*On Fundraising*

Fund-raising for child endeavors is very easy. However, funding for 16-18 year olds is a different ball game altogether. Such efforts are questioned and doubted. We too, were asked to change the name of our project such that it would use the word "children" not "youth." Since we were unwilling to do so, fund-raising became all the more difficult. In truth, we were paving the way for a change of mindset. I believe we were the first organization that received a UNICEF donation for a youth camp. For us, this represented a major breakthrough.

Communal harmony to the fore at Muslim saint's Urs

Aligarh, Dec 18: Irrespective of one's individual
faith, devotees recently gathered at the Dargah of
Baba Barchi Bahadur in Aligarh for the annual Urs of
this Muslim saint.

Cutting across religious identities, the devotees come
here out of reverence with the belief that their
wishes are fulfilled by the prayers at the Dargah
(tomb) of Baba Barchi. The tomb is 600 years old.

"Baba Barchi fulfills the wishes of all those who come
here with a good heart," said Jagat Singh, a devotee.

The devotees tie a thread and make a wish.

"When we came here for the first time and wished for a
baby boy, I was blessed with twin boys. And then we
wished for the marriage of our child which was also
fulfilled," said Sapna, another devotee.

'Qawwali' or devotional music is sung on this
occasion.

"People of all religions and beliefs come here. There
are no differences here," said Ahmed Farid, another
devotee.

Locals recall that during the British rule while
laying a railway track, the Dargah came in the way.
The engineers wished to demolish the Dargah which
resulted in complications and the work could not
proceed. Ultimately, the track was removed from the
place and diverted without disturning the tomb. Even
today, the train crew slows down while passing by the
Dargah to pay their obeisances.

The word Urs, derived from the Arabic language, marks
the death anniversary of a saint and is usually
observed at his Dargah or place of burial.

Subject: SEZ: Some Facts and Web Resources

SEZs Facts and Web   Resources
     What is SEZ ?

A Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a   geographical region that has
economic laws different from a country`s   typical economic laws
to increase foreign investment. Special Economic Zones   have
been established in several countries, including the People`s
Republic of China, Jordan, Poland, Kazakhstan, the Philippines
and   Russia. North Korea has also attempted this to a degree.

     SEZs in India

The Government of India introduced   a policy in the year 2000
for setting up of Special Economic Zones in the   country with
a view to provide an internationally competitive and   hassle
free environment for exports. Units may be set up in SEZ   for
manufacture of goods and rendering of services. The units in
the Zone   have to be a net foreign exchange earner but they
shall not be subjected to   any pre-determined value addition
or minimum export performance requirements.   Sales in the
Domestic Tariff Area by SEZ units shall be subject to   payment
of full Custom Duty and import policy in force.
The policy   provides for setting up of SEZ`s in the public,
private, joint sector or by   State Governments. It was also
envisaged that some of the existing Export   Processing Zones
would be converted into Special Economic Zones. Till now,   a
number of Export Processing Zones located at Kandla and
Surat (Gujarat),   Cochin (Kerala), Santa Cruz (Mumbai-
Maharashtra) , Falta (West Bengal),   Madras (Tamil Nadu),
Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Noida (Uttar   Pradesh)
have been converted into Special Economic Zones.

     Features of SEZs in India
The   zones are proposed to be setup by private sector or by
state government in   association with private sector. Private
sector is also invited to develop   infrastructure facilities in
the existing SEZs

State Government plays a lead role   in the setting up of SEZ.
A framework is being developed by creating special   windows
under existing rules and regulations of the Central and   state
governments for SEZ.

Goa witnessed communal violence in 2006

Rupesh Samant, Panaji, Dec 19: Goa's reputation as a
place of total peace took a knock in 2006 as the state
saw unprecedented communal violence and came under the
shadow of terror attack threats.

Alleged threats by Lashkar-e-Toiba and al-Qaeda
militant outfits to strike coupled with the arrest of
a terrorist in the state carrying explosives
heightened the security scare.

But the communal violence came as the most shocking
incident.

Sanvordem and Curchorem, twin-towns, witnessed
communal violence and tension for almost three days
beginning from March three. The divide was clear --
minority versus majority.

What sparked the violence was a tiny structure
illegally constructed on a piece of land at Guddemol
locality adjacent to Sanvordem town and used as a
madrassa. A few people razed the structure which
fuelled tension.

The morcha protesting the demolition turned violent.
It was begining of the three-day clashes that charred
down property worth crores. Houses, shops, vehicles
and police station were attacked in the rioting.

It was a rude shock for the Goans who had till then
just heard or read about communal violence.

Goans were about to put back sad memories of
Sanvordem-Curchorem incident when a Kashmiri militant
was arrested at margao in south Goa. Armed with
explosives, police said, he had aimed to target vital
installations in the state.

Mid of this year, Goa got intelligence inputs saying
the state is on terrorist's target. For last two
months, general security alerts have become order of
the day in the state which has received a large number
of tourists. The security at the airport, vital
installations like oil terminals, railway stations,
bus stands, and the state secretariat remain tight.

For the international film festival of India, walking
through metal detector and getting frisked became
routine.

Police say the security will remain tight till the
tourist season continues.
