Subject: Rahul’s faux pas

Rahul’s faux pas
— Rahul Gandhi, the energetic and young MP has set the Ganges on fire by his whirlwind tour of UP, organising road shows, addressing public meetings bringing life to the moribund UP Congress party and even making inroads to Mulayam’s stronghold which no other Congress leaders have ventured to do so far. However some of his public statements have not only caused embarrassment to the Congress Party and its leadership but also raised diplomatic row. He said that had a Nehru-Gandhi family member remained as the Prime Minister at that time Babri Masjid would not have been allowed to be demolished forgetting for the time being the fact that the then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was a very senior and well respected leader of the Congress party. His another off the cuff remark relates to the contribution of Nehru-Gandhi family for independence of the country. No doubt, Pandit Motilal Nehru and his son Jawahar Lal Nehru played a dominant role in the freedom movement but the freedom struggle was led by Mahatma Gandhi and stalwarts like Abul Kalam Azad, Sardar Patel, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and millions of unkown Satyagrahis gave their full support. Their contribution cannot be ignored. Most damaging of all the statements of Rahul Gandhi which led to caustic comments from Pakistan Foreign Office relates to Nehru-Gandhi family’s contribution in the division of Pakistan with the creation of Bangladesh. Any one with little knowledge of history would have known the circumstances which compelled the then Prime Minister to order army operation to liberate Bangladesh. Rahul’s comment led the Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson to comment that India had always been trying to destabilise Pakistan. Such foot in the mouth comment by Rahul Gandhi at a time when both countries are embarking on a peace process and confidence building measures is not only unwarranted but also shows immaturity of thinking. Like Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi has also gathered round him highly professional corporate executives guiding him in the UP campaign. These professionals may be expert in management, but their knowledge of history needs brushing up.

Can you explain what is this larger national interest?...
Is it something manufacturing Advani, Modi, Subramaniyam Swami etc from the
campus?

Kerala is the only place where students are organised democratically and forcing
the elected govts to change its anti democratic educational policy.

The campus politics has been in very bad shape for quite some time now... Kerala has been seeing this - may be for almost 6 years. Is it not time for this nation to think what is to be done in the larger national interest? I wonder if this is limited only to one party or other???

India Does Not Need SEZs –
The SEZ Act Will Have To Go!
By Dipankar Bhattacharya

Even as the Congress and the CPI(M) and their respective governments in New Delhi and Kolkata are busy covering up the state-sponsored barbarism in Nandigram, the 'empowered group of union ministers' has cleared the deck for the government's SEZ campaign with only a few minor modifications in the SEZ policy

Subject: The criminal elements named SangParivar involved in Human Traffic!

Shocking episode

The news of the attempt by the BJP Member of Parliament, Babu Bhai Katara, to take a woman and teenager to Canada on the passports of his wife and son is shocking (editorial "Katara's human cargo," April 20). It is a shame on our politics and the party to which he belongs. At least now, political parties should think of stricter evaluation while nominating candidates for elections. Sathivel Ilankathir, Thrissur

* * * Mr. Katara's case is yet another hole in the BJP's sinking ship. Besides its being a national shame, the thought that there may be other parliamentarians in the Katara mould sends a shiver down the common man's spine. It is shocking to see people we choose as our representatives strengthening the roots of corruption in all ways possible while living a lavish life off our hard-earned money. Arun Dash, Hyderabad

* * * Mr. Katara's temerity astounds me. How could an MP belonging to a party that has assumed a moral high ground in all things Indian abuse his position thus? Though the BJP has suspended him, it cannot run away from the questions people have on this sordid episode. It only proves that politicians have scant regard for the law of the land. Babu Srinivasan, Eagan, Minnesota

* * * The Katara episode is more proof that criminal elements are getting into our law-making institutions with impunity. They pose a grave threat to not only democracy but our national security. Imagine the international shame the MP would have inflicted on us had he been caught in Canada. The already low credibility of a typical Indian politician will all but vanish if something is not done immediately to stamp out criminalisation of politics. If for no reason other than their own future, it is necessary for those who consider themselves clean to band together to take steps to stop this menace. Air Vice Marshall S. K. Sonpar (retd.), Bangalore
* * * Mr. Katara's arrest reminds us of the quality of the MPs we elect. Lawmakers who are expected to ensure a corruption-free society indulging in such acts makes the people lose faith in democracy. V. Srinivasa Reddy, Nizamabad

* * * One wonders why the immigration officials who were supposed to verify the papers of those leaving the country did not notice such blatant violation. The alert Air India staff who detected the fraud should be commended and rewarded suitably. The Lok Sabha should pass a resolution expelling the MP who has brought shame on himself and the institution he represents. D. B. N. Murthy, Bangalore

* * * The number of legislators charged with serious criminal offences seems to be increasing by the day. The offences they are charged with are also becoming much wider in range — from corruption and electoral malpractices to demanding cash for asking questions in Parliament, harbouring criminals, and human trafficking. The silver lining in the Katara episode is that our administrative machinery still has officials who are unafraid to book the politically powerful. M. H. Rao, Hyderabad

* * * The judicial system will take its own time handing out the verdict. Till then, Mr. Katara will continue to enjoy the powers, privileges, and emoluments of an MP. He may even use his position to influence the trial. Parliament should consider removing him and other members who are facing serious criminal charges in the interest of democracy. S. Nallasivan, Tirunelveli

* * * The sordid act has let our democracy down and showcased the erosion in our politics. It has also revealed what laws mean to our lawmakers. The government is equally to blame for this because it provides a lot of unnecessary privileges to MPs and MLAs. The time is right for a review of their perks. The common man's hard earned money should not be frittered away thus in the name of perks. Shashikant Singh, Roorkee

* * * Our MPs discuss cricket in Parliament when India is reeling under poverty, and they boycott Parliament where people send them to discuss their issues. Their nexus with crime is discussed but they are inducted in the Cabinet on the plea that they are innocent until proved guilty. Deny-justice-by-delaying it is our way of dealing with our representatives. Anil K. Mohapatra, koraput

* * * It is the ill-equipped criminal justice machinery and the high-handed influence of politicians at all possible levels that are the driving force behind such incidents. The need of the hour is the constitution of special courts to handle the trials of politicians-turned-criminals. C. K. Satyaraj, Kochi

* * * Politicians often call for making the legislature more powerful and less answerable to the judiciary. If anything, we should make laws to curtail the powers of the elected representatives in such a way that they have no say in executive and judicial matters; have no power to decide on tenders and execution of projects; and the police, the CBI, and the bureaucracy are free from their control. They should have no criminal record and should have performed a few years of social service; and should face a heavier penalty for any criminal activity they indulge in. R. Vasudevan, Chennai

* * * The Katara affair is a continuum of the cash-for-questions scam originating in the party that professes to be the sole claimant to all nationalist and patriotic traits. Quite a strident chunk of its parivar that arrogates to itself a vanguard role in moral policing appears to coexist with such worthies and elevate them to higher echelons. Should the people not get out of their clutches and strengthen the forces with more transparency and straightforward social concerns? Kasim Sait, Chennai
