[1] Muslims Forcing Christian in Baghdad Neighborhood to Pay 'Protection Tax' Baghdad (AINA) -- Muslims in the Dora neighborhood of Iraq are forcing Assyrians (also known as Chaldeans and Syriacs) to pay the jizya, the poll tax demanded by the Koran which all Christians and Jews must pay in exchange for being allowed to live and practice their faith as well as being entitled to 'Muslim protection' from outside aggression. At least two cases have been reported to a government employee -- who wishes to remain anonymous -- in which the Christian Assyrian wives were instructed to go to a certain mosque and pay, which they did out of fear. The stated reason for the payment was "we do the fighting and you pay to support." The jizya has been collected since the arrival of Islam in 630 A.D. The last systematic collection was by the Ottomans (Turks), which came to an end only in 1918, when the Ottoman empire was defeated and partitioned in World War One. ------------- [2] From: Pradip Kumar Datta <pradip200@yahoo.com> Date: Wed Mar 21, 2007 Subject: 5,000 militants active in Bangladesh '5,000 militants active in Bangladesh' DHAKA: As Bangladesh prepares to hang six militants convicted of masterminding fatal bombings, a close associate arrested last week said about 5,000 members of banned Islamist groups were still active in the country. Mostafizur Rahman Shahin, detained in northern district Pabna on March 14, gave the information under interrogation by security and intelligence agencies, police said on Wednesday. Shahin confessed to being a senior member of the outlawed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, led by Shayek Abdur Rahman. Another banned militant group active in Bangladesh is Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh, headed by Siddikul Islam Bangla Bhai. Both Bangla Bhai and Shayek, along with four other Islamist militants, are likely to be executed within weeks, police said. They were sentenced to death last year for masterminding countrywide bomb attacks in late 2005, which killed at least 30 people. The victims included judges, lawyers and police. The Islamists are fighting to introduce sharia law in mainly Muslim Bangladesh, and threatened to strike again even if their leaders were hanged, police said. Police said security was tightened around the country of more than 140 million in view of the threat, but gave no details. Bangladesh's army-backed interim government, headed by former central bank chief Fakhruddin Ahmed, is planning to enact a law to ban any group linked to Islamist militants or other terror groups. Shahin told interrogators Islamist militants in Bangladesh received money from sources overseas, including in the United States and Saudi Arabia, police said. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1788338.cms?ticker=1 ------- [3] Wilberforce and the Caste system by Joseph D’souza, International President, Dalit Freedom Network and President, All India Christian Council The West is commemorating the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade law that began the process of dismantling slavery in the modern world. William Wilberforce a parliamentarian, a friend of the then Prime Minister Pitt and a Christian human rights activist led the struggle against slavery in the British Parliament all his life. The new film ‘Amazing Grace’ is being released on March 23rd in London, which marks the 200th year of the abolition of the slave trade in the British empire. Did Wilberforce have anything to say on caste discrimination and Dalits? Yes, he spoke on the caste system and untouchability in the British Parliament 200 years ago and described caste discrimination against Dalits as akin to slavery. Speaking on the caste system, he said, ‘The institution of caste is a system at war with truth and nature’. If Wilberforce were alive today he would describe Dalits as modern slavery’s biggest challenge. It is not enough for us to hide behind the statements that we have all kinds of laws against discrimination of Dalits. Caste discrimination is a mindset, a worldview of fellow human beings and what family and society constructs for us as we grow up as children. If children are constantly told about their ‘jat’(caste), if popular bollywood movies talk about ‘jat’and if cultural events are built around people of certain ‘jatis’( castes) then caste slavery will not vanish. Bonded child labourers, girl trafficking, and 100000 cases of atrocities against Dalits is a symptom of the problem but not the disease. The disease is the caste system. The upper castes hypocritically are quick to raise the issue of racism, take for example the recent TV episode connected with Shilpa Shetty in UK, but so blind about the blatant racism against the Dalits within our own nation. The question has to be asked, ‘Why is it that the upper castes have not led a movement for the abolishing of the caste system for 3000 years when the disastrous effect on national development, unity, progress and economy due to caste discrimination is plain?’ If Wilberforce were alive today he would be leading a global campaign to abolish the caste system. What are you doing about this? http://www.dalitnetwork.org/go?/dfn/blog/wilberforce_and_the_caste_system/ --------- [4] From: syed rahman <surahman2000@yahoo.com> Date: Wed Mar 21, 2007 Subject: Rahul's controversy-charisma mix might just work Rahul's controversy-charisma mix might just work http://www.khabrein.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1047&Itemid=5\ 8 Rahul lands in controversyMuzaffarnagar, March 21: Oodles of charisma, some charm and a dash of controversy, Rahul Gandhi got the recipe just right when he made a three-day road trip through western Uttar Pradesh to boost the Congress' chances in the elections beginning April 7. With the Gandhi-Nehru halo firmly around his head, Rahul wowed locals, who turned up in their thousands to see the Congress star in Bareilly, Muradnagar, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Deoband. Whether the stardom translates into votes in the state is still to be seen, but he also managed to unnerve his political adversaries. In the third year of his entry into politics, Rahul has learnt the tricks of the trade -- fully utilise personal charisma to build direct rapport with the masses and make carefully worded statements aimed at newspaper headlines, but in his trademark earnest, non-aggressive style without naming anybody.
