime of draconian law with her unique struggle.

Interestingly, despite plethora of TV channels and a boom in the print media, not many of us from 'mainland' India would be able to tell what made this young girl from a lower middle class family who could not even continue her education after 12 th, a legend in her own lifetime.

It is difficult to believe the saga of struggle of Irom Sharmila Thanu

In fact it will be nearly six years that she would be on her hunger strike. She has remained without solid food since then, demanding withdrawal from her state, of one of the most draconian laws in the statue books called Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

At present she is lodged in AIIMS, New Delhi where she is being 'nasal fed' by a team of doctors.
