Sting operation: Magistrate suspended HT Correspondents New Delhi/Ahmedabad, January 29 The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the CBI to probe the charge that a television journalist succeeded in obtaining warrants against the President, the Chief Justice of India, a sitting Supreme Court judge and a senior lawyer by paying a Gujarat magistrate Rs 40,000. The magistrate, M.S. Brahmbhatt, was suspended by the Gujarat High Court. Acting on a public interest petition filed by the journalist, Vijay Shekhar, a bench comprising Chief Justice V.N. Khare, and Justices S.B. Sinha and S.H. Kapadia asked the investigating agency to submit a report to the court on February 6. The bench passed the order after examining case records brought to it by the Registrar of the Gujarat High Court in response to a direction given by the apex court on Wednesday. The apex court requested Attorney-General Soli J. Sorabjee to be present on February 6, the date of the next hearing, to suggest means of curbing judicial corruption. The Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre, the Gujarat government, the Registrar-General of the Gujarat High Court, Brahmbhatt, the complainant and three lawyers who had helped him. Meanwhile in Ahmedabad, lawyers beat up reporters and cameramen from the electronic media at the Meghaninagar court where Brahmbhatt was posted. The lawyers were reportedly angry that Shekhar's 'sting operation' had exposed the existing bribery racket from which they benefited. http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_553385,0008.htm |
