Sharmila’s struggle in film festival
OUR CORRESPONDENT              Protest icon: Irom Sharmila   Imphal, Oct. 23:

In a show of solidarity with Irom Sharmila’s six-year-old fast, a Geneva-based rights group, Sangat South Asia, along with two human rights groups of the Northeast, is organising a documentary film festival to showcase the struggle of women in conflict areas. The film festival will be held here for three days, beginning October 31. Announcing this here today, Babloo Loitongbam, executive director of Human Rights Alert, said at least six films documenting the lives of women peace workers whose names were recommended for Nobel Peace prize by Sangat South Asia last year were likely to be screened during the festival.

The festival is being organised at the Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy, Imphal, with help from Human Rights Alert and Shillong-based North East Network to show solidarity with Irom Sharmila and also to mark the completion of six years of her fast. Sharmila, who is now at AIIMS, Delhi, began her hungerstrike on November 2, 2000, demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, that gives sweeping powers to armed forces during counter-insurgency operations. Her hungerstrike was triggered by the killing of 10 civilians by Assam Rifles troops at Malom of Imphal following an ambush by militants. Loitongbam said a film based on Sharmila and the struggle of Manipuri women against atrocities by security forces would be screened on the concluding day of the festival.

Sharmila was one of the 1,000 women from different countries recommended by Sangat South Asia for the Nobel Peace prize. The festival will open with films on struggle for peace by women in Kashmir and Gujarat. On the concluding day, a photo exhibition concerning Sharmila’s struggle would be organised. Loitongbam said some of the 1,000 nominated women were likely to attend the programme here. Representatives of the Geneva-based group are also expected to attend the programme.

The film festival will be followed by the release of an audio cassette featuring songs written by Sharmila and a collection of poems by her. In a related development, Human Rights Alert released the report of the Justice B. P. Reddy committee, which recommended repeal of the army act after incorporating the provisions in the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in the form of a book. The 147-page report is yet to be made public by the Centre.

Equity culture

A typical resident of the North-east is not much bothered about these happenings at Bombay or National Stock Exchange, although this is changing slowly. The news pages dealing with stocks are usually not seen or read. Even highly placed people are not aware of the meaning of terms such as market capitalisation or derivatives.

   THEY DON'T NEED NO EDUCATION?
In Bihar's Kalyanpatti village, dalit children are not just ostracised but
even barred from school.

Kalyanpatti (Bihar):* Caste conflict continues to create divisions in Bihar's Kalyanpatti village where dalit children are being deprived of education because of caste prejudice. They are enrolled in school, but none of them have attended classes for the past two years.

"We went to school. But they beat us and asked us to leave," dalit student Prabhash Kumar said.

There is only one government school in Kalyanpatti, which was earlier situated in a dalit colony but was moved to an upper caste area two years ago. Since then, dalit children have been barred from entering the school premises.

"It's difficult for dalit students to study here. Teachers beat them and send them away," said dalit villager Nandlal.

And shockingly, the upper caste people of the village openly threaten to murder dalits if they try to move the school. "There will be a blood bath if they ask us to move the school," upper caste villager Arun Kumar, said.

Even the teachers are shying away from this caste tussle. Instead, they give other reasons to justify Dalit childrens' absence. "If we don't care for upper caste students, they won't come to school. So we have to pay more attention to them," Yogendra Yadav Teacher

In an era of sprawling shopping malls and four lane highways, this is a shocking reality, which continues to exist. There have been several cases of caste prejudice in Bihar, and this just one of them. But the state administration simply continues to turn a blind eye.
