Subject: Gujju blood

A rich Arab was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai for a heart transplant. Prior to the surgery, the doctors needed to store his blood type in case need arose. As the Arab had a rare type of blood, it couldn't be found locally. So the call went out to a number of countries. Finally a Gujarati was located who had a similar type of blood. The Gujarati willingly donated his blood for the Arab.

After the surgery, the Arab sent the Gujarati in gratitude a new Toyota Prado, diamonds, Lapiz Lazuri jewellery and US$100,000. A year later, the Arab had to undergo corrective surgery. His doctor telephoned the Gujarati, who was more than happy to donate blood again to the Arab. After the corrective surgery, the Arab sent the Gujarati a Thank You card and a jar of Almond halwa sweets. The Gujarati was shocked to see that the second time the Arab did not reciprocate the Gujarati's kind gesture as he had anticipated.

He phoned the Arab and asked him why this time he had sent him only a Thank You card and Almond sweets.

To this, the Arab replied "Bapu..... now I have Gujju blood in my veins."

* * Lucknow: Muslim leaders demanded on Tuesday that UPA-Left coalition replace its presidential nominee Pratibha Patil, after she urged women to stop wearing veils, which she said were introduced to protect women from Muslim invaders centuries ago. Several Muslim leaders called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to find a new candidate for the largely ceremonial post of president, accusing Pratibha Patil of insulting Islam.

The controversy over Patil's remarks erupted even before she filed her nomination for the presidential election, due in July. The last date for filing of nominations is June 30.

Maulana Khalid Rashid, a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said it was God who had asked women to wear a veil and that this was enshrined in the *Quran*. The board is the highest body of Muslims in India on laws governing personal matters.

''Any statement against the veil means an opinion against Allah and the * Quran* which no Muslim will tolerate,'' Rashid told *The Associated Press*.

Addressing a conference in the Udaipur over the weekend, Patil claimed women started using veils in India to save themselves from Mughal invaders in the
16th century, and that it was time to drop the practice, *The Times of India
*reported. Patil, 72, is a member of the Congress party, and the Governor of Rajasthan.

Parliament and state legislatures choose the president, and the ruling coalition has enough votes to get her elected.

A divided opposition is backing the current President A P J Abdul Kalam and Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat for the post. Historians don't agree with Patil. They say that the practice started much before the Mughal rule in the 16th century. Satish Chandra, in his book *Medieval India*, said the practice of women using veils in the presence of outsiders became widespread in the 13th century.

Muslims account for nearly 14 per cent of India's nearly 1.1. billion people. Conservative Muslim women wear headscarves and face-covering veils.

Orthodox Hindu women also cover their faces in the presence of elderly male members of the family, but their religion does not mandate the practice.

Relations between Hindus and Muslims have been hostile since the bloody partition of the subcontinent into predominantly Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan at independence from Britain in 1947.

Hindu religious leaders have not reacted to Patil's call to drop the veil.

Maulana Hasanul Badr, a Muslim cleric, said it was the duty of Muslim women to cover their bodies.

''Why do politicians interfere in our religious matters? It has become a fashion to pass judgment on Islam,'' he said.

''The statement is a clear reflection of Patil's mind-set about Islam and Muslims. It is better that the United Progressive Alliance change its presidential candidate and opt for a more secular person for this post,'' he said.

Maulana Mehmood Madani, general secretary of Ulema-i-Hind, a Muslim organisation, accused Patil of twisting history.

''She must apologise and withdraw her observations,'' *The Times of India*newspaper quoted Madani as saying
