Gujarat riots: US delegation concerned over delayed justic

Ahmedabad, January 10

A US Congressional delegation, which visited some sites of post-Godhra anti-minority pogrom here on Friday, expressed concern over the loss of human rights and delay in prosecution of the guilty.

The four-member US delegation — led by Joseph Pitts, vice-chairman of the Congress sub-committee on terrorism, rights and non-proliferation — also visited the massacre site in the Gulbarg Society where former MP Ehsan Jaffrey was killed.

Addressing mediapersons after interacting with riot victims, Pitts said back home they would report on the anti-conversion laws, status of Dalits and the anti-minority violence. Their report would serve as background papers for American foreign policy.

In a statement, the delegates observed that most rioters and killers were still at large. It also expressed concern that the Saarc summit did not address the issue of safety of minorities and religious freedom in the sub-continent.

However, Pitts hailed Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee for his "great leadership in efforts of reconciliation with Pakistan".

Earlier, the US team visited a riot rehabilitation site at Ramol and handed over keys of newly-built houses to the riot victims. Steve Chabbort, a delegation member who had also visited strife-torn Rwanda as part of another delegation, said the massacre at the Gulbarg Society was probably more gruesome than in the African nation.

The US team's visit coincided with a seminar held jointly by the All-India Christian Council, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and the Confederation of SC/ST Organisations, which observed that anti-minority policies were being institutionalised.
