Irom Sharmila has no plans to end fast against anti-terror law

NEW DELHI, Nov 5 ??“ Irom Sharmila Chanu, whose hunger strike to demand the repeal of a controversial anti- terror law has entered its seventh year, has said she intends to continue her protest till the legislation is withdrawn.

Sharmila, who shifted her protest to the national capital last month, said, ???There is no question of my ending the fast. The government will have to scrap the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. It is the most draconian law in India.???

The 36-year-old Manipuri woman began her protest in Imphal on November 2, 2000 soon after Assam Rifles personnel shot dead 10 people there. The AFSPA gives sweeping powers to security forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations.

Sharmila was arrested four days after her arrival here to continue her fast in the capital to draw the nation??™s attention. In Manipur, she was arrested several times under various laws related to attempted suicide and threat to national security.

???They slapped on me a particular section of CrPC, considering my presence in Delhi as a threat to the lives of the President, Prime Minister and Chief Minister of Manipur,??? Sharmila told PTI, lying in a hospital bed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here.

???Tell me how an unarmed, weak woman can be a threat to such dignitaries.???

Sharmila has been force-fed a cocktail of vitamins, minerals, laxatives, protein supplements and lentil soup through the nose with a rubber tube. Sharmila wrote a letter to the United Nations yesterday about her protest and the government??™s alleged failure to take a decision on the continuation of the AFSPA.

Asked whether she got any assurance from the government regarding the repeal of the controversial law, she said Union Minister Oscar Fernandes met her at AIIMS on October 20 and assured action on the act before the winter session of Parliament.

???Parliament will start its sitting on November 22, and I am yet to hear from the government,??? said Sharmila, who does yoga for about four hours and takes an hour-long stroll every day.

Asked about the government??™s reported move to shift her back to Manipur from New Delhi, Sharmila said, ???If the reports are true it is unfortunate.

???I am not interested in going back to Manipur unless the act is repealed.??? ??“PTI

Karl Rove's Last-Minute "Robocalling" Tactic To Steal The Election

By Bernard Weiner

http://www.countercurrents.org/us-weiner071106.htm

We all waited for Karl Rove's "October Surprise," but it turns out he saved it for the final 72 hours before Election Day. It's been termed "robocalling," and Democratic and swing voters urgently need to hear about it in these last moments before voting.

In various key states and districts, Republicans have initiated this dirty "robocalling" trick. Here, based on preliminary reporting coming in -- and Josh Marshall's website (www. talkingpointsmemo. com) is right on it -- is how it works:

On an automatic-redial system, registered Democrats are called again and again and again and again, at any time during the day or night, to hear what appears to be a message from the Democratic Party in support of the local Democratic Senate or House candidate. The object is to harass and annoy the hell out of these voters, to the point that they'll take out their anger on the Democratic candidate by not voting for him or her, or maybe deciding not to vote in the election at all.

In other words, yet another version of voter suppression in tight races, reminiscent of what Republican operatives (with ties to the White House) were convincted of in New Hampshire last year. In that case, involving the 2002 Senate election, the Republicans automatic-redialed the Democratic Party headquarters' phone lines in the final days before the election so that the Dems' get-out-the-vote campaign was totally jammed and rendered useless. The GOP candidate won the election.
