But I guess the US Congress cannot beat the record of Pakistan Parliamentarians in floor crossing, corruption and beating the desk and making noise in the Parliament instead of laws. Picture by Eastern Projections Guwahati, Jan. 8: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) fears that the “vacuum” created by fleeing migrant workers will be filled by the very illegal migrants from Bangladesh whom the vast majority wants out. “We are unsure about the motive behind the carnage but we definitely feel that illegal migrants from Bangladesh will take advantage of the situation. They will seize the employment opportunities created by the exodus of Hindi-speaking labourers from the state,” AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya told the media today. The AASU and Ulfa have had different views on the issue of “illegal migration”. The student organisation has been critical of the militant group’s silence on the influx of migrants from Bangladesh. Ulfa did issue a statement recently, but not in favour of AASU’s stand. It said those who had entered Assam from “mainland India” were illegal migrants, too. With the Tarun Gogoi government today admitting to an exodus of Hindi-speaking people, the AASU was quick to pounce on an issue close to its heart. The student organisation appealed to Hindi-speaking residents of Assam to be calm and not pack their bags for good. “In this hour of crisis, we appeal to all sections of the people to exercise maximum restraint so that people with vested interests do not take advantage of the situation,” Bhattacharyya said. The AASU also issued a joint statement with the Purbottar Hindustani Sanmelan, condemning the killings since Friday night. Activists of both organisations will hold sit-in demonstrations, wearing black masks, throughout the state on January 11. A hungerstrike in front of Raj Bhavan has been planned from 9 am to 4 pm the next day. Blaming Dispur for the insecurity of Hindi-speaking people, Bhattacharyya said the government had failed its citizens. “There is no sign of a government in the state.” AASU president Sankar Prasad Ray said the killings were the handiwork of forces “desperate to create a rift between the Assamese and Hindi-speaking people”. His counterpart in the Purbottar Hindustani Sanmelan, Y. L. Karna, said he had already spoken to the chief ministers of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi to ensure the safety of people from Assam in these states. A dozen political parties organised a march in the state capital and the BJP held a sit-in demonstration in front of Raj Bhavan during the day. The ruling Congress, too, observed a day of mourning by holding condolence meetings throughout the state for the victims in the Ulfa-orchestrated carnage. The AGP is planning a demonstration on Thursday. Thousands of people participated in the protest march organised by 12 parties, led by the Assam United Democratic Front and the AGP (Pragatisheel). ------------ [3] From: ram prasad <tnordramprasad@yahoo.co.in> Date: Tue Jan 9, 2007 Subject: Re: [issuesonline_worldwide] Re: News@HindustanTimes.com Dear Katyalji, Dhumakot Sangliya project is a research and development project. We are trying to get the lens project included in the state five year plan. Lens project is the main activity to demonstrate what technological nursery is and how to organise it. The cost of the projected lens nursery is around Rs 2 crores. But we have a plan to raise around Rs 10 crores to raise cottage and small industries for employing school drop outs. NRIs are to be requested to make their contribution in the form of donations directly or through foundations already working for eradicating poverty. NET News Network Guwahati, Jan 9: Former Defence Minister and Janata Dal (U) leader George Fernandez in an initiative to break the stalemate between ULFA and Government today met some of the senior leaders of the outfit languishing in the Guwahati jail. Outfit’s vice-Chairman Pradip Gogoi along with four other leaders Pronoti Deka, Ramu Mech and Bhimkanta Buragohain who met Fernandez reportedly wished him to become the mediator and take forward the peace process which faced roadblock over the issue of release of jailed outfit leaders. Fernandez while informing this during an interaction with the waiting media persons outside the jail further added that jailed leaders are feeling betrayed by the Union government after the roadblock in the peace initiative. Fernandez when asked about his stand on the offer of mediator said that being a former defence minister he is quite comfortable with the offer and ready to travel anywhere to make the responsibility a success. Fernandez has rushed to the state after ULFA militants went on a rampage killing more than 63 Hindi speaking workers in upper Assam since Friday evening. ------------ [5] From: Pradip Kumar Datta <pradip200@yahoo.com> Date: Tue Jan 9, 2007 Subject: ISI behind recent killings: Assam Chief Minister ISI behind recent killings: Assam Chief Minister NET News Network Tinsukia (Assam): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today held ISI responsible for instigating ULFA in carrying out present carnage against Hindi speaking people in the state. Gogoi who visited the trouble torn Tinsukia district for the first time after the killing of more than 63 people assured people that government will extend all possible help to the dislodged people. Meanwhile, army is raiding separatist bases in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh looking for rebels, officials said on Tuesday. Defence Minister A K Antony and Army Chief General J J Singh will arrive in Assam later on Tuesday to review the security situation at an army base in the northern garrison town of Tezpur. "There have been no more overnight incidents of attacks reported so far," Assam government spokesperson Himanta Biswa Sarma said. "Security forces have fanned out across the state with a high-security alert already sounded to bring the situation under control," said Sarma. Five districts of Arunachal Pradesh share common borders with Assam; intelligence reports indicate that the ULFA is using at least three districts in the region as bases. The security operation is mainly confined to the extremely hostile and thickly wooded terrain in Tirap, Changlang and Lohit districts of Arunachal Pradesh. Migrant workers have started fleeing Assam fearing more attacks even as authorities in Assam herded hundreds of migrant workers in government-run shelters for security reasons. Akhil Assam Bhojpuri Yuba Chatra Parishad has called for a 12 hour Assam Bandh on January 10 protesting against the recent killings. ----------- |
