[1] 3 WOMEN RELEASED IN PAKISTAN AFTER FORCED CONFESSION Source: Assist News Service Three women accused of being prostitutes who were snatched from their home and imprisoned inside an Islamic fundamentalist school in Islamabad, Pakistan, were released after being forced to “confess” their sins. The U.K.-based newspaper, The Guardian, reported that one of the three women, Shamim, who was also said to run a brothel, said at a press conference, “I apologize for my past acts and promise that in future I will live like a pious person.” After Shamim was released, she said she had only given the statement under duress. “I could only escape after telling reporters what they wanted me to say. Otherwise there seemed to be no power in the world, including President [Pervez] Musharraf, who could free us,” she said. Police appeared helpless to save Shamim, her daughter, daughter-in-law and 6-month-old granddaughter after they were snatched from their home and imprisoned inside Jamia Hafsa under guard by thousands of burka-clad women clutching bamboo staves. Critics claim the Muslim’s “anti-vice campaign” highlighted how little control Musharraf had over radical Islamic seminaries. “The ill wind of religious extremism, confined no longer to some forgotten nook, is threatening to rend the very fabric of society as we know it,” reported the Pakistan English daily newspaper, Dawn. ----------- [2] From: Abhiyya 2006 <abhiyya@yahoo.com> Date: Wed Apr 4, 2007 Subject: Documentary film on Madani released Documentary film on Madhani released Tuesday April 3 2007 02:29 IST http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IE920070402160738&Topic=0&Title=Chen\ nai&Page=9 CHENNAI: A documentary film on Abdul Nazar Madhani, leader of People’s Democratic Party, who has been imprisoned in Coimbatore Central Jail for over nine years in the serial blasts case, was released here on Sunday. The 45-minute film is directed by Aloor Shanavaas, an upcoming documentary film maker. Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary S Hyder Ali released the cassette of the film and it was received by Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi president Thol Thirumavalan. Speaking on the occasion, Thirumavalavan said the prolonged incarceration of Madhani and 165 other Muslims in connection with the Coimbatore bomb blasts case without bail, was totally unjust and condemnable. He urged the Dalits and minorities to unite and emerge as an alternative political force to defeat state terrorism perpetrated against them. The 166 accused, even if they have been convicted for the alleged offence, could have been released by now, Thirumavalavan added. In his speech, professor A Marx said the DMK Government should take steps soon to enable the accused persons to come out on bail. At least 100 among the 166 were innocent, he added. Marx also urged Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to withdraw a government order issued during the previous AIADMK regime prohibiting Madhani from being transferred to any other prison. Astonishingly, there was, among many Western "progressives," a vocal dislike for the title. It is a false premise, these critics protested. They ignored Mr. Lewis's implicit statement that things have been, or could be, right. But indeed, there is much that is clearly wrong with the Islamic world. Women are stoned to death and undergo clitorectomies. Gays hang from the gallows under the approving eyes of the proponents of Shariah, the legal code of Islam. Sunni and Shia massacre each other daily in Iraq. Palestinian mothers teach 3-year-old boys and girls the ideal of martyrdom. One would expect the orthodox Islamic establishment to evade or dismiss these complaints, but less happily, the non-Muslim priests of enlightenment in the West have come, actively and passively, to the Islamists' defense. ---------- [4] From: Mujeebulla Chemnad <kvchemnad@yahoo.com> Date: Wed Apr 4, 2007 Subject: Re: Lalu Is Regarded As Smartest Minister By Management Experts since he could loot illerate, ignorant public without thier knowing about it. when was platform ticket available for 50 paise? jitu11in@yahoo.com wrote: hi all, smart lalu, though Superficially no fares were increased, but there r many hidden ways by which passengers r charges exorbitantly., after all its common sense, from where all this profits r coming from. ------------- [5] From: Regi P George <george_regi@yahoo.com> Cc: indiathinkersnet @ yahoogroups.com Date: Wed Apr 4, 2007 Subject: Re: [Mahajanapada] Nandigram: Communism as fascism - I Whait is it? In the last two weeks 136,000 people fled their homes to seek protection in refugee camps. Among those displaced were eight Gospel for Asia (GFA) missionaries and at least 83 of their church families. In the last 15 months 4,000 people have died in the conflict between Sri Lanka’s government and the insurgent group, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Civilians are often caught in the crossfire as suicide bombers, mines and mortar bombs are common. “My heart aches for these innocent suffering people,” said GFA President K.P. Yohannan. GFA’s Sri Lanka leader, Lal Vanderwall, says the 83 families and eight pastors who were displaced see this as an opportunity to share the hope they have in Christ with their fellow refugees. While they face the same dangers and discomforts as the others, they trust the Lord to work through the nightmarish situation. The prospects for a peaceful resolution to this situation seem unlikely. Brig. Prasad Samarasing, Sri Lanka’s official government military spokesman, said, “We are left with no option but to intensify our operations to silence their guns.” ------------ [8] From: Sukla Sen <suklasen@yahoo.com> Date: Wed Apr 4, 2007 Subject: Nandigram: CPI (M) Central Committee Unhappy at Loss of Lives! General secretary Prakash Karat briefed the media on the three-day Central Committee meeting that ended on Monday. The committee said that as the right-wing parties, the naxalites and certain non-governmental organisations indulged in "false propaganda" against the CPI (M) on the issue, the party was forced to launch a campaign to counter it. It was unhappy over the loss of lives due to police firing and it noted statements by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee that mistakes were made, Mr. Karat said. He said the manner in which the party workers were driven out from the village and how it lost the support of the people, were areas, which would be gone into by the State Committee. The State Government had wanted a judicial inquiry into the events in Nandigram. However, the Kolkata High Court intervened and ordered a CBI inquiry. Since the matter was still pending before the High Court, the party said after the inquiry, if any police excesses were established, action should be taken. Mr. Karat said the State Government has also ordered a probe by a Divisional Commissioner and after its report, the issue of compensation would also be decided. The committee was of the opinion that the implementation of land reforms and the development of agriculture, laid the foundations for industrialisation. The land use policy adopted by the West Bengal Government should be the basis for conversion of land for non-agricultural purposes.
