Jhabua still tense; 8 towns observe bandh

Ranjan
Jhabua, January 17

Even as Jhabua continues to remain tense, police arrested
as many as 13 persons related to Amkhut Catholic Church
and School, including the head Church priest, in connection
with the armed attack on a group last evening, which
resulted in the death of one Arjun Pal and causing injuries to
six others.

Meanwhile, the government has announced a sum of Rs 1 lakh
to the next of kin of Arjun Pal and a sum of Rs 5,000 to each
of the injured in the Amkhut incident.

No other untoward incident was reported from any part of the
district after the violent incidents which tool place at Amkhut,
Puniyavat and Alirajpur. Prohibitory orders were issued late
night under Section 144 of Cr PC in the entire district.

Today, a spontaneous bandh was observed in eight towns in the
district, including Bhabra and Alirajpur. Heavy police force was
deployed at a good number of sensitive places in the district to
meet any eventuality.

The arrested persons included Fr Theofil, Nirma Damor, Emanuel,
Kiran Julios, Rupesh Tomar, Mrs Angina, Mansingh, Rajendra,
Deepu and Isha.

The Catholic Church premises where Sujata was raped and
murdered sees no presence of Church priests. The premises
wore a deserted look and was converted into a veritable police
camp.

The cremation of Arjun Pal, said to be a Sewa Bharati worker,
took place at Bhabra amidst heavy police deployment and
presence of hundreds of persons. Industries Minister Kailash
Chawla and PWD Minister Kailash Vijayavergiya also attended
the funeral procession this afternoon.

IG Indore Range PL Pandey countered unconfirmed reports
from certain quarters that three persons had been killed in
Amkhut incident last evening. He said, so far there was report
of death of one person only.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad, continuing its dharna programme
opposite the Catholic Church and School in Jhabua city, has
issued a warning that if the real culprits involved in rape and
murder of nine-year old Sujata were not arrested by January
19 they would chalk out their own course of action. Notably,
the rape and murder of the girl was committed in the Church
premises.

Talking to Hindustan Times, VHP district president Khumsingh
Maharaj said, the demands of the organisations were that the
government appeal against the court case in connection with
Nawapada nun rape case, the Churches and the Church priests
be removed from the district and the real culprits involved in
rape and murder of Sujata be arrested.
